- When he left Creem Magazine he moved to Austin in 1979 to become music editor of the Austin American-Statesman staying there until 1984.
- In 2016 he published his own narrative study of the music, The History of Rock & Roll, Volume 1. Volume 2 arrived in 2019.
- In 1986, he was the co-author with Ken Tucker and Geoffrey Stokes of Rock of Ages: The Rolling Stone History of Rock & Roll.
- Began his rock & roll journalism career as a writer at Crawdaddy. He followed that by contributing to Rolling Stone before being asked to moved to San Francisco to be the Reviews Editor.
