Conservative media’s coverage of Tuesday’s massacre in Uvalde, Texas, has been filled with gross speculation and calls to transform elementary schools into military-grade compounds patrolled by gun-toting teachers. The response from the Republican politicians was just as sickening.
The GOP has for years been working to stonewall the passage of meaningful gun control legislation, with their obsession with (and misinterpretation of) the Second Amendment only intensifying as mass shootings have become more frequent. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) literally begged his conservative colleagues to take the issue seriously on the floor of Congress.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) slept on the steps of the Capitol Friday night.
The congresswoman—accompanied by fellow Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), and activists—spent the night on the Capitol steps to bring attention to the millions of Americans who face eviction if a moratorium implemented by the CDC in March 2020 is allowed to expire at midnight on Saturday. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, more than 11 million Americans are behind on rent, and many have not received federal rent assistance that was passed by Congress.

Republicans are learning the hard way that supporting a president who inspires a violent attempt to overthrow the government has consequences.
There are the obvious ones, like the fracturing of the foundation of representative democracy, the adrenaline shot to future right-wing extremist terror, and the growing specter of a new civil war. This isn’t what Republican members of the House of Representatives are concerned about, though. Instead, they’re whining that they’re being asked to pass through metal detectors as they enter the Capitol.
Louie Gohmert just walked around the magnetometer.

Jake Tapper, the Washington-based correspondent for CNN, will likely get a new spotlight at the network after it said it would expand his weekday program to two hours and make him the lead anchor for all Washington events. The move is part of a broader shakeup of the cable-news outlet’s Washington coverage, which has taken over more of its schedule in the last few months of the Trump administration.
As part of the changes, Abby Phillip will take over as anchor of the weekend broadcast of “Inside Politics,” while Dana Bash will co-anchor the Sunday talk program “State of the Union” with Tapper. Tapper and Bash will each anchor two Sundays a month, beginning January 24th.

Daniella Diaz spent months as Elizabeth Warren’s shadow.
The CNN producer crisscrossed the country, following the presidential hopeful as she pressed the flesh in a middle school gymnasium in Muscatine, Iowa, or delivered a blistering rebuke of Donald Trump in a packed auditorium in Lebanon, N.H. Anywhere the candidate looked, while working a rope line, taking a debate stage, or posing for selfies with supporters, she’d be likely to find Diaz and her camera gazing back at her.
It’s a heady, grueling experience to be a campaign embed like Diaz. But it was one that took an unusual turn when the cameras were turned on Diaz herself.
“I never thought that I would be the story,” says Diaz. “My goal has always been to shed light on other people’s stories, but I just kept doing my job and focusing on accomplishing what I needed to accomplish in any given day.
