The first solo album from former Slayer guitarist Kerry King is basically the “Still D.R.E.” of thrash metal.
But where Dr. Dre wanted to remind his fans that he was still puffin’ his leafs, still fucking with beats, and still not lovin’ police after close to a decade’s absence, King wants his fans to understand that even though Slayer are essentially hellbound, he’s still Satan’s preeminent ambassador with furious, jagged riffs and sweet nothings like “Crucifixation” and “Everything I Hate About You.” On From Hell I Rise,...

When Slayer announced that they were unexpectedly reuniting to play music festivals this fall, the timing appeared to upstage guitarist Kerry King‘s then-just-announced debut solo album, From Hell I Rise.
In a new interview on Sirius Xm’s Trunk Nation, King was asked about whether the Slayer reunion had a positive or negative impact on promo for his solo album and subsequent tour. He was quick to clarify that the upcoming Slayer dates are one-offs, and the reunion won’t extend beyond the occasional live appearance.
“I see it both ways,” said King [as transcribed by Blabbermouth]. “We’ve [Slayer] been turning down offers for the last four years. Unfortunately, when the right offer came around, this one, it was right as my project was releasing. So there’s certainly people, like my management and booking agents, who say, ‘Oh, that’s great. It’s gonna boost your solo thing.’ And I’m,...

Slayer stunned fans earlier this year when they announced they’d be reuniting for three festival gigs this fall. Among those who were surprised was Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian, who says he messaged Slayer axeman Kerry King and told him, “Thanks for making me look like a liar.”
The timing of Slayer’s announcement was especially surprising considering that King had just unveiled details of his eponymous solo band, including a debut album, From Hell I Rise, set to arrive May 17th, and a summer tour supporting Mastodon and Lamb of God. Slayer’s reunion gigs will follow in the fall at Riot Fest, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock.

Kerry King played his first gig with his eponymous solo band on Tuesday (May 7th) at Chicago metal club Reggies, and the setlist featured numerous Slayer songs as well as cuts from King’s upcoming solo debut, From Hell I Rise.
King’s band is comprised of fellow thrash vets including drummer Paul Bostaph (Slayer), bassist Kyle Sanders (Hellyeah), guitarist Phil Demmel (ex-Machine Head), and Death Angel vocalist Mark Osegueda.

The all-star group opened the show with the live debut of three From Hell I Rise tracks before dipping into the Slayer discography for “Repentless.”
From there, the setlist scattered a handful of other Slayer cuts from various eras among most of the songs from From Hell I Rise. The 17-song set concluded with a crushing back-to-back combo of Slayer staples “Raining Blood” and “Black Magic” that led into the finale of the new...

Kerry King has unveiled the new single “Residue” from his debut solo LP, From Hell I Rise, arriving May 17th. The song is accompanied by the album’s debut music video, offering the first glimpse of the Slayer guitarist’s all-star solo band in action.
“Residue” follows the album’s lead single, “Idle Hands,” which was our Heavy Song of the Week upon its release in February. Both songs have a Slayer vibe to them, as King has stated that his solo project is a sonic extension of his work in the legendary thrash band.

Veteran metal vocalist John Bush is fronting a new supergroup dubbed Category 7, and the band has already inked a deal with Metal Blade Records.
The outfit features Bush alongside guitarists Phil Demmel and Mike Orlando, bassist Jack Gibson (Exodus), and drummer Jason Bittner.
It was Demmel and Orlando who initially conceived the idea for the supergroup, sharing the desire to form a classic twin guitar unit a la Thin Lizzy. Bittner and Gibson were the next two on board, and after demoing early material, the musicians tapped Bush to be the frontman.
“Mike Orlando’s and Phil Demmel’s awesome riffs made writing lyrics over the music a piece of cake,” Bush said via a press release. “The rhythm tandem of Bittner and Gibson rounded out the sound and the connection felt like it was put together in the stars. Obviously, everyone being a veteran of the metal scene made it that much easier.

When Troy Sanders isn’t playing with Mastodon, the singer-bassist helps run his local Florida Little League, acting as league president while also coaching his son’s team and handling other tasks such as umpiring.
For his volunteer efforts, Sanders was named the Positive Coaching Alliance’s 2024 Regional Baseball Coach of the Year. The award announcement was quietly posted in late January, but just picked up by MetalSucks.
Sanders is a Little League alum himself, having played from ages five to 14. He began volunteering after his son signed up for the Indian Rocks Beach (Fla.) Little League at age eight. Sanders cheered his son on from the bleachers for the first two seasons before starting to work in the concession stand, helping as an assistant coach, providing teams snacks, etc.

