Last November, Nintendo officially announced that a live-action movie based on The Legend of Zelda was in development and that Wes Ball would direct. Ball’s credits include The Maze Runner film trilogy and the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Now, Ball has given fans a little more information about what they may expect from the Zelda movie. “I have this awesome idea,” Ball told Total Film. “I’ve been thinking about it for a long freakin’ time of how cool a Zelda movie would be…”
The filmmaker added, “I want to [fulfill] people’s greatest desires. I know it’s important, this [Zelda] franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape.”
Ball said the driving force behind the Zelda movie is his desire to “live in that world. That’s the thing I want...

In the world of movies and TV shows, there are countless adaptations that have been made from popular novels and biographical works. But these forms of entertainment have also been inspired by and adapted from some of the biggest video games, which don't get nearly as much attention as they should. In 2023, HBO's acclaimed series "The Last of Us," based on the Sony action-adventure game franchise of the same name, broke viewership records and became the most-watched show in the history of the streaming platform in Europe and Latin America, per the Associated Press.
Along with television series, video-game-to-movie adaptations have also grown in popularity among audiences, with the star-studded "The Super Mario Bros." movie, adapted from the beloved game franchise by Nintendo, being the second-highest grossing film of 2023 so far, as reported by Insider. ‘Deadpool 3’ stands out as one of the most eagerly anticipated MCU movies, but it seems like a significant chunk of the film’s plot has already been exposed through leaks and rumors, a common occurrence in the realm of social media. Recent speculations suggest that Deadpool and Wolverine will be teaming up to take on some of the former X-Men villains from Fox’s ‘X-Men’ franchise. Following closely on the heels of this, another rumor surfaced indicating that Toad, a mutant with frog-like qualities and a relatively minor role in two separate movies, might be one of the adversaries.
Adding to the intrigue, Shawn Levy, the director of ‘Deadpool 3,’ has chosen to remain tight-lipped regarding Taylor Swift’s potential appearance in the movie as Dazzler.

‘Deadpool 3’ is one of the most anticipated MCU movies, and it seems like half of the movie was spoiled already through different leaks and rumors that are commonplace on social media. Recently, it’s been rumored that Deadpool and Wolverine would be fighting against some of the former X-Men villains who made appearances in Fox’s ‘X-Men’ franchise. Then, a few days after that, a rumor appeared that one of such villains would be Toad, a mutant with frog-like qualities who appeared in two separate movies but mostly held a minor role.
Recently, Shawn Levy, director of ‘Deadpool 3’ refused to comment on whether or not Taylor Swift will appear in the movie as Dazzler.
Though there’s no official word on Taylor Swift joining the cast of ‘Deadpool 3,’ the rumor mill has been buzzing since 2022. Reynolds expressed his enthusiasm in an interview, saying,

For 40 years, intrepid plumber Mario and his brother Luigi have captivated gamers of all ages, taking them on whirlwind adventures in which they teleport through pipes, stomp evil mushrooms and rescue princesses. Why do they do this? Dozens of games, several television shows and a truly terrible 1993 movie have failed to give an answer … the plumbers just warp from our reality to the next, shooting fireballs and competing in go-kart races without any deeper mythology.
There’s no real answer provided in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie, either, so don’t get your hopes up. Mario and Luigi are swooped from Brooklyn to a mystical world for reasons never really explained and embark on a quest that makes little sense but accurately captures the games’ color, energy and humor. As cinema, it’s a mess. As simulation, it works.

Before "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" hit theaters this April, the new film caused controversy online because of the voice of its main character. Chris Pratt voices Mario, the iconic plumber-turned-hero, but while fans are used to the character having an Italian accent in the video game, Pratt didn't use one for the movie. Many fans wondered why Charles Martinet, the professional voice actor who gives life to Mario and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day in the film) in the video games, wasn't tapped to voice them on screen as well.
Here's what Pratt's said about his accent in the film, and the one way the movie pokes fun at the accent drama with Martinet's help.

