Joe Gallo, a killer for the Colombo crime family, was murdered in Umberto's Clam House--a restaurant in New York's Little Italy that was owned by Ianniello's father--by four gunmen. One of them was later identified as a member of the Genovese crime family, which was locked in a deadly struggle with the Colombo family. Ianniello himself was a member of the Genovese organization and was in fact at the restaurant when Gallo was killed but denied any knowledge of the murder.
