For the majority of John Oates’ professional career, solo work was a means to keep busy and creatively fulfilled between the Daryl Hall & John Oates projects that took up most of his time. But now that the duo has hopelessly fractured after more than 50 years of partnership, Oates has the time to concentrate all his energies on his own music, beginning with his new LP, Reunion, out May 17.

Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Ordinary Angels is the latest film to feature Hilary Swank playing a real-life character, and it’s directed by Jon Gunn, who’s made a name for himself both writing and directing films that tell real-life stories. He’s written American Underdog, the film about former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner; I Still Believe, a film based on the life of Christian singer Jeremy Camp; and Jesus Revolution, based on a true story, while the last movie he directed, The Case for Christ, was also based on a true story. According to Swank, Gunn was the perfect choice for a movie like Ordinary Angels, and she really appreciated his approach to filmmaking. Hilary Swank as Sharon in Ordinary Angels. Photo Credit: Allen Fraser Hilary Swank won the first of her two Oscars for playing a real-life character in Boys Don’t Cry. Between feature films and television movies, she’s made a habit of playing real-life figures — at least 10 of them, including her role in the new films Ordinary Angels. In the film, she plays a Kentucky woman who helps save the life of a young girl during a snowstorm that paralyzed the region. When we spoke to Swank about the movie, she said she loves bringing these kinds of true stories to life on the screen. The Christmas action movie Violent Night turned Santa Claus (David Harbour) into an action hero. When a villain named Scrooge (John Leguizamo) takes a family hostage, Santa is the only one who can save the day. It’s not Leguizamo’s first villain role. He was the guy who shot Harrison Ford in Regarding Henry and one of Col. Stuart (William Sadler)’s henchmen in Die Hard 2, but leading the bad guys made up for a 32-year-old slight.

Leguizamo spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet on Feb. 9 about Violent Night. We’ll have more with Leguizamo about some of his other memorable roles, but first here’s how Violent Night made up for Die Hard 2. Violent Night is available on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD now.

Like a cyanide-laced sugarplum, Violent Night is a jolly and vicious burst of holiday mayhem. Bloody and crass, yet brimming with Christmas spirit, it’s a 110-minute joke that largely works because of how firmly everyone involved commits to the bit.
David Harbour stars as Santa Claus, first seen drinking his holiday blues away at a London watering hole. Santa’s having a rough Christmas Eve; kids are getting greedier and naughtier every year, and he’s thinking of hanging up the hat. His night doesn’t get any easier when he heads to the United States-based home of a wealthy, heartless matriarch (Beverly D’Angelo), whose family has been taken hostage by a gang of thieves (led by John Leguizamo). While his first instinct is to fly off and finish his route, the presence of an innocent child (Leah Brady) causes Santa to reconsider, call upon the skills he learned...

While the new film, Nobody, may bring to mind films like John Wick (2014) and Taken (2008), it serves its own hero rather well by delivering only a passing explanation of the “particular set of skills” that the hero ostensibly possesses and instead delivering the action with gleeful abandon.
After thieves break into his seemingly idyllic suburban home, Hutch (Bob Odenkirk) opts not to resort to violence to rid the home of the intruders. This disappoints his teenage son, Blake (Gage Monroe), who views him as a coward. Afterward, Hutch and his wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen), begin to grow even further apart. Now, simmering with his checked rage, Hutch is again put in another brutal situation when the bus he takes every day to work is commandeered by a group of weapon-brandishing thugs who threaten all aboard. This triggers something within Hutch and the aforementioned skills come into play. Of course, this...

Going from the theater world and studying at Columbia University to starring in a feature film with Sarah Paulson would be daunting for even the most seasoned actors, yet that's exactly what newcomer Kiera Allen did for Hulu's Run, premiering Nov. 20. The film sees Allen as Chloe, the teenage daughter of Paulson's Diane, who begins to realize that her controlling mother has been hiding a dark secret from her and may not have her best interests at heart.
When it came to making the jump from stage to screen, Allen was most surprised that a lot of the skills carried over. "I think I was nervous because I'd never done a feature film before," she told Popsugar. "But I was very surprised, and very gratified, to find that most of the skills from acting in theater carry over to film. It's just about learning." And...

If you know Tim Roth, and can appreciate watching one of the world’s finest actors no matter what he’s in, Tin Star doesn’t need to sell you. If you need more, things get a little complicated, especially if you have trouble suspending disbelief when it comes to somewhat laughably evil people.
Something like a mix of Longmire, Fargo, and tragedy porn, Tin Star stars Tim Roth as Jim Worth, a London cop who has moved his family to a small town in Canada to take over as the chief of police. What seems like a standard move out of the big city for a more idyllic life in a rural community quickly runs into the machinations of an oil company and its plans for a nearby refinery. Events almost immediately turn tragic and Jim finds himself struggling anew with his alcohol and drug addiction.