Last week, Slayer announced their unexpected reunion in the form of two major festival appearances.
The news came just five years after the thrash metal pioneers bid adieu with a celebratory farewell tour in 2019 — shows that certainly felt like a victory lap for the legendary band.
The relatively short-lived retirement has apparently drawn skepticism from some fans, prompting the wife of singer-bassist Tom Araya, Sandra, to make a public statement on social media to inform the “trolls” that she, in fact, convinced Tom to get the back together and that the final decision ultimately came down to him.
“Let’s clarify for the trolls: Tom was done with playing,” wrote Sandra on Instagram [via Blabbermouth]. “I have harassed him for over a year. He agreed Finally. We shared that news with Slayer’s awesome managers and they did the rest! So yes without Tom it wouldn’t have happened.. without me Bugging...

Four years after Slayer wrapped up their farewell tour — and two weeks after guitarist Kerry King said a reunion was unlikely — the thrash metal legends will return this fall for a couple of headlining festival gigs.

Kerry King just unveiled full details of his eponymous solo project, including the band lineup, the debut album, and the first single. At the same time, the guitarist also gave a brutally honest interview to Rolling Stone, declaring that fellow Slayer founder Dave Lombardo “is dead to me.”
When asked if he’s spoken with the drummer since Slayer fired him in 2013, King bluntly stated, “No. Lombardo is dead to me.” He went on to bring up the financial squabble that led to Lombardo’s sacking from the legendary thrash band.
“He went on that tirade when we were on a flight to Australia, and he knew we couldn’t retort for 14 hours, and he threw me under the bus,” said King. “I was the only one keeping him in the band. Tom [Araya] wanted him out before that, and [the late] Jeff [Hanneman] had just gotten the spider bite, so he wasn’t playing with us much.

Kerry King has announced his debut solo album, From Hell I Rise, arriving May 17th, along with the lead single “Idle Hands.” The guitarist has also unveiled the members of his post-Slayer band.
The official announcement comes years after King symbolically left his iconic chain onstage at the end of Slayer’s final concert in 2019 at The Forum in Los Angeles. At the time, King was quick to inform fans that he would be forming a new solo band to carry on the sound and ethos of Slayer — whose retirement King felt was “premature”.
“I knew early on that I wasn’t done,” remarked King in the press release for the album, “and I had no intention of not continuing to play.”

Kerry King moved on from Slayer, whose breakneck-paced declarations of destruction redefined metal for a generation, a long time ago. In 2018, as soon as frontman Tom Araya told him he was done with the band, King says he “shifted gears.”

Kerry King’s long-awaited post-Slayer project will finally see the light of day in 2024. While no formal album announcement has been made as of yet, the metal legend’s outfit will release a debut album produced by Josh Wilbur, as King exclusively tells Heavy Consequence.

Slayer’s classic 1983 debut album, Show No Mercy, is set to receive a 40th anniversary edition vinyl reissue via Metal Blade.
The reissue arrives February 9th in two configurations. The first is a “deluxe-edition” style set featuring a slipcase that houses the LP on “Gold Black Dust” colored vinyl, a turntable slipmat, poster, replica show flyers, and a signing card. It retails for $64.99.
Alternatively, hardcore Slayer fans might be tempted by the extremely limited “Blood Filled” liquid vinyl variant. Limited to 250 copies worldwide, the LP itself is a wonder to behold, as it appears to be actually filled with blood. It would appear the vinyl required a costly production process, as this edition — which does not include the aforementioned ephemera in the standard “deluxe” version — will set you back $199.99 (though the record is sure to become a collectible).

Kerry King has teased what appears to be a 2024 reveal of his long-awaited post-Slayer project.
The guitarist kept things vague, sharing an image of his iconic chain, which he wore for years while performing with Slayer, resting on what looks to be the floor of a stage. The caption reads: “Coming in 2024…”
The image is a callback to the symbolic moment when King removed his chain before lifting it and letting it fall to the stage floor at the end of Slayer’s final concert in 2019 at The Forum in Los Angeles.
“One of the reasons I did the chain drop at the last show was so everybody in the building could hear it,” King later told Dean Guitars in a 2020 interview. “And it wasn’t something I planned. We were doing the last run, and I said, ‘I wanna do this on the last Forum show so people take it more seriously.

