The antics of Sooty, Sweep and Soo have brought entertainment to many over the past few decades. Originally a show with just Sooty and Sweep, show creator Harry Corbett had the idea of introducing another character, Soo, to the show. Soo was to be the talking character, and he mooted the idea to the show’s producer, Trevor Hill, back in 1965.
The answer? A swift no from the high ups of the BBC, “on the grounds that sex would be creeping into the programme”.
Corbett would go to his local pub afterwards and bemoan the decision. A reporter overheard him, asked if he could run the story, and Corbett agreed. It was, after all, factual.
