Director Samit Kakkad, who is currently enjoying the response to his streaming series ‘Dharavi Bank’, has grown up in Dharavi. Hence, he didn’t have to prepare too much to shoot for the series since the area bought him a sense of familiarity.
While his father Amar Kakkad has been into the world of advertisement, his mother ran a small factory in Dharavi.
Talking about the same, he said: “The technical recce and preparation took us around seven months. I didn’t need to prepare myself to shoot in Dharavi. It’s where I played as a child. My mother ran a factory inside Dharavi. I used to spend hours playing in the bylanes with the children of the women who worked for my mother. I made friends with the locals and that area is like my second home.”

Samit Kakkad, the director of the recently released streaming series ‘Dharavi Bank’, has called Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, a “one-take actor”. He was impressed by how well the actor was prepared for his part in the series.
Elaborating on the same, Kakkad said: “It is always a very enriching and fruitful experience when we get to work with actors such as Vivek who are aware of the pre-requisites and inner workings of the craft. He’s undoubtedly one of the hardest-working actors, and with his level of commitment from beginning to end, the process is made significantly simpler. The kind of preparation that he brings to the table is unparalleled.”
Vivek plays the role of Jcp Jayant Gavaskar in the Mx Original Series, which also stars his ‘Shootout at Lokhandwala’ co-star Suniel Shetty. Unlike the cops that Vivek has essayed earlier, this time around in ‘Dharavi Bank’, fury and rage...

Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi, who is awaiting the release of his streaming show ‘Dharavi Bank’, has opened up about his physical transformation for the Ott show.
During his research, he realised the physique of the cop he is playing would be very different from his own chiselled self. It required to bulk up and don a whole new look.
The actor put on 10 kilos, with a combination of right diet and right exercise and aptly beefed up for the part.
He said, “I started much ahead in time, following a well charted out regime. We took references from real life cops. While drama is integral to the show, we wanted the look and feel to be as real and believable as possible. A well balanced meal, as prescribed by my nutritionist was the starting point. It was a healthy combination of carbs with protein.”

Actor Suniel Shetty will be seen playing the role of Thalaivan – a powerful, ruthless and unattainable kingpin of India’s largest slum Dharavi in the upcoming series ‘Dharavi Bank’. To aesthetically portray the part of this 63-year-old villain, the team had to use prosthetics to make him look over 60.
Speaking about the actor’s commitment to this role, Director Samit Kakkad said, “Anna would report on location at 5 a.m. on the dot because it would take him four hours to do hair and make-up with the use of prosthetics.”
“Thalaivan’s character spans across different age groups in the series and to showcase this progression, we had to make Anna age himself because he is so fit that nobody would believe he is playing a 63-year-old without prosthetics.”
“He helms a Rs 30,000 crore empire and his face and posture had to reflect the responsibilities he has and the experiences...

Filmmaker Samit Kakkad is excited about his first digital series "Indori Ishq", and says the show allowed him to delve into a young couple's psyche.
"As a filmmaker, I've honed the art of crafting stories in an edgy and realistic style -- the emotions, the pain, the pleasures are all as real as it gets. With 'Indori Ishq', I could delve into a young couple's psyche, which was fun for me. I had a great time shooting this show in Mumbai and Indore, exploring untapped locations with an extremely dedicated team. We had extensive schedules, and we've tapped both the cities in shades that have never been seen before," said Kakkad.
"Indori Ishq" explores the concept of unrequited love and delves into the modern-day dynamics of commitment and fidelity in a boy-girl relationship. The nine-episode show, which launched on June 10, narrates Kunal's story of love, heartbreak at the hands of Tara,...

Samit Kakkad, director of the upcoming teenage romance web series "Indori Ishq", says the story looks at infidelity from a different angle, where the boy is cheated by the girl and is expected to move on.
The story revolves around the unrequited love of a young guy who ends up the victim in an unfaithful relationship. The narrative tries to explore how the rules of commitment and being faithful in a relationship are drastically different for the sexes.
"Relationships can sustain only if both individuals are equally invested in making it work. With 'Indori Ishq', we've highlighted how Kunal (the protagonist) falls prey to the cheating ways of Tara but he's so madly in love that he is willing to overlook her infidelity. He's on the verge of losing his self-respect and he unwittingly pushes himself into a world of pain. However, the reactions from society would have...

On my recent trip to India to attend the Nfdc Film Bazaar, India's largest film market, I got to see snippets of lots of great looking projects that may or may not ever see the light of day. One of those projects, that literally left my jaw dropped at its audacity was Samit Kakkad's upcoming feature film, Ascharya Fuck It. Ascharya Fuck It is based on the short stories of Saadat Hasan Manto, one of South Asia's most revered modern writers. While I haven't read any of Manto's work, it's notoriously brazen in its depiction of the unmentionable dark corners of society, and Kakkad's new film doesn't shy away from the more salacious details of life in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai. The story, as...

This year’s London Indian Film Festival boasts an incredible selection of film viewing over the next week. Not sure what to choose? Here are a few bite sized mini-reviews to whet your appetite.
The Cinema Travellers — directed by Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya
Last year I had the pleasure of screening the Liff 2016 presentation of the Bengali film Cinemawala, which presented a fictional view of the decline of the traditional Indian cinema hall in the face of changing technology and an ever growing market in pirated films. This year, Liff 2017 presents the documentary The Cinema Travellers, directed by Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya, which touches on a similar theme: the decline of travelling film projectors and their operators, again in face of a changing technological landscape.
The film made a stunning debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016 and has gone on to screen to enthusiastic and appreciate audiences...

Life lessons are learned, separated family members are reunited and a mother’s love is validated in the predictable but satisfying Indian comedic drama Half Ticket. A Mumbai-set, Marathi-language remake of the 2015 Tamil film The Crow’s Egg, Samit Kakkad’s third feature was distributed domestically by Fox Star Studios last July and could see some very modest art house business if Fox decided to follow up with a U.S. release.

Half Ticket is a Marathi film that explores the story of two children living in the slums of Mumbai. The team of Half Ticket released the third poster for the movie today. With the movie set in Mumbai, the poster depicts the rare and iconic double-decker buses of Mumbai.
The movie is set on streets of Mumbai and captures the essence of this great city in a way that has never been seen before. Just like the 2nd poster, which had an image of a Mumbai shipyard in vividly bright colours and 2 children, the third poster is an image of two double-decker buses in similar bright colours and the silhouettes of the same 2 children.
The themes of all these posters clearly depict a Mumbai influence and the bright colours set the mood for what is sure to be an upbeat and endearing film. A Video Palace production and directed by Samit Kakkad,...