Nintendo brought Mario to the big screen back in 1993 with Super Mario Bros. This film starred Bob Hoskins as the titular Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi. The film did not do too well. It became the go-to reference for a bad adaptation of video games to live-action films.
Fans hoped for a new adaptation for decades, but Nintendo was hesitant to pull the trigger. They finally teamed up with the animation studio Illumination Entertainment who brought us such films as Despicable Me, Minions, and the latest version of The Grinch. The company packed this new film full of Super Mario Easter Eggs and references. What did you end up missing?

Across the history of cinematic screw-ups, few have been as notorious or lasting as 1993’s Super Mario Bros. The film – a loose adaptation of Nintendo’s hit platforming franchise, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo – came to epitomise the “curse” of sub-par game-to-screen adaptations for decades. Hollywood simply didn’t understand video games. Hoskins was oblivious to the film’s origins until he’d already signed on, and who could blame him? Even if he had played the games, the murky, off-putting crime fantasy was unrecognisable from the eye-poppingly colourful frivolity that inspired it. Thirty years later and the Mario games have been adapted again. But this time The Super Mario Brothers Movie suffers from the opposite problem: it understands video games far, far too well.

Los Angeles, April 10 (Ians) Actor Jack Black has some ideas for ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ sequel and he is suggesting Pedro Pascal get cast as Wario.
Black voices Bowser in the animated movie and although he is not sure if his character would return for a potential follow-up film, he would want ‘The Mandalorian’ star to voice Mario’s arch-rival, reports ‘Deadline’.
“It’s not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few ‘Kung Fu Panda’ movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing,” Black told Game Spot.
“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

While streamers typically get by on thrifty marketing budgets, pushing content largely on their menus, most motion picture studios, like Universal, still have all the superpowers in the world to blast a movie out of a canon.
But here’s something to keep in mind as we detail Universal’s promo playbook below in propelling Illumination/Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros Movie to several opening records.: IP and marketing machine alone don’t propel a movie to great box office heights.
‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’
The movie also needs to be great. As subjective and simple-minded as that sounds, when it comes to the feature take of the ever-popular video game Super Mario Bros, it meant staying faithful to the source material itself: The game. And that’s exactly what Illumination and filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic did in this second big screen go-round of the Nintendo game.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day were asked to change their original voices for The Super Mario Bros Movie because they were “a little New Jersey”.
The pair voice Mario and Luigi in the new film, an animated adaptation of the hit Nintendo game.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the pair opened up about earlier versions of the character they tested before settling on their chosen voices.
“We tried different things, different voices,” Day explained. “Every now and then they would say, ‘Charlie, maybe a little less Goodfellas in this one’ – I’m like, ‘Alright! I think you’re wrong, but fine’ – until they landed on something they liked.”
“For a minute, I walked in and they were like, ‘That’s a little New Jersey. You’re doing a Tony Soprano thing,’” Pratt added.
Meanwhile, their co-star Keegan-Michael Key spoke this week about his method for achieving the high-pitched shriek of a voice needed to play Toad.

This article contains mild spoilers for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."
Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" contains multiple, perhaps-obvious, pop music cues that accent the film's many action sequences. Early in the film, when Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) have to traverse a dangerous Brooklyn street on the way to a much-needed plumbing job, The Beastie Boys' 1987 hit "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," from their album "Licensed to Ill" plays on the soundtrack. The line "Our manager's crazy, he always smokes dust" is tactfully omitted. Later in the film, when Mario, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) have to build and drive their own high-octane go-karts, the opening rock strains of AC/DC's 1990 song "Thunderstruck," punctuates the construction.
Both of these music cues have some thematic logic. The more baffling needle drop is the placement of A-ha's 1985 chart-topper "Take on Me,...

