Sundance filmmakers should prepare for a streaming reality without buffering. Sales agents are telling their clients that Amazon Video Direct is not expected to offer its Film Festival Stars program at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Open to official selections at major festivals, the two-year-old Ffs offered cash bonuses and preferential royalty rates for filmmakers to self-distribute their films on Amazon Prime.
According to multiple sources, Amazon has put Ffs on hiatus as the company takes a hard look at its future. Distribution partners, sales agents, and the festival itself has not heard from Amazon Video Direct in months, most telling IndieWire they would be “shocked” if the Ffs deal returned for Sundance.
When “streaming platform” entered the filmmaker vocabulary just a few years ago, it sounded like an indie godsend — a way to ensure that virtually any film could find an audience, if not a buyer. However, the...

If anyone could have been mentally prepared for M.I.A.’s savagely tepid response to his documentary about her, it’s Steven Loveridge. The soft-spoken British filmmaker and the British Tamil pop icon go way back to their art school days at Central Saint Martins, but after seeing “Matangi / Maya / M.I.A.” for the first time at the Sundance Film Festival, Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam set him straight. “It’s not the film that I would have made,” she said during a live Q&A, adding that Loveridge “took all my cool out.”
“That was excruciating, showing it to her at Sundance,” Loveridge said during a recent phone interview. “That was not a good idea, to spring it on her in the audience and say, ‘Now, welcome to stage, M.I.A. and Steve Loveridge,’ and then I have to say to her, ‘What do you think of the film?’ Live, at Sundance,...

September brings the merciful end of blockbuster season and a beginning to the merciless onslaught of awards season. That means you get Robert Redford’s final performance, Matthew McConaughey aiming for Oscar-sanctified sleaziness and the makers of TV’s This Is Us letting a host of famous names mount a full-frontal assault on your tear ducts. Plus you can choose from name-driven documentaries (will it be M.I.A. or Michael Moore?) and outrageously violent fever dreams (demon-killer Nic Cage or gun-toting teenyboppers). All this and the return of the Predator! Here...

It's that vocals that always gets you first – the snarl that comes through Joan Jett's singing, sandpaper-rough around the edges and 100-percent fuck-you attitude. Yes, she's a first-class rhythm guitarist (listen the opening of the Runaways' "You Drive Me Wild" and tell us that's not gloriously, gut-punchingly rifftastic). But that voice ... that's what rock & roll sounds like. Seductive. Jagged. Rebellious. Like her vocal cords are going to jump out of her throat and kick your ass.
