David Calhoun did a lot of good turning around Nielsen‘s fortunes when he joined as CEO of the ratings company in 2006 after being a top lieutenant at Jack Welch’s Ge. (In this town, that success did not trickle down to one of Nielsen’s holdings, trade mag The Hollywood Reporter, which continued to bleed money and staff under Nielsen control until it was sold off with other publications for a song three years later.) Calhoun, already set to step down as Nielsen CEO on January 1, will join Blackstone Group to head its portfolio-operations group, the Wall Street Journal is reporting today. New York, NY, September 30, 2013 – Nielsen Holdings N.V. (NYSE: Nlsn), a leading global provider of information and insights into what consumers watch and buy, today announced that it has successfully completed its acquisition of Arbitron Inc., an international media and marketing research firm. “This is a great day for Nielsen and a natural step in our evolution,” said Nielsen Chief Executive Officer David Calhoun. “Arbitron will allow us to analyze and understand an additional two hours of the U.S. consumer’s day while bringing us another opportunity to provide advertisers with metrics on the effectiveness of the mediums that they advertise on.” Arbitron is being rebranded Nielsen Audio and will be integrated into Nielsen’s U.S. Watch business segment, which provides information and insights primarily to the media and advertising industries across television, online, mobile and radio. With Arbitron, Nielsen now measures eight hours a day per person of dynamic media consumption.

Arbitron shares are up 25% in pre-market trading after Nielsen Holdings said it would buy the rival ratings company best known for its measurement of radio audiences. Nielsen said it will pay $48 a share, a 26% premium over yesterday’s closing price, for a total of $1.26B. ”Arbitron will help Nielsen better solve for unmeasured areas of media consumption, including streaming audio and out-of-home,” Nielsen CEO David Calhoun says. “The high level of engagement with radio and TV among rapidly growing multicultural audiences makes this central to Nielsen’s priorities.” His company also says it will expand Arbitron’s “Watch” segment’s audience measurement across screens and forms of listening. “These integrated, innovative capabilities will enable broader measurement of consumer media behavior in more markets around the world,” Nielsen President of Global Media Products and Advertiser Solutions Steve Hasker says. The timing of the announcement is surprising: Last week, Arbitron said that...

When one sees a movie poster that was made with five minutes and Microsoft Paint, one wonders if the film is worth mentioning to viewers. When the trailer shows lots of hair flipping, Ouija board playing and not much else one wonders if the film might be best swept under the rug. But sometimes news is best passed on to the fans who are often in a better position to judge a film on its merits. So after this long intro', we have The Good Sisters from director and writer JimmyO Burril. The film is about "black magick" and "an ancient bloodline (The Good Sisters)." Cinesploitation has described the film as: "what seems like a slow burn through the first two acts is just a gradual boil until the pressure builds and it can no longer be contained (Cine')." A couple early reviews are positive and The Good Sisters will...
