While many of our favorite sci-fi shows seem to either be on hold or suddenly canceled, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind shows no sign of stopping. The alternate history show is blasting off with its fourth season on the streamer this November and, as always, the premiere is the most exciting part of the series’ return for those who are curious to see where all the characters have ended up after the traditional massive time jump.
The season four opening montage sets the stage for a new era, and clears away anything surplus to requirements. Unfortunately, that means that we’ve likely seen the last of Jodi Balfour’s Ellen Wilson for a while, as we’re informed that she and Bush won re-election, but the Democrats then swept to victory four years later with President Al Gore now in charge of the country. Specificity is vital in a short. It anchors a story when there’s limited room to distinguish it, and often it’s the details we remember. Faces, sometimes. Aspects of place. Observations made by Gerry (Lev Gorn) as he sits at a café counter. We already know Gerry, thanks to a brief introductory scene. We know that he’s carrying knives, that he can’t use his car, that he’s trying to reach his father’s place. We have reason to be suspicious about him. Now we watch him watching teenager Anna (Kate Lyn Sheil) as she plays a shooting arcade game. It’s the details that tell us what’s going on. Her delicate, doe-like face. The focus on her bra strap where it emerges from the edge of her t-shirt.
Opportunity seems to be knocking for this ill-intentioned man when Anna’s little brother approaches him to...

"Michael - this is the beginning for you." It's time to get revenge! Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for Payback, a mob vengeance thriller marking the feature directorial debut of NY producer / filmmaker Joseph Mensch. A young stockbroker at a Mob-controlled Wall Street firm gets betrayed and sent to prison for six years. When he gets out, he seeks revenge. Matt Levett stars as Mike Markovich in the film. And the full cast also includes Anna Baryshnikov, Toby Leonard Moore, Lev Gorn, Rade Serbedzija, Elena Satine, Boris Lee Krutonog, and David Vadim. This actually looks way better than it should, even though it is entirely derivative, the footage in here is damn good. I'm intrigued! Have a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Joseph Mensch's Payback, direct from YouTube: Mike Markovich (Matt Levett), a young stockbroker at a Mob-controlled Wall Street firm, is betrayed and imprisoned for six years.

"You're safe now... you're here with me." "You don't know what you're talking about." Array has released an official trailer for the indie drama titled Lingua Franca, the third feature made by filmmaker Isabel Sandoval. This premiered last year at the Venice Film Festival in the Venice Days sidebar, becoming the first film directed by and starring an openly trans woman of color to screen in competition. It also played at the London, Busan, and Stockholm Film Festivals, and stopped by AFI Fest in the fall. The film is a love story between an undocumented, transgender, Filipina caregiver and a Russian-Jewish slaughterhouse worker in Brooklyn. "Sensual and provocative, Lingua Franca is an unflinchingly candid chronicle of a disempowered woman's political and sexual awakening." The film stars Isabel Sandoval, Eamon Farren, Lynn Cohen, Ivory Aquino, and Lev Gorn. This looks ravishing - intimate and authentic, more than a story about love.

This year, there's no need to worry whether The Americans TV show on FX will be cancelled or renewed. Whatever happens with the ratings in season six, the showrunners made a creative decision to end the Cold War spy saga, quite some time ago, and when FX last renewed it, the renewal was for a sixth and final season. So, why track the ratings? Well, it keeps us off the streets, where we might fall prey to Russian spies. Also, it gives us a good benchmark against which to measure other FX TV series. Now, we're just left to wonder whether there will be a sequel or revival of The Americans someday, so stay tuned. An FX espionage drama, the sixth and final season of The Americans stars Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Holly Taylor, Keidrich Sellati, Noah Emmerich, Lev Gorn, Costa Ronin, and Brandon J.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Americans” Season 6, Episode 1, “Dead Hand.”]
“The Americans” kicked off its final season with an aptly tense hour of establishment, table-setting, and genuine conflict. Elizabeth (Keri Russell) is burning the candle at both ends by pulling double duty as a spy — now that her partner is retired — and an instructor to and backup for Paige (Holly Taylor). Philip (Matthew Rhys), meanwhile, is working overtime, too… at the travel agency. And even then he’s finding time for a night of line dancing with his co-workers.
This has been their dynamic for the past three years, but all that’s about to change. It’s 1987, Crowded House is taking the country by storm, and Mikhail Gorbachev aims to thaw the Cold War once and for all. What does it all mean for a married couple divided over which version of Mother Russia they’re loyal to? Well, after the first hour,...