A hell of a BBQ awaits: Slayer are now selling a branding iron and bikinis as part of a new merch drop on their online store.
The meat brander retails for $75 and features the band’s iconic logo in die-cast metal. Whether it’s steaks or burgers, you can now literally emblazon your meat with the Slayer pentagram.
The drop also includes a pair of Slayer-themed swimwear pieces ($50 each): a monokini with in black/red with dripping blood, and a bikini with Slayer iconography in a graffiti style.
We sense a theme going here. Recently, we reported on Igloo introducing a new line of Slayer-themed coolers — including a 14-quart KoolTunes Reign in Blood cooler that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, and a smaller seven-quart Little Playmate — so your next outdoor gathering can be exponentially more metal if you’re ready to splurge.

Onetime Megadeth drummer Lee Rauch, who played on one of the band’s early demos, died on Friday (June 23rd). He was 58 years old.
The news of Rauch’s passing was shared on Facebook by his brother Chris. A cause for Lee’s death has yet to be revealed. The post read:
“Today is a very sad day, we lost my brother William Lee Rauch.
Lee was a very strong man of faith so I know he is with God now. He was an Awesome drummer, who helped launch one of the biggest metal names in history by being the first drummer for Megadeth, playing along side Dave Mustaine, Kerry King and David Ellifson. His heart was set on making it big and came very close numerous times.”

Celebrated metal guitarist Kerry King, one of the lead guitarists and founding members of the legendary American thrash metal band Slayer spoke on the death anniversary of co-lead guitarist and co-founder of Slayer, guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died at 49 due to liver failure on June 2, 2013.
In an interview with Metal Hammer, King opened up on the passing of his friend and former band member’s death and also shed some light on Hanneman’s place in the band during the days before his tragic passing. Battling alcoholism, Hanneman had missed several shows between 2011 and 2013.
This led to fellow guitarist and another legend of the thrash genere, Exodus member Gary Holt to fill up for him as a session member, before becoming full-time replacement for him after Hanneman’s passing.
Speaking of his final days, King said Hanneman was on the mend and “wanted nothing more than to come back” to Slayer.

Judas Priest marked their long-awaited induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with a supersized performance of three of their most beloved songs Saturday.
Despite years of estrangement and sharp barbs in the press, the quintet — in their signature leather, studs, and metal chains — welcomed original guitarist K.K. Downing and former drummer Les Binks for likely the loudest performance of the night. The group is one of only a handful of heavy metal bands to claw their way into the institution.

“Community! Community!” The words trumpeted out victoriously last night at Saint Vitus, a long-running metal outpost in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood. During a brief moment between songs by Finnish death-metal apostles Demilich, a mosher had discovered a phone on the floor and called out until its rightful owner claimed it. Then he held up a pair of glasses and called out again until someone felt their way forward from the masses to regain their sight. The group’s frontman, Antti Boman, just looked out bewildered and pleased from the front...

This year, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has once again nominated heavy-metal pioneers Judas Priest for induction. The fact that the group has been eligible for 22 years now and isn’t yet in the Hall after three times on the ballot doesn’t sit well with Kerry King, the former Slayer guitarist, who has been a massive Priest fan since high school.
“Some years, you hear who got in the Rock Hall and you’re like, ‘Well, how did they get in above these other bands?'” he says.

Dave Grohl hasn’t sat still for more than 30 years, so it’s not much of a surprise that he’s ended up creating and starring in his own feature film.
As Pat Smear, one of the founders of L.A. punk legends The Germs, touring guitarist in Nirvana and a cornerstone of Grohl’s Foo Fighters, told him, “Drummers are like sharks, if they stop moving, they’ll die.”
In Studio 666, a horror comedy in the vein of The Evil Dead, perpetual movement doesn’t necessarily prevent death either. (Watch the trailer below.)
Grohl, who came up with the idea of the Open Road Films-distributed film that debuts theatrically on February 25, is a fascinating creature.
For some, he is best known as the drummer of Nirvana; for many he is the founder and frontman of Foo Fighters, a group that began as a solo project and turned into one of the most successful,...

Some of the leading voices in thrash metal recalled their earliest musical influences in an outtake from the documentary Murder in the Front Row.
Metallica’s James Hetfield names Jeff Beck as in inspiration and his bandmate, Robert Trujillo, talks about Stevie Wonder. Anthrax’s Charlie Benante remembers opera in his house growing up, while Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine talks about the British Invasion and Motown. In the three-minute clip, which will accompany the upcoming home-video release of the film, members of Exodus, Slayer, Testament and many other bands all dig deep on their influences.

