At a rally outside Paramount on Wednesday morning, Harold & Kumar duo Kal Penn and John Cho made a surprise appearance to pump up a massive group of SAG-AFTRA members.
“We were just in the back, here to support and they asked, ‘Do you want to come up?'” said Penn, with Cho adding, “It was like a scene from one of our struck works.”
Penn, who worked as an associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement during the Obama administration, called out the AMPTP’s hiring of a “progressive DC PR firm.” At the end of August, THR reported that the AMPTP hired The Levinson Group, run by Molly Levinson, a former political director at CNN and CBS. “You know the work we are doing with our union and our sister unions is working if they are taking steps like that,” said Penn.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has hired a prominent Washington, D.C.-based crisis management firm to assist its messaging effort as the double actors and writers strike grinds on with no end in sight. The studios’ trade association has been under an unprecedented national spotlight in its four-decade history as the work stoppages lead to severe ripple-effect economic consequences.
The organization as well as the PR company, The Levinson Group, declined to comment. It’s led by namesake Molly Levinson, a former political director at CNN and CBS turned strategic adviser for corporate clients with reputational and risk concerns. She’s also known for her work on behalf of the restaurant Comet Ping Pong, countering “Pizzagate,” as well as the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in its campaign for pay equity.

The U.S. Soccer Federation, the governing body for the sport in this country, offers a bold vision on its website, declaring it believes “in the power of soccer to unify our nation… We are stronger together, and together, we are One Nation. One Team.”
The statement may be laudable, but appears ironic given the lack of unity between the organization and members of the women’s national team, a squad that in recent years has included Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Rose Lavelle, and Captain Becky Sauerbrunn, among other outstanding talents. The Oscar-contending documentary Lfg explores the ongoing legal dispute between the women players and the federation over equal pay and equal working conditions for the women’s and men’s teams.
“For us, this film is about what it means to get inside a journey where people are fighting for equality,” says Andrea Nix Fine, who directed the film with Sean Fine.