“We’re screwed” – Stan Beeman.
Never has there been a more ominous portent uttered by anyone on any show than this declaritive statement which, rather fittingly comes at the end of a big confession scene in which one man holding a deep personal secret shares said secret with another man he considers a close friend. But the dramatic irony of it all is that, the person in question, Philip, the man acting as confidant is sharing the deepest, darkest secret of all, one that would send Stan Beeman spiraling into violence, something that we’ve seen him capable of doing very, very well.
Stan’s confession of his affair with Nina (which as we see later Philip and Elizabeth knew a whole lot about), comes at a particularly rocky time in his marraige and career. He loses...

Last winter, the world met Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, a "typical" white-bread married couple living in suburban Washington, D.C., circa 1981. Philip (Matthew Rhys) plays racquetball and runs a local travel agency, while fresh-faced Elizabeth (Keri Russell) sports a wardrobe straight out of Blair Warner's closet and spends her free time baking brownies for the new neighbors. Philip and Elizabeth are so good at masking their true identities that even their American-born children have no clue Mom and Dad are really highly trained Kgb agents spying on their adopted homeland.

The first season of The Americans came to a thrilling end in “The Colonel,” a gratifying resolver that still left plenty to ponder for Season 2.
Our favorite Directorate S agents were given two separate orders, Elizabeth (Keri Russell) was to meet the Colonel (Victor Slezak), with intelligence on President Regan’s Star Wars missile defense system, while Phillip (Matthew Rhys) was ordered to retrieve a the latest recording from Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger’s study bug, which audiences learned from last week, was compromised by Agent Gaad’s (Richard Thomas) task force.
Orders came from Claudia (Margo Martindale) in another icy exchange with Elizabeth, sparking suspicion from her and Phillip, that the meeting with the Colonel was most likely, a setup due to its sudden urgency and level of intelligence exchanged. It was finally agreed upon that they carry out the orders as planned–until Phillip changes the plans at the last minute,...

Breathe. Do not forget to breathe.
Your enjoyment of "The Americans" requires you to stay alive long enough to truly appreciate the incredible -- but real -- genius of the show's Season 1 finale. No matter how much anyone studied history or could have guessed about what was coming, "The Colonel" still managed to shock and surprise from beginning to end.
It's going to be a long almost-year to wait before we find out what happens next.
Crises of conscience and related international crises
Philip and Elizabeth Jennings (Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell) have not one but two missions to accomplish before the season ends. The first is an everyday thing: Someone has to go retrieve a recording from Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger's study bug. The other mission is a little more dangerous, as it requires one of them to meet with a Colonel who knows all about the Reagan administration's Star Wars program.

The Americans is one of our favorite new shows of 2012-2013 season. It’s a rich period piece that revolves around Phillip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) Jennings, Russian sleeper spies who have spent 20 years secretly integrating themselves to American society, complete with two children and the picket fence. As the Cold War begins to heat up in the early 1980′s, so too does the spy game in Washington D.C. where the Jennings live.
It’s a multi-layered story of espionage, identity, loyalty, duplicity, patriotism, loneliness, and family, made even more complex when FBI Agent Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) and his family move in across the street from the Jennings, and we see how he approaches those same themes from the other side, while forcing a Russian spy named Nina (Annet Mahendru) to turn on her country and be his mole. It places a critical magnifying glass over...

With the fall of some of the early web content studios like maniaTV, 60Frames and ABC/Disney's Stage 9, there were some web series projects that went down with their ships that we thought might never see the light of day. Trenches, a sci-fi action series from creator Shane Felux was one such project. Our last check in with Felux was in August of 2008, when Stage 9 had released its pricey comedy series Squeegees to mixed results. A few months later ABC shuttered its nascent digital studio, leaving Trenches in distribution purgatory. Now the series has found a new home, with Sony Pictures Television licensing the project from ABC to be released starting February 16, 2010 on Crackle. Set in the future on a a distant war torn planet, the story centers around two groups of opposing soldiers fighting against each other only to realize that the real enemy is something else. The 10-episode series,...
