Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired U.S. rights to Copa 71, a documentary about the pioneering “Unofficial Women’s World Cup” that created a sensation in 1971 but has since been virtually erased from history. Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine (Billie) directed the film, which is executive produced by tennis greats Serena and Venus Williams and soccer star Alex Morgan.
Greenwich plans a summer theatrical release of the documentary, a co-production of New Black Films, Dogwoof, and Westbrook Studios.
“In August 1971, soccer teams from England, Argentina, Mexico, France, Denmark, and Italy gathered at Mexico City’s sun-drenched Azteca Stadium,” notes a synopsis of the film. “The scale of the tournament was monumental: lavish sponsorship, extensive TV coverage, merchandise on every street corner, and crowds of over 100,000 roaring fans turn this historic stadium into a cauldron of noise match after match.”
The synopsis continues, “A fawning media treat the players like rock stars.

Shock-rock legend Alice Cooper has been added to the roster of playable characters in Iron Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast free-to-play mobile game.
The addition of Cooper comes with the new dungeon event “Road Rats Forever,” inspired by his latest album Road. The event will take players down “a desolate highway” with Cooper and Maiden mascot Eddie (in Phantom Eddie form) as they head to their next show. Along the way, they encounter “a gang who’ve turned a derelict gas station into a chop shop” and are forced to “bash a few heads along the way.”
Players can choose from four difficulties for the event and earn Alice Cooper as a playable character upon completion. Alternatively, the Alice Cooper character can be unlocked for free by logging in on any seven days until December 15th, unlocking Cooper himself on the seventh day.

After years of nominations, Chaka Khan was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday, with Common, H.E.R., Sia, and Jazmine Sullivan welcoming the singer to the hall at the Brooklyn’s Barclay Center induction ceremony.
Sullivan — who previously performed alongside Khan in a star-studded rendition of “I’m Every Woman” at the 2017 Essence Festival — first delivered the induction speech.
“That voice, as raw as it is sweet, as sensual as it is soulful, has guided us through good times and bad, through meet-ups and breakups,...

Iron Maiden is following a phenomenal performance at Power Trip earlier this month with a 2024 North American leg of its Future Past tour.
“We’re really excited to be bringing The Future Past Tour back to Canada and the United States next year. We know from the reaction of our fans at Power Trip and the shows we played in Canada recently that they really enjoyed hearing new songs from both Senjutsu and Somewhere In Time, and we’ve really enjoyed playing them!” said Bassist Steve Harris.

The historic Power Trip festival kicked off on Friday night (October 6th) in Indio, California. The three-day event features six of the biggest hard rock and heavy metal acts in the world, with two bands performing each night.
Tens of thousands of fans descended upon the Empire Polo Club, the same site where Coachella is held every year. They were greeted by a giant devil-horn-shaped cactus, letting them know that they were in for a weekend of legendary rock music.
Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden had the honor of playing the first night, with Maiden taking the stage first at 6:55 p.m., about 10 minutes later than the advertised 6:45 set time.
Instead of playing a “greatest hits” set, as could have been expected at an event such as Power Trip, Maiden stuck with their current “Future Past World Tour” setlist, which features the band playing songs predominantly from their latest album,...

Two of metal’s most iconic mascots — Iron Maiden’s Eddie and Anthrax’s ornery flatbill-cap-wearing Not-Man — are joining forces for the Among the Living in-game event in Maiden’s Legacy of the Beast mobile game.
For this latest dungeon event, the plot of Anthrax’s recent Among the Living graphic novel serves as the premise, as players venture through the wreckage of a recently destroyed New York City. Not-Man is out for revenge, and he’s got Eddie in tow.
“We couldn’t be happier to be featured in this game,” commented Anthrax, who join an esteemed group of major bands that have appeared in Lotb.
The band continued: “When the idea came up, we were completely taken aback by it, like, ‘Are you serious?’ You have Eddie, one of the greatest mascots of all-time, and the Not-Man. When you see the Non-Man’s face, you identify it with Anthrax.

Ghost have unveiled their cover of Iron Maiden’s “Phantom of the Opera” from the upcoming Phantomime covers EP, arriving this Thursday (May 18th).
Papa Emeritus IV and his Nameless Ghouls do a faithful job covering their heavy metal forefathers on “Phantom of the Opera.” The original Maiden track hails from the British legends’ 1980 debut, featuring singer Paul Di’Anno. However, Ghost’s version harnesses the power and might of the 1985 Live After Death version featuring Bruce Dickinson.
Impressively, the guitar tracks are nearly transposed in accuracy, and Papa stays true to the song’s vocal arrangement while adding his signature melodic flourishes to the mix. For a band that has long wore its Nwobhm influences on its sleeve, the cover marks a consummatory moment in Ghost’s career. It also harkens back to Iron Maiden’s Book of Souls tour in 2016 and 2017, when they brought Ghost along as support.

In the past, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest had something of a rivalry, but in recent years the legendary UK metal acts have expressed a mutual respect for one another. Now, Priest frontman Rob Halford is hoping that Maiden follow the footsteps of his band by finally being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Priest were inducted into the Rock Hall last year via the Musical Excellence Award. Maiden are up for induction this year, along with other nominees such as Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden, and more.
In a new interview with Metal Hammer, Halford said, “Iron Maiden’s nomination is absolutely overdue. I vote for them every day; you can do it by phone and it’s dead easy. It takes you to the list of nominees, then you pick the bands you are voting for – and I pick Maiden every single day.”

A project that was shot a little bit under the radar, Torontonian Kazik Radwanski moved into production on his fourth feature this past late summer reteaming with actress Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson (who is also featured in our most anticipated list at the #104 spot with BlackBerry). A project that was workshopped at the Oxbelly Screenwriters/Directors Labs and received some Canadian coin from Telefilm, Radwanski also reteams with producing partner Dan Montgomery (The Maiden). We’re expecting the usual social realism but with a tinge more of unsettling presence. Radwanski’s 2012’s Tower premiered in Locarno, 2015’s How Heavy This Hammer premiered at TIFF and Berlinale, and Anne at 13,000 ft followed in the same pathway premiering in TIFF’s Platform section followed by the international preem in Berlin.…...