The Super Mario Bros Movie is now playing in theaters, and it’s looking to make some serious cash at the box office. Previous projections suggested that the animated movie would bring in somewhere between $85-90 million over a 5-day period, but those projections have since risen considerably.
The Super Mario Bros Movie is now on track to bring in a $195 million five-day opening at the box office, which would mark a record for Illumination. The previous five-day record for the studio was Despicable Me 2‘s $143 million in 2013. The Super Mario Bros Movie is now on track to bring in a $195 million five-day opening at the box office, which would mark a record for Illumination. This article contains minor spoilers for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie."For decades, I've played Nintendo games. They weren't the only ones I enjoyed, of course. I've spent more hours than I like to calculate on darker games like "Ghosts of Tsushima," "Assassin's Creed: Odyssey" and "Valhalla." They're a blast, and they let me indulge in my history geek side. However, these aren't games I play to forget the world for a bit. They're very much rooted in the world, full of complex emotions and situations, moral questions about the decisions you make, and full of a lot of dismembering and brutal death.
When I play a Nintendo game, specifically one set around Mario, Donkey Kong, or any of the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom, I'm not playing it to go deep into a world gone by or murder a whole lot of enemy fighters. I'm playing it to relax.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is proving itself to be a crossover hit between Nintendo fans young and old alike. This is yet another modernized feather in the cap for video games-turned-movies. With fun blockbusters like "Mortal Kombat," the "Sonic the Hedgehog" franchise films, and even a new "Street Fighter" movie in the works, the big screen is prepping itself to be quite the playground for nostalgic gamers.
The main cast includes the most familiar of the bunch: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. That said, this flick is also filled to the brim with fun references, deep cuts, and interesting character cameos. While some of these appearances are of the blink-and-you'll-miss-it variety, other appearances of these minor icons do play more involved roles. With so many cameos from so many corners of the Mario canon, one must wonder, which distinctive additions are the coolest?...

Composer Brian Tyler jumped at the chance to write the music for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” He rattles off the games, Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Kart and Donkey Kong… there are many more, and he’s played them all.
“I knew this music,” Tyler shares. “It was a part of my childhood in the same way that I grew up listening to film scores.”
Tyler has already worked across a wide swath of genres, from horror (“Scream 6”), romantic comedy (“Crazy Rich Asians”), Western (“Yellowstone”) and action (“Fast X”). But this was special assignment, Tyler tells Variety: “I had gaming magazines and I remember articles about Nintendo’s video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto.”
The composer knew he had to deliver fan service to the legion of gamers who understand the original music inside-out. Says Tyler, “I want to incorporate the music that I heard in that 8-bit form...

The Super Mario franchise is a cornerstone of the video game industry. Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach…we know these names better than we know the names of our own parents (whoever they may claim to be). Yet, for as much as we know about the Super Mario franchise, there is so much we don’t know about it. Much of the series is still shrouded in mystery.
So if you’ve ever wondered what’s in the darkest corners of the Super Mario franchise, here are some of the most notable Super Mario urban legends and unsolved mysteries.
15. The True Origins of Donkey Kong’s Name
The Donkey Kong arcade game may have given Mario his big break, but Donkey Kong has obviously gone on to become a household name himself. That’s what makes it so strange that the true origins of Donkey Kong’s name remain something of a mystery.

After the box-office disaster that was 1993's ambitious and perhaps misunderstood "Super Mario Bros.", Nintendo has been especially protective over the brand integrity of the "Super Mario" franchise. Three decades later, the video game adaptation has become a bankable genre, especially with the success of Paramount's "Sonic the Hedgehog" live-action movies as well as this year's "The Last of Us" TV series on HBO. Now, it's Nintendo's time to shine again, so it has teamed up with Universal Pictures and animation house Illumination (known for the "Despicable Me" franchise) to bring Mario back to the big-screen in a way that is Shigeru Miyamoto-approved.
For better or worse, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is extremely dedicated to faithfully recreating every minutiae of the video games, resulting in what feels like a safe but entertaining theme park ride. As an origin story for the franchise, the plot is ultimately as...

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” takes the beloved Nintendo game characters and brings them to the silver screen with big hoorahs and many nods to the games themselves. A massive Hollywood cast and the production house of the “Despicable Me” movies bring to us a cheerful and light animated film that is rather short but absolutely enjoyable. With its adorable characters, two post-credit scenes, and massive fanbase of the game, there are definitely chances of a follow-up film in the near future.

Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voice moustachioed plumbers Mario and Luigi in this animated adaptation of one of the most popular video games of all time. Last month, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel went to the theater to see “Super Mario Bros.,” a movie they directed 30 years ago — and haven’t watched since.
The live-action 1993 film, starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, bombed at the box office and landed on various “Worst Movies of All Time” lists, later developing a passionate cult following. In the directors’ own words, “Super Mario Bros.” was so “reviled” that it left a “black mark” on the married couple’s careers.
That is, until a midnight screening held at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema on March 11 “washed away the stain.”
“My thought was that there would be 10 or 20 people there,” Morton tells Variety. “But it was jam-packed. There were people queueing up around the block for extra tickets.” During the film, Morton says the audience was “laughing and clapping at all the right places. They weren...

In Aaron Horvath's and Michael Jelenic's new animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," the title brothers (Chris Pratt and Charlie Day) find themselves whisked away from modern-day Brooklyn into a fantasy world called the Mushroom Kingdom. Said Kingdom is overseen by the benevolent-yet-heroic Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), an interdimensional monarch who cares deeply for the many innocent, mushroom-shaped citizens who live in her charge. She is capable at parkour, a skilled motorcyclist, and an experienced diplomat; over the course of the film, she treks to a neighboring kingdom to request military aid. She has no parents present, so it's a little baffling as to why she is called a princess and not a queen.
In most of the original Super Mario Bros. video games, the Princess was merely a damsel in distress. An evil, fire-breathing dragon named Bowser would kidnap her and keep her in a terrifying distant castle surrounded by lava.

The box office haul for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is projected to be $127.5 million over its five-day opening, throwing a blue shell at previous estimates, which put it between $85-$90 million. Breaking it down, Wednesday–its official opening day–was looking at $26 million alone, while the three-day total is shaping up to be just over $86 million.
These box office numbers would make The Super Mario Bros. Movie the second-best five-day opening for Illumination, following 2013’s Despicable Me 2. While Pixar and Disney are still the kings of box office when it comes to animated features, Illumination has been making its presence known for over a decade now, with the Despicable Me franchise actually being one of the highest-grossing animated franchises ever. Through its five entries, it has raked in nearly $1.6 billion, topping even Toy Story (albeit with only four entries). Ahead of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Illumination has...

As someone who has never played a Mario game (only ever held a Nintendo for half a second), I felt a little bit out of place in a room packed with fans dressed in their merchandise—t-shirts and snapbacks with their two favorite brothers on them—but as the movie began, I found myself enjoying their little hoots, even if I didn’t entirely understand the references. For noobs such as myself, “The Super Mario Bros.” tells the story of Mario and Luigi of Brooklyn, who accidentally fall into another world where there are mushroom kingdoms and evil turtles. A princess is on a mission to defeat an evil turtle, and Mario will help her so that he can be reunited with his beloved brother. To begin with, we need to address the impeccable animation and sound design of “The Super Mario Bros.” As we hear in the movie as well,...

Fans of The Super Mario Bros Movie have issued a warning to those planning on seeing the much-hyped animated film in cinemas.
Released on Wednesday (5 April), the film is an adaptation of the hit Nintendo video game franchise, and stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black and Charlie Day.
The Super Mario Bros Movie has been receiving poor reviews, including from The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey. Meanwhile, gamers have praised the movie’s fidelity to the source material, and the plethora of Easter eggs contained within it.
As many cinema-goers have warned, however, one of the biggest Easter eggs will be missed by many who go to see the film.
That’s because it features at the very end of the credits. While the film also features a light-hearted mid-credits scene, The Super Mario Bros Movie uses the very end of its runtime to tease a major character from the Mario games.

As I mentioned in last week’s review of the big D&d flick (which topped the box office charts), the 2023 Spring season of game and toy based-movies has finally reached its biggest destination, or at least until Mattel’s “power couple” arrives. And much like last week’s trio of releases, it’s a nostalgic ‘deep dive”, going back over 40 years. Mind you this duo and their giant video game franchise hit the big screen 30 years, in live-action, and is now considered a loopy bit of campy fun. Ah, but there’s no more glued-on phony facial hair in this one because it’s all rendered in lush computer-generated animation by one of the more successful not-Pixar studios of the past couple of decades.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is here. While the reviews have been decidedly mixed (our critic loved it), there’s probably a part of you – however small – that doesn’t care what the write-ups say; you are going to see a brightly colored, vibrantly paced animated feature based on one of the most beloved videogame properties of all time. And there’s nothing any review can say that will make you veer from your mission.
But the question remains – is there a post-credits scene after the actual movie, which stars Chris Pine (as Mario), Charlie Day (as Luigi), Jack Black (as Bowser), Anya Taylor-Joy (as Princess Peach), Keegan-Michael Key (as Toad) and Seth Rogen (as Donkey Kong)? Or are you free to gather up your belongings and exit your Mario Kart as soon as the adventure is over? Read on to find out!