It probably won’t surprise anyone that Jason Momoa — a.k.a. Khal Drogo, a.k.a. Aquaman — is a devoted metalhead. So when he showed up at The Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday night for Slayer’s farewell concert, he didn’t pass up the chance to sing a Pantera classic with Phil Anselmo.
Anselmo was one of the opening acts for the thrash metal legends, performing alongside his post-Pantera solo band, The Illegals. During the set, Momoa, who was attending the show with his two kids, joined him onstage while he was performing Pantera’s famous ballad “This Love” from their biggest album, “Vulgar Display of Power.”

Slayer’s lengthy farewell tour and the thrash metal legends’ four-decade touring career came to an end Saturday with what was billed as the band’s final concert ever at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
Following the conclusion of “Angel of Death,” the last song of the final show, Slayer spent 10 more minutes onstage, with band mates hugging each other and taking one last photo of themselves together in front of a crowd. Bassist/singer Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King then remained onstage as the crowd continued to shower them with applause and chants.

Jim Jefferies has a secret to tell about Brad Pitt. The movie actor has shown up several times on Comedy Central’s “The Jim Jefferies Show” as its unofficial weatherman, casually sharing the horrors of climate change. But here’s the truth: Pitt hasn’t dropped by in a year.
“This is the one that went viral, even though it was recorded a year ago,” Jefferies said of a recent Brad Pitt segment. The show had leftover footage of Brad doing a LeBron James joke, which felt timely because of the NBA playoffs. Slayer guitarist Kerry King happened to be on set, so they put him in front of a green screen, and it looked like the musician was a fan trying to talk to him.

Slayer are the heaviest band on the planet. Everyone knows this. Their brutal mix of shredding guitars, devastatingly fast blastbeats, snarled vocals, pitch black lyrical themes and ridiculously fast songs not only drove thrash metal into spaces that Metallica and Megadeth could only dream of, it also effectively laid the blueprint for extreme genres such as death metal, grindcore and black metal. There’s no question – without Slayer, metal would be far less pulverising.
The band has been throwing out its dirty, gnarly and aggressive sounds for almost 35 years now, and it has gone through some incredible hardships in that period. The most devastating of these, undoubtedly, was the death of founding Jeff Hanneman in 2013. Along with Tom Araya and Kerry King, he was one of the mainstays on the band, and there can be no doubt that his absence from their eagerly-anticipated 11th album Repentless will be felt keenly.

For what started as an Nyu dorm-room project in 1983, it's safe to say that Rick Rubin’s Def Jam Records has far surpassed the hydroponic tinkerings of your average Bobcat. From its raucous early Beastie Boys releases all the way to its more contemporary Kanye West and Frank Ocean offerings, the label has continually proved itself to be one of hip-hop's most popular and influential entities. In honor of Def Jam's recent 30th anniversary, here's a list (unranked!) of the label's 21 most important albums. 1. Beastie Boys, Licensed to Ill (1986) This album was one of the first to successfully blur the borders of rock and hip-hop. It was the first official Beasties LP and the first full-length rap record to top Billboard charts. Kerry King of then-labelmates Slayer rips the ballsy guitar solo in "No Sleep ‘Til Brooklyn," the rowdy homage to the trio’s home borough. "She’s Crafty" speeds...

From the humbling beginnings the complete domination of the San Francisco Bay Area thrash scene to blowing up in ways nobody could have predicted and becoming a household name with a global fanbase of millions, Metallica have done it all.
Sadly along the way they would lose one of their best friends and key songwriters in the messianic bassist Cliff Burton, however since those very furtive first days the other three members of the band – James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett – have all stayed the course, embarking on this crazy genre-defining, risk-taking adventure together.
Depending on your entry point over the years you may know them as one of The Big Four of thrash metal, ‘those guys who wrote Enter Sandman’, a group of Hawaiian shirt-wearing cigar-chompers who loved hard rock and blues, or just an ever-present behemoth of metal history.

Last night (April 23), Slayer showed up at Revolver magazine's Golden Gods Awards in Los Angeles for a surprise three-song set. Listen to new song “Implode” below and head to the band’s website for a free download. “Implode” is a four-minute romp through Slayer’s various influences, including doom, speed-metal and apocalyptic themes. Guitarist Kerry King told ArtistDirect that the song was intended for a 2012 Ep, which was never released: "It's not directly connected to the Mayan Calendar, but everybody always talks about the world ending. Whether it's with war or disease, that's where I went with it." The new song is Slayer’s first since 2009. The legendary thrash metal band has been quiet since founding member and guitarist Jeff Hanneman died last year. A new album is in the works, according to Rolling Stone, and will be released on the band’s own imprint, in association with Nuclear Blast.
