Updated: In one of ABC Family‘s first major greenlight/renewal decisions under new president Tom Ascheim, the network has picked up three drama pilots: Alice In Arabia, about an American teen girl kidnapped by her extended royal Saudi Arabian family and forced to live with them; Recovery Road, based on Blake Nelson’s novel about a teen girl dealing with additiction; and Unstrung, about a brother-sister duo of tennis players. Additionally, the network has ordered a fourth season of comedy Baby Daddy. ABC Family also announced today a fourth season renewal of fellow comedy Melissa & Joey though that 20-episode pickup was originally unveiled in May. ABC Family‘s new president is Tom Ascheim. Ascheim, who has served as Evp and General Manager of Nickelodeon Television and CEO of Newsweek, will start immediately. He succeeds Michael Riley, who announced his departure in September to relocate to the UK. The hire of Ascheim comes after an exhaustive search led by Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group, that included vetting a number of internal Disney candidates (Riley also came from within the company) as well as outside ones. Those considered included Riley’s No. 2, Evp Original Programming and Development and Chief Creative Officer Kate Juergens, though, like she did when Riley’s predecessor Paul Lee left, she is expected to remain focused on the network’s programming as Sweeney reportedly searched for an executive with a strong business background. Ascheim certainly is a surprising choice. He wasn’t on people’s radar...

Update 1 Pm: The search for Michael Riley‘s replacement is still in the nascent stages, but his No. 2, Evp Original Programming and Development and Chief Creative Officer Kate Juergens, is being talked about as a logical choice. The main question is whether, following her recent promotion to a Chief Creative Officer, Juergens would want the top job. The situation is reminiscent of that at sibling Disney Channel, where the top creative executive, Gary Marsh, did not go for the president job when Rich Ross left to run Disney Studios. After the job became vacant again two years later when Carolina Lightcap left, Marsh took over. Juergens similarly had been ABC Family’s top development executive but did not make a play for the president position when Paul Lee left in 2010. Will she do it now? Previous 12:05 Pm: Michael Riley is leaving ABC Family after a three-year stint as president.

While some of us are still mourning the loss of "Bunheads," ABC Family has been busy with three new comedy pilots and Tori Spelling.
On Friday, the network announced that Spelling will star in "Mystery Girls," a comedy that follows a former starlet (Spelling) who turns her attention to a life of crime-solving with her former TV co-star after a witness to a crime refuses to talk to anyone but the infamous "Mystery Girls."
Additionally, the network has greenlit "Work Mom," a workplace comedy centering on Heather, a young woman working at marketing firm who gets roped into hiring her mother, and the food-centric "Young & Hungry," which will be executive produced by Eric Tannenbaum and Kim Tannenbaum of "Two and a Half Men," along with Ashley Tisdale and Jessica Rhoades. The plot centers around Nick, a well-off young tech entrepreneur, who hires Gabi, a feisty young food blogger, to be his personal chef.

Burbank, Calif. — "The Fosters" is a study in unlikely bedfellows.
The new ABC Family drama pairs mainstream star Jennifer Lopez and Peter Paige, who played bubbly Emmett in the cult favorite series "Queer as Folk," as executive producers. It brings to television a rare depiction of a lesbian couple as heads of a household.
And "The Fosters," airing its second episode 9 p.m. Edt Monday, combines a focus on the generally ignored lives of foster children with the challenges of an ethnically diverse home – a big reach for an hourlong series aimed at teenagers and young adults.
"I think in every time we have to kind of push that envelope and really be a reflection of what's going on in society and ... this show does that and in a smart, edgy, funny, heartfelt way," said Lopez, who's producing it with co-creators Paige and Bradley Bredeweg.

This summer ABC Family will have eight original series on air, the most ever in the network’s history, including the launch of four new shows, dramas The Fosters and Twisted and reality series Dancing Fools and The Vineyard.

You know I’m a fan of ABC Family, and there’s no denying the popularity of Pretty Little Liars. Well, now there’s more to explore in the Pll world, as a spin-off is coming your way in October. Ravenswood will be stepping out into the light in October, and Pretty Little Liars will get a fifth season.
I find this one pretty interesting actually, because this could go several directions, and because the social media phenomenon that is Pll is of interest all by itself. Will this one take off and become its own social media craze? I want to know actually.
While Pretty Little Liars is a decent show (you know, given the appropriate caveats about age and so on), the explosion of popularity, and even the massive integration, when it comes to social media is the sort of thing that all shows on all networks should be studying.

Related: ABC Family To Order Drama Pilot ‘Terminales’, Two Comedy Pilots ABC Family has made its pilot orders, greenlighting drama Terminales and comedies Phys Ed and Continuing Fred. The three pilots will go into production this fall along with the previously announced drama pilots The Fosters (working title), executive produced by Jennifer Lopez, and Socio. “These pilots will further our strength in both the drama and comedy areas,” said ABC Family Evp Kate Juergens, noting that the network is looking to extend its streak of launching a top-rated new series in the young demos every summer, something it has done in the past three years with Pretty Little Liars (2010), Switched at Birth (2011) and Baby Daddy (2012). Here are the new pilots’ official descriptions: Terminales is a one-hour drama based on a successful Mexican television format by Miguel Angel Fox and follows a young woman’s life after she is diagnosed with a terminal illness.

She's the toast of Broadway with two Tony Awards to her credit, but Sutton Foster isn't yet a household name to the rest of America. If there's any justice, that's about to change, however, as she makes her TV series debut in "Bunheads," a delightful new dramedy premiering Monday, June 11, on ABC Family.
Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the gifted writer-executive producer behind "Gilmore Girls," the new series stars Foster as Michelle Simms, a classically trained dancer who has spent the past few years in Las Vegas, where her chorus work has caught the appreciative eye of Hubbell Flowers (Alan Ruck, "Spin City"), a shy but affluent Californian who showers Michelle with gifts and dinners anytime he's in town.
As the series opens, a depressed Michelle has hit a career slump in her mid-30s, unable to land legitimate dance work but bored and unfulfilled by her Vegas gig. After a...

You may be pirouetting with excitement over ABC Family’s Bunheads (premiering Monday at 9/8c) because it promises all the balletic grace of Black Swan but with small-town charm in place of big-city psychosis. Or you could be tutu psyched because it stars Tony winner Sutton Foster as a fish-out-of-water Vegas showgirl. But the likeliest reason you’ll be making it a “pointe” to watch is that the series is the latest from the Wonder Woman behind Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino. Heck, even just in this TVLine Q&A, she manages to dish out reminder after reminder of why her work is so adored,...

At ABC Family’s upfront in New York today, the main topic of conversation was the reveal of “A” on tonight’s Pretty Little Liars’ season finale. Even Secret Life of the American Teenager creator Brenda Hampton asked Pll Ep Marlene King for a clue during their showrunners panel, but King would only say that the show, which was Twitter’s No. 1 TV Hot Topic in 2011, may bring the site down this evening after it reveals a new mystery by the end of the hour.

Three episodes into its premiere run, "Pretty Little Liars" has earned itself a 12-episode extension, bringing its total first-season order to 22 hours.
ABC Family had positioned "Liars" as the centerpiece of its spring upfront presentations, and the cable network's confidence in the series appears to have paid off. "Liars" also has built on its already significant demos, averaging 1.33 million viewers 18-49 on June 22, topping its debut delivery by 20%.
