Resurrection.I have now loved Suicide, the 1977 self-titled album by the brilliant, sleazy, frightening New York punk band, for longer than I haven’t, having discovered it somewhere around the age of fifteen. Still, I did not realize until last year that I had completely misinterpreted one of the lyrics of its sole single, “Cheree,” a tinkling S&m-tinged ballad. Until then, I had heard the couplet “I love you/Come play with me” as “I love you/Comply with me,” and in doing so had found the song no less romantic. Which was better, as a lyric about love? I had to confess to being disappointed with the truth, even as I recognized that “comply with me,” even in a song about a “black leather lady,” might be just a shade too dark. What is devotion, after all, but a willingness to bend to someone else’s desires, someone else’s will?...

With the 2022 thriller "Resurrection," director Andrew Semans crafted an elegant and disturbing portrait of psychological abuse by thrusting viewers directly into the headspace of the lead character. To watch the movie is to feel the tightly enclosed traps closing in on its protagonist, and by extension, the viewer. For a horror-adjacent movie with a title like "Resurrection," you might think it's about something coming back from the dead. And in a way, it is -- a ghost from the past, back to haunt the coldly professional Margaret.
But biologist David (Tim Roth) is very much alive, very real, and very threatening. And Margaret's daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) is almost 18, the same age Margaret was when the 20-years-older David charmed her and her parents, got her to move into his home, and quickly began destroying her sense of self. Now he is back in her life, orbiting her and pushing her...

A subtle pattern emerged when reflecting upon the year’s standout horror moments and performances: it’s been one hell of a year for knockout monologues. A monologue relays vital information about the story or the character relaying it and supports its central themes, but there’s an art form to its delivery. Some of the most unforgettable performances of 2022 belonged to actors that delivered uncanny, showstopping monologues that glued us to our seats and left us in rapturous awe.
Writer/Director Andrew Semans’s Resurrection explored the psychological toll of abuse via dread-soaked horror. Rebecca Hall stars as Margaret, a savvy career woman with a sturdy head on her shoulders. She’s single-handedly raised an independent teen, Abbie (Grace Kaufman), on the cusp of leaving the nest for college. But Margaret’s carefully assembled life begins to untangle from her grasp when David (Tim Roth), a menacing man from her distant past,...

Canadian author, director, festival programmer, and publisher Kier-La Janisse is a true renaissance woman when it comes to film, having sculpted a unique career focusing on cult, horror, and exploitation cinema. Through her small press, Spectacular Optical, she has published books on French fantastique director Jean Rollin, the satanic panic craze, Christmas horror, and bizarre children’s films, among other fantastically niche topics. In recent years her directorial debut, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021), won Best Documentary at several festivals, inspired folk horror film screenings in theaters and on Shudder, and was released as part of a massive, fifteen-disc box set through Severin Films. And now, ten years after its initial publication, Fab Press is releasing a new edition of her essential tome, House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films. Poland’s American Film Festival readies for its — lucky — 13th edition, unspooling Nov. 8-13 in Wrocław.
The fest, which will open with “Bones and All” and close with Florian Zeller’s “The Son,” will once again combine classics with contemporary titles, for instance pairing Nancy Buirski’s doc “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” with John Schlesinger’s Oscar-winner, or introducing retrospectives dedicated to Robert Altman and Nina Menkes.
Menkes — behind “Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power” — will also get Aff’s Indie Star Award. Previous recipients include Todd Solondz, David Gordon Green, Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman, Rosanna Arquette and John Waters, who came to Poland last year.
“It was amazing,” Waters tells Variety, and he was “pleasantly surprised and flattered” by the local audience’s knowledge of his work.

Above: US Teaser poster for Crimes of the Future. Design by Bangers & Mash.In the middle of the Venice Film Festival, and in the lead-up to the Toronto and New York fests, still the most “liked” poster of the last six months of my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram was a teaser poster that appeared in the run-up to Cannes in the spring. The poster was for was one of the most anticipated films of Cannes, a film that has since been disseminated to the world with a much tamer big-head poster and even tamer home video art. The Crimes of the Future teaser racked up nearly 2,000 likes and not far behind it was a gorgeous art print for Cronenberg’s 30-year-old Naked Lunch by the very talented (and seemingly Cronenberg-obsessed) Nick Charge that I posted a few months later. Tim Roth was on his way to the Cannes Film Festival a couple of years ago when a script came through from his agent. It was for a movie called Resurrection.
“I had taken my boy with me, my youngest,” Roth tells Den of Geek. “And I sat down and I read it, and I was kind of shellshocked afterwards. So my son was like, ‘What is that?’ And I said, ‘Well, I don’t know how you would describe it. It’s a psychological horror movie, but it’s a new thing to me.’ So he said, ‘Give it to me.’ He read it and he went, ‘Okay, you’re doing it.’”
In Resurrection, written and directed by Andrew Semans, Rebecca Hall plays Margaret, a successful career woman and single mother who is getting ready to send her daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) to college.

