David Friedman has joined ABC’s morning infotainment program Good Morning America as special Gma Creative Executive, working full-time for several months to help the show ramp up in the fall, Gma senior exec producer Tom Cibrowski announced today. Gma, of course, is now the genre leader in the daypart, besting NBC News’ once dominant Today. Friedman used to be exec producer of CBS’ The Early Show, and started his career at Today. But, these days, he’s maybe best known for the seven years during which he created, launched and exec produced Carson Daly’s late-night show. Most recently, he’s been one of the industry’s go-to guys for live special event programming, including The Biggest Loser finale on NBC. Here’s Cibrowski’s announcement to staff: I’m writing to let you know about a new face you will see here in the near future. I’m...

After 24 years at CBS News, Harry Smith is saying goodbye to the network.
According to TV Guide, Smith is heading to rival broadcaster NBC to launch a new primetime newsmagazine with 'NBC Nightly News' anchor Brian Williams.
Smith began working at CBS in 1987, and most recently co-anchored 'The Early Show' and 'CBS This Morning.' He has also contributed to 'CBS Evening News' as a senior correspondent and substitute anchor.
In December, after CBS announced the changes to 'The Early Show' lineup, executive producer David Friedman said 'Early Show' newsreader Smith would "shift his focus to hard news with an expanded role as primary substitute anchor on 'The Evening News with Katie Couric,' 'Face the Nation' and 'Sunday Morning' while continuing to report major stories for all CBS News broadcasts."

Carson Daly's late-night talk show will not only continue on NBC, but a new producer is coming on board to freshen up the series.
NBC's latest late-night chat show "Last Call With Carson Daly" was considered to be on the bubble during the recent dust-up between Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien.
Now the network is set to announce that new episodes will begin March 1, following a six-week hiatus. The first week back will be stocked with guests who are Academy Award nominees.
Former "Daily Show With Jon Stewart" co-executive producer Stewart Bailey will take over as executive producer of the program. Bailey spent 10 years on the Comedy Central hit, rising through the ranks. Bailey starts working on the program this week, replacing David Friedman.

Rosie O'Donnell is returning to television as host of a variety show revival from NBC.
NBC will air "Rosie's Variety Show" as an hourlong live special the night before Thanksgiving, with an eye toward expansion to a full series order should viewers embrace the project.
The special will feature celebrity guests, musical acts, comedy skits and a prize giveaway for the show's in-studio and home audiences. David Friedman ("Last Call With Carson Daly") has been tapped to executive produce along with O'Donnell.
The show's Nov. 26 premiere date manages to trump Fox's upcoming Osbourne family variety show, which is expected to debut in the winter or spring.
For NBC, the project's live aspect is of particular interest, both as a way of distinguishing the product from competitors and to discourage viewers from time-shifting the show. NBC has aired "America's Got Talent" results shows live this year and plans a quartet of "Saturday Night Live" primetime specials.
