Ever since audiences—at least according to myth—ran screaming from the premiere screening of Auguste and Louis Lumière’s 1895 short black-and-white silent documentary Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, the histories of filmgoing and horror have been inextricably intertwined. Through the decades—and subsequent crazes for color and sound, stereoscopy and anamorphosis—since that train threatened to barrel into the front row, there’s never been a time when audiences didn’t clamor for the palpating fingers of fear. Horror films remain perennially popular, despite periodic (and always exaggerated) rumors of their demise, even in the face of steadily declining ticket sales and desperately shifting models of distribution.
Into the new millennium, horror films have retained their power to shock and outrage by continuing to plumb our deepest primordial terrors, to incarnate our sickest, most socially unpalatable fantasies. They are, in what amounts to a particularly delicious irony,...

People often find their true physical and emotional strength during their most vulnerable times of peril, as they’re forced to fight to save themselves and their families, especially against a villain in disguise. That’s certainly the case for actress Camille Sullivan’s initially at-times meek protagonist of Anne in the new horror film, ‘Hunter Hunter.’ She […]

Why is it that some people feel the need to prove to themselves that they can take on anything all by themselves, no matter how difficult or dangerous? Sometimes it's a response to trauma, which is one of the central concerns of Shawn Linden's drama - a way of stress testing oneself to provide reassurance that nothing can happen which one can't handle. On other occasions it's about a desire to prove oneself to wider society. There seem to be elements of both in Joe Mersault's decision to try and carve out a living as a backwoods fur trapper, and that would be fair enough, but his decisions also have consequences for the family he has taken with him.
Joe (Devon Sawa) is a practical man who finds pride in what he can make with his own two hands. He knows his business well and his young teenage daughter Renée (Summer.

In the world of “Hunter Hunter,” director Shawn Linden’s backwoods horror movie, humans are carrion in the talons of nature. This survivalist thriller set in the Manitoba wilderness packs a gut-twisting punch in its final moments as a family of fur trappers (led by a grizzled Devon Sawa) faces the cruel indifference of the forest. While “Hunter Hunter” initially primes audiences for a man-versus-nature story about humans trying to outdo a cunning wolf, the film spirals into much darker terrain as the sun turns anemic, the body count rises, and hope fizzles out. While the grindhouse levels of shock and gore piled on in the third act may seem out of the cold blue, “Hunter Hunter” carefully lays the groundwork throughout for .
An almost post-apocalyptic vibe hangs over the Manitoba forest, bringing to mind films like “The Road” and the video game “The Last of Us,” soon to become an HBO series.

Sheep Thrills: Linden Gets Under Your Skin with Slow Burn Thriller
Canada’s Shawn Linden certainly leaves a lasting impression with his third outing, Hunter Hunter, assembling an intriguing cast for a simmering exercise on evils lurking in the woods. While the parameters are certainly familiar and some niggling details concerning characterizations tend to distract, a lead performance from Camille Sullivan moves the narrative along from restless anxiety to full on freak fest. Borrowing thematically and aesthetically from 1970s American horror classics, Linden packs an unexpected punch in the final throes which arguably eclipses the overarching conversation on the narrative. But for many horror films which tend to falter in the third act, Linden delivers a grueling salve.…...

Devon Sawa is no stranger to the horror genre but in the second phase of his career, he's become a little more selective about the projects he attaches himself to. The latest is Hunter Hunter.
The new horror film from Canadian writer/director Shawn Linden stars Sawa and fellow Canadian Camille Sullivan as Joseph and Anne respectively, a couple living with their daughter in the remote woods away from society and most other people. The family traps and scavenge for survival, living off the land. It's a hard life but one that the family embraces but when they become the target of a wolf, their already difficult task of survival is made even harder. And then there's an unexpected turn...

Since my parents inexplicably failed to instill in me a love for killing at an early age, I’ve never gone hunting. But I can imagine that it takes a lot of patience and exactitude before achieving the satisfaction of the final result.
Shawn Linden’s new thriller Hunter Hunter is a lot like that.
The film’s title is repetitive by design, providing a not-so-subtle hint that there will be more than one stalker of living creatures on display. The first of these in the 1990s-set story is Joseph (Devon Sawa, of Final Destination and Idle Hands), a fur trapper who lives with ...

The struggle to survive in uncertain times is nothing new, but 2020 has made us all aware of the “wolves” just outside the door. IFC’s “Hunter Hunter” seeks to explore this battle between nature, people, and mysteries better left unsettled. The horror thriller forgoes overt special effects, instead opting for an authentic sense of what it means to be prey.

Camille Sullivan stars with Devon Sawa, and Nick Stahl in Hunter Hunter, the new film from writer/director Shawn Linden.
Anne and Joseph (Sullivan and Sawa) are living in the remote wilderness with their daughter Renee (Summer H. Howell), making their living and surviving as fur trappers. That quiet existence is broken when the family think they're being hunted by a rogue wolf, sending Joseph on a tracking mission. Enter Lou (Stahl), who randomly shows up and enters the family's life unannounced which begs a couple of questions: is he the killer? Is he the wolf?
We'll have to wait to find out for sure but it certainly seems that there's a twist coming at some point in this story.

"What if we can't make it out before the freeze...?" IFC Midnight has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Hunter Hunter, made by Canadian filmmaker Shawn Linden. This hasn't premiered at any festivals, but will be out on VOD in December for anyone interested in watching. Joseph Mersault and his family live in the remote wilderness as fur trappers, but their tranquility is threatened when they think they are being hunted by the return of a rogue wolf, and Joseph leaves them behind to track it. When they hear a strange noise outside their cabin, Anne hopes it is Joseph but instead finds a man named Lou, who has been severely injured and left for dead. So what's really out there? Hunter Hunter stars Devon Sawa, Nick Stahl, Camille Sullivan, Summer Howell, and Gabriel Daniels. This looks solid, boasting some excellent production design and terrifying forest scenes.

Ben C. Lucas has been signed to direct The Duelist, a neo-Western developed at Gold Circle Films. According to Variety, Shawn Linden sold the initial spec this past Spring and Lana Shadgett performed recent rewrites.
Lucas directed the 2010 Aussie thriller Wasted on the Young about two brothers left to the mercy of their classmates after a traumatic event at a high school party. The film played several film festivals, including Sydney, Toronto and SXSW, and received middling reviews from both critics and users on Rotten Tomatoes, praised for its impressive visual style and slammed for its incoherent script.
Linden’s wrote The Duelist over four years ago (it was a finalist for the Gotham Screen screenplay contest in 2007), but I got my hands on a July 2011 draft with Shadgett’s revisions. As an obvious disclaimer, details may change in its adaptation to the screen.