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is finally in theaters, and it's on like Donkey Kong! Donkey Kong is one of the main characters, and he's voiced by Seth Rogen. As you've likely seen in the trailers, Dk is a bit of a blowhard and a goofball, but what he really wants in life is to impress his dad Cranky Kong (Fred Armisen). When Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Mario (Chris Pratt) set off to rescue Luigi (Charlie Day) and beat Bowser (Jack Black) once and for all, they need the help of the Kongs and their army to do so. To convince them, Mario has to beat Dk in an arena battle.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" has finally hit theaters, and fans are getting a chance to hang with all their favorite Nintendo characters like Mario (Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and Bowser (Jack Black). Mario, Peach, and Toad are off on an adventure to save Luigi from Bowser's clutches with the help of Donkey Kong and an army from his land. Bowser, on the other hand, is trying with all his might to get Peach to marry him.
We journey through the Mushroom Kingdom, race a la "Mario Kart," and go through obstacle courses that make you feel like you're playing the game without having to constantly redo levels. (What? I love games. That doesn't mean I'm good at them.) However, one character stands out for me and perhaps for you as well. Even if you haven't seen the film yet,...

“He’s the leader of the bunch, you know him well, he’s finally back to kick some tail.” That’s right, Seth Rogen is lending his voice to Donkey Kong to this week’s The Super Mario Bros Movie animated feature from Illumination Entertainment, and he’s brought with him a famous (of sorts) ‘90s rap. The actor confirms as much when we ask if there was an iconic line or catchphrase he got to say as Donkey Kong.
“I pushed hard for the [“Dk Rap”] to be in the movie,” Rogen reveals to Den of Geek. The rap that Rogen refers to is the one from the Donkey Kong 64, a 1999 N64 release and Dk’s first solo game as a 3D platformer. The song, which was written for that game and was featured heavily in the marketing, is about Donkey Kong and his friends, and it would play each time the game boots up.

The Super Mario Bros movie: Mario fans issue warning to potential cinema-goers over Chris Pratt film

Keegan-Michael Key has joked that “Earl Grey tea and really tight pants” were the secret to his Toad impression in The Super Mario Bros Movie.
The comedian joins a voice cast including Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Anya Taylor-Joy in the animated remake of the classic Nintendo game, with Key voicing the high-pitched mushroom Toad.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show on Tuesday (4 April), host Jimmy Fallon asked Key how he made his voice sound “totally different” as Toad.
The comedian explained that he’d initially tried to impersonate a friend who likes to emphasise the wrong words in sentences.
“I went to the director and I started doing that, and the director was like, ‘That’s cool. I like that. Can you get the voice a little bit higher?’” Key recalled, before making his voice slightly higher and saying: “Yeah, yeah, sure, I can get it a little bit higher.

Plot: Two plucky Brooklyn plumbers are whisked away to a magic kingdom where they encounter a princess and battle an evil villain.
Review: He’s Nintendo’s most famous character, but boy, has Super Mario ever proven to be a tough character to adapt to the big screen! As we previously covered on our show Awfully Good, the 1993 big-screen live-action version of Super Mario Bros was a disaster. But now, thirty years later, a faithful version of the classic video game series has finally hit the silver screen, with it doing the series justice in the only way they ever really could – by making it animated.
Coming from Universal and Illumination, The Super Mario Bros. Movie seems likely to spin off another popular franchise for the two studios, who already have the Despicable Me, Minions and Sing series going strong. Fans of the game will appreciate all the easter eggs,...
