Though it would take three decades for “Being the Ricardos” writer-director Aaron Sorkin to cast J.K. Simmons in something Sorkin wrote, the filmmaker well remembers when the urge first came to him.
“He was an understudy in my first play ‘A Few Good Men,’ back in 1990,” Sorkin told IndieWire of the now widely esteemed actor, “And I got a call from the stage manager just to alert me that he was going on at a Wednesday matinee, so I ran to the theater. I wanted to catch his performance, understudying the role that Jack Nicholson played in the movie. He just blew the roof off the theater, a full house on Broadway went crazy. And I knew after his first scene, ‘This guy is a star. Keep your eye on him, keep yourself handcuffed to him.'”

ESPN’s “E60” will take a look at baseball great Barry Bonds as he approaches his last year of eligibility on the writers’ ballot for candidates for the Baseball Hall of Fame, a sign that allegations around his use of performance-enhancing drugs have tarnished some parts of his legacy.
The ESPN program will present “Bonds” on Nov. 7 at 9:30 p.m. Et, with Jeremy Schaap reporting. Over the course of his 22-season career, Bonds amassed a record 762 career home runs, a record 73 home runs in a single season and eight Gold Gloves. But, he was indicted in 2007 on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice during the federal government’s investigation into a steroid manufacturer. The perjury charge was dropped and an obstruction conviction was later overturned. Even so, Bonds has not played baseball for a professional team since 2007.

On the Calgary set of FX's "Fargo" last month, most of the cast was there either shooting or dropping by on an off-day to chat with a group reporters. Billy Bob Thornton couldn't make it, but sent his regrets and expressed the desire to talk to all of the assembled scribes pre-premiere. That's the sort of thing you hear a lot in-the-moment, but doesn't normally come to pass. Things slip through the cracks and nobody's really to blame. People get busy. Billy Bob Thornton followed through. After a series of crossed wires and adjusted schedules, the Oscar-winning "Slingblade" scribe checked in last Sunday morning, delayed only because he got caught-up watching early baseball, which immediately gives us something in common. "You can imagine what I think about your team," Thornton drawls. He's famously a Cardinals fan. I'm not-especially-famously a Red Sox fan. "You guys just creamed us twice," Thornton admits,...

Where's George Brett when you need him?
Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson broke form with baseball's oh so important unwritten rules last night, instructing umpires to inspect the glove of Rays pitcher Joel Peralta for pine tar. Rays manager Joe Maddon called Johnson's play "bogus," "bush" and a "pussy move." And Maddon is one hundred percent correct (video of Maddon discussing the incident below).
Peralta pitched for the Nationals in 2010, so his former teammates must have known that Peralta likes to load his glove with pine tar, which is illegal for pitchers, but not the least bit uncommon. Johnson, acting on inside information on Peralta, requested that umpires inspect Peralta's glove. Umps found what they called a "significant amount of pine tar" and Joel Peralta was ejected before he even threw a pitch.
The problem with what Davey Johnson did is that his info on Peralta was ill-gotten. It didn't...

Has anyone else noticed that Alex Avila and Jim Leyland have grown to be the best of friends lately? I don't remember Leyland showing as much affection for a current Tigers player at any point during his tenure in Detroit. I keep seeing them hamming it up in the dugout, and it's not hard to see why Avila would be such a beloved guy for a manager. He plays hard, he plays smart, he plays hurt, he's a great teammate, he does little things well. And Leyland, a former catcher, always has a soft spot for his own kind.
So Leyland must have been going through a little withdrawal lately since Avila has been on the disabled list and not travelling with the team.
Today in a pregame press meeting, Leyland was giving updates on his myriad injured players. When he came to Avila, he said:
"Alex is feeling great.

Charlie Sheen sat down with "Today Show" correspondent Jeff Rossen and by now, his antics have become infamous across the 'net. We wanted to help those of you who have viewed the interview and have some questions.
Sheen mentions at one point that he won't struggle with addiction any more because he's not weak, like a person who doesn't have "tiger blood and Adonis DNA," implying that he does, in fact, possess those things.
Tiger blood, one has to assume, means blood running through his veins of an actual tiger and not, for example, stashed vials in his mansion containing the blood of Ty Cobb or Jim Leyland. Charlie's father is Martin Sheen and while Martin's not a literal tiger, we'd buy that he's a figurative tiger.
Adonis DNA, for all of you who are Googling that, is not a real thing. Again, Charlie Sheen is implying that he has the genetic makeup of Adonis,...

Wednesday, June 2 will forever be in baseball fans' minds as the night we saw Detroit Tigers' pitcher Armando Galarraga throw the third perfect game inside of a month. It would have been only the 21st perfecto thrown in 135 years of baseball. It's considered one of the rarest feats in all of sports. To have two perfect games thrown in the same season is remarkable, let alone three thrown in the span of 25 days.
And after first base umpire Jim Joyce blew the call on what would have been the 27th out, as fans booed and the announcers went crazy, what did pitcher Armando Galarraga do? He smiled, readjusted his cap and headed back to the mound to finish the game. It brings tears to our eyes just thinking about it.
Other people yelled and screamed. Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland (and several players) gave the umpire the business. But not Galarraga.