As of this writing, filmmaker Andrew Semans, the writer/director of IFC Films’ harrowing new movie “Resurrection,” is the proud father of a new baby. But when I spoke to him about a week ago, and when, more importantly, he wrote “Resurrection”— a scorching new psychological horror/thriller—he definitely didn’t have kids. His wife was due to give birth, and he was getting in as many interviews as he could before his baby arrived.

Exclusive: IFC Films has acquired North American rights to the comedy Bar Fight!, starring Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Luka Jones (Shrill) and Julian Gant (Call Me Kat), with plans for a day-and-date release on November 11.
The synopsis for the film written and directed by Klaus scribe Jim Mahoney is as follows: There’s only one way to settle the score after a break-up and for Nina (Fumero) and Allen (Jones) it’s a turf war for their favorite local bar. Lines have been drawn and with the help of Nina’s best friend Chelsea (Bloom), it’s going to be a winner-takes-all affair. The drinks are free flowing, the competition is fierce, and games are out-of-this-world crazy. With the bar on the line, this Bar Fight! is going to become a battle for the ages.
Bar Fight! was produced by Sarah Gabriel and Marc Goldberg of Signature Films, and James Harris and Mark Lane of Tea Shop Productions. Executive producers included Tomás Yankelevich, Peter Bevan and Mariana Sanjurjo from Particular Crowd, and Simon Williams and Jamie Jessop from Ingenious Media. Signature Entertainment is handling international sales.
“I’m so thrilled IFC is distributing our crazy lil’ movie!” said Mahoney. “A huge thank you to Signature Films and Particular Crowd for their endless support, my invaluable crew for their skill and tenacity, and an absolute dream of a cast for truly bringing Bar Fight to life. I can’t wait for the world to see the madness we’ve created.”
Established in 2000 and based in New York City, IFC Films is a leading U.S. distributor of independent film. Other current and upcoming releases include Andrew Seman’s Resurrection, Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, Official Competition from Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, Claire Denis’ Both Sides of the Blade, Andrea Arnold’s first documentary Cow, Jacques Audiard’s Paris, 13th District, and the Venice Golden Lion winner Happening, directed by Audrey Diwan.
Adam Koehler negotiated the deal for Bar Fight! on behalf of IFC Films, with Andrew Nerger of Signature Entertainment on behalf of the production.

This August is a big month for returning favorites, both on television and in theaters. The month brings new seasons of favorites from last year, including Reservation Dogs and Industry. At IMAX theaters, nostalgic moviegoers can get a chance to catch E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial Again. Even this month’s biggest debut, a Game of Thrones prequel, is kind of a return.
But, even apart from the dragons and bloodshed promised by a return to Westeros, there’s a lot to look forward to this month. Here are a...

"Resurrection" is a startling vision. Writer/director Andrew Semans often uses the mundane to create suspense and unease, giving the audience the sense that a monster is always waiting around the corner. In the horror film, the monster (played by Tim Roth) returns from Margaret's (Rebecca Hall) past with a singular goal in mind. Without spoiling it quite yet, let's just say the movie concludes with an ending no one will see coming at the start.
It's an ambitious conclusion. At one point during a recent interview, Semans told us he even "chickened out" and wrote a more conventional finale out of fear it was too much,...

Before composer Jim Williams’ had ever heard of “Resurrection,” his music was a key component of writer-director Andrew Semans’ daring and affecting new thriller. “We temped a lot of the movie with Jim Williams before Jim Williams even came on,” Semans told IndieWire. “‘We were like, ‘Well, he’s all over the movie already, maybe we can get him.’” “Resurrection,” a film that is simultaneously a heartbreaking character study, a disturbing body horror film, and at times a pitch-black comedy, was exactly the kind of project that tends to attract Williams. Given credits on his resume like “A Field in England,” “Possessor,” and Julia Ducourneau’s “Raw” and “Titane,” the composer is clearly interested in the unusual and the challenging.
“I’m drawn to the opportunity to try something out of the ordinary,” Williams told IndieWire. “Julia Ducourneau and Andrew Semans give me a lot of scope to be creative.

Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, the visceral and supremely audacious psycho-drama, “Resurrection” starring Rebecca Hall, has been described as “unhinged,” “bat-shit crazy,” “totally out there,” and worse. Of course, these are all compliments for a searing psychological dramatic thriller that’s horrifying, and, yes, tips into the horror genre a little bit, but also remains unpredictable in its madness. Starring an outstanding Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth in two of the best performances of the year, “Resurrection” is directed by Andrew Semans, and is a bruising look at abusive relationships, sadism, gaslighting, control and lack thereof, the primal fears of parenthood and so much more.

Rebecca Hall follows her terrific turn in The Night House with yet another stunning horror performance in Resurrection, a twisted psychological thriller from writer-director Andrew Semans. By turns chilling and disturbing, it’s a gripping study of trauma and madness.
Hall plays Margaret, a successful businesswoman in upstate New York, whose teenage daughter Abbie (Grace Kaufman) is on the verge of leaving for college. Margaret’s life is rigidly controlled and ordered, until she spots David (Tim Roth) at a conference and has a panic attack that sends her spiralling into terror. "I'm doing what I have to do to protect myself, and my daughter, from harm!" IFC Films has revealed an official trailer for Resurrection, a mysterious, compelling indie thriller from up-and-coming filmmaker Andrew Semans, his second feature so far. This premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival in January and everyone went crazy for it - the film made our Top 10 of the Fest earlier this year. A woman's carefully constructed life is upended when an unwelcome shadow from her past returns, forcing her to confront the monster she's evaded for two decades. Who is he? What is she hiding in her past? What is really going on between them? There's only one way to find out - you have to see it and decipher it yourself. Rebecca Hall stars as Rebecca, along with Tim Roth, Grace Kaufman, Michael Esper & Angela Wong Carbone. I raved about this one in my Sundance review,...

Rebecca Hall anchored one of the best horror films of last year, "The Night House," and this summer, she's making her return to dark territory with the psychological thriller "Resurrection." Written and directed by Andrew Semans, "Resurrection" made its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival back in January. Our review called it "a frightening film you won't easily forget."
In "Resurrection," Hall stars as Margaret, a single mother and career-oriented woman whose life with her daughter Abbie, played by Grace Kaufman, is upset by the emergence of a menacing figure from her past. Tim Roth costars as David, a man with whom Margaret had an abusive relationship, who...

This year’s Sundance Film Festival was heavy on genre fare, with plenty of horror flicks and thrillers dominating the lineup and winning some of its biggest awards. A common theme was bold filmmakers elevating once-pulpy genres into high art, and Andrew Semans is no exception. His latest film, “Resurrection,” earned strong reviews for taking a premise that has been explored in countless generic thrillers and turning it into something truly unique.
“Resurrection” tells the story of a woman (played by Rebecca Hall) who finds her normal existence disrupted when a man from her past suddenly reemerges in her life. As the dark details of their past relationship begin to emerge, her life starts to unravel in ways she never could have expected.
While that description could apply to any number of basic cable thrillers, the film won critics over by gradually devolving into something much more unhinged that needs...

This past weekend, writer/director Andrew Semans celebrated the world premiere of his sophomore feature film, Resurrection, during the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Starring Rebecca Hall, Resurrection follows a successful woman named Margaret who seemingly has a handle on all aspects of her life, but when a figure from her past (played by Tim Roth) suddenly appears out of nowhere, both Margaret’s life and sanity quickly unravel as she contends with the hold he still has over her after all these years.
Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Semans about Resurrection, and during our conversation, the writer/director chatted about the inspiration behind his wildly provocative story, collaborating with both Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth, and more.

Rebecca Hall is one of the best actresses working right now. No matter what the material, Hall appears to throw herself into the role, building a unique, believable character every single time. Blockbusters, indie titles — it doesn't matter. She always delivers. Hall also has a knack for playing solitary women coming completely unmoored — something she did so well in films like "Christine" and "The Night House," and something she does again with "Resurrection," a disturbing little thriller from writer-director Andrew Semans. Just because Hall is playing yet another woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown doesn't mean she's repeating herself, though. No, Hall is...
