ORLANDO -- Although tucked into a resort comfortably removed from the political campaigning that was rolling through the battleground state of Florida, passions still flared among attendees at ShowEast 2004. Much of the heat in exhibition and distribution discussions was because of the fact that this year's boxoffice is up over 2003's year-to-date total and could register a year-end surge. A wealth of promising product reels from the major studios and independent distributors, reports of incremental progress in the digital cinema rollout and talk of international market expansion in Latin American and India were added kindling for the convention's optimistic tenor as ShowEast concluded its four-day run Thursday at the Orlando Marriott World Center. At ShowEast's closing night gala dinner, filmmaker Brett Ratner, whose next film, New Line Cinema's After the Sunset, will be released Nov. 12, received a Kodak career achievement award from Kodak execs Bill Doeren and Bill Tompkins. With 1,250 participants, attendance was up 10%-11% from last year, according to Bob Sunshine, vp at VNU Expositions Film Group, organizers of ShowEast. Sunshine also cited a 30% increase in international attendance with 60-65 new registrants from Latin America alone.
