As a baby, raised in Germany, to an American father and German mother, young John was nicknamed "Pudge" by his dad. When his German grandparents asked what the name was, his father was calling the boy, his mother spelled the sound out phonetically as "Potsch". Potsch is Pudge spoken with a German accent.
