According to The Hollywood Reporter Korean production/distribution giant Mirovision will adapt Empire of the Ants, the best-selling sci-fi novel by French author Bernard Werber, for the big screen. Mirovision, headed by Jason Chae, is showing the first promo trailers for the $25 million, 3D animated feature, to buyers in Cannes.
Korean director Kim Moon-saeng, who shot animated fantasy film Wonderful Days (2003), is on board to helm the English-language production and will produce with his Anima House shingle and production partner Kay Hwang. Young Gi Lee of Korea's Wonderworld Studios will also produce.

TORONTO -- The Montreal World Film Festival on Monday said its 30th edition will open with Our Earthmen Friends, the feature film directorial debut of award-winning French science-fiction author Bernard Werber. Werber's film, which will receive its world premiere Aug. 24 out of competition, portrays earthbound humans from the perspective of space aliens. Werber, best known for his Ants trilogy and the recent novel The Breath of the Gods, directed Our Earthmen Friends for French producer Les Films 13.

MONTREAL -- Having survived a rival film festival and the loss of key government funding, the Montreal World Film Festival (MWFF) launched Thursday night to a chorus of disapproval for Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper. A no-frills MWFF opened with a gala screening of Nos amis les terriens, (Our Earthmen Friends), a first feature for French sci-fi writer Bernard Werber. But festival founder and president Serge Losique struggled to get his 30th edition off the ground after Telefilm Canada, the federal government's film financier, and SODEC, its Quebec counterpart, pulled key funding for MWFF for the second year running.
