When it came to Jeffrey Dahmer’s apartment in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, director Carl Franklin pictured a gritty fish tank filled with yellow-green algae and lifeless fish. He wanted to reach audiences on a visceral level, placing viewers in the notorious serial killer’s putrid living room from the victim’s perspective.
“I wanted to create more of a sensory world as opposed to just a set — something that would evoke a certain aroma or a stench, let’s say, rather than aroma,” Franklin tells Rolling Stone.

Carl Franklin was deep into work when he learned of his Emmy nomination — the second in his career — for directing the first episode of Netflix’s “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” “I was in New York, as I was doing another pilot on a miniseries, and they knew about it! So someone told me, ‘Hey, man, you’re nominated! And congratulations!'” the director shares with Gold Derby during a recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). “And I started noticing these texts that were coming in, and then people said, ‘You were nominated for an Emmy!’ And I said, ‘Really?!’ So I hadn’t expected to, so I thought, ‘That’s cool, man, that’s nice.'”
The “Dahmer” opener, “Bad Meat” — which is the only one of the show’s 10 installments that Franklin helmed — presented the director with a very peculiar challenge. The first iteration...

Two-thirds of the route to a great documentary is the subject matter - and Alex Holmes certainly knows how to spot it. He previously brought Tracy Edwards against-the-odds yacht race tale to screen in Maiden and he’s alighted on another great fight-amid-adversity story with the career of Greg LeMond.
In recent years, the documentary arena surrounding cycling and the Tour De France has mostly focused on the negative side of the sport, thrust into the spotlight by shamed doping-scandal cyclist Lance Armstrong (Holmes himself previously directed Stop At Nothing: The Lance Armstrong Story). Here, with the determined but personable Tour De France winner LeMond, the documentarian offers the flipside of that.
The structure of the documentary itself is formulaic but well executed. LeMond appears as a talking head interview against a tranquil blue background, driving his story from his first go at cycling to the most remarkable win of.

Netflix has produced its fair share of true-crime dramas throughout the years, but nothing has been quite as chilling as "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," which documents the life of the infamous serial killer through intimate vignettes of his troubling life. The 10-episode series, starring Evan Peters, gives viewers a sense of what it was like for Dahmer's family, his victims, and even his neighbors - Glenda Cleveland and Pamela Bass - to watch as his grueling crimes unfolded.
While the show has garnered controversy for glorifying Dahmer's crimes and exploiting the trauma his victims endured, as of Sept. 27, the show is currently Netflix's most-watched title, amassing more than 196 million viewing hours in the past week, per CNN. The hype behind "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story" aligns with the actual hysteria that possessed Americans when Dahmer's story was first revealed.
But how much of the show is rooted in fact?...

The promotional train for Dahmer may have started late, but the lack of publicity for the series has seemingly resulted in more interest.
Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story beat Netflix records in its first week on the streaming service.
After just five days available, it secured 196.2 million hours of viewership, allowing it to hit the #1 spot in several countries.
The numbers make Dahmer the highest first week of viewership for a series debut on Netflix.
Granted, the numbers were probably helped by the fact that the series dropped on a Wednesday instead of a Friday.
We'll have more concrete numbers when the show has been available for longer.
The series narrowly beat Inventing Anna, which netted 195.97 million hours viewed.
Squid Game, which became the streamer's most-watched show ever, kicked off with just over 63 million hours viewed.

Ryan Murphy‘s Netflix series, Dahmer Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, dropped on September 23. The show highlights the story of Tracy Edwards, who escaped from serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and heroically ended Dahmer’s unspeakable crimes… only to then commit several himself.
Dahmer, commonly known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” and “Milwaukee Monster,” killed 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991. His horrific murders involved cannibalism, dismemberment and necrophilia.

As the new miniseries retells, Edwards famously led the police to Dahmer’s apartment and all the gruesome evidence in 1991.
During Edwards’ deeply unsettling 1992 testimony, he recalled, “[Dahmer] was listening to my heart [at knifepoint] because at that point he told me he was going to eat my heart.”
Tragically, Edwards’ life took a turn for the worse in the years following. The once-lauded hero was arrested for property damage, theft, bail jumping, failure to...

On September 21, 2022, “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” premiered on Netflix. The limited series focuses on the infamous serial killer through the lens of his victims and has a starry cast that includes Richard Jenkins, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Molly Ringwald. Held back from critics, presumably so that co-creator Ryan Murphy could protect the viewing experience for audiences without access to Wikipedia, recent television or semi-recent history, Netflix’s Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is an infuriating hodgepodge. (That’s the last time I’m going to use that full idiotic title, one of several things Netflix brass should have had the wherewithal to prevent.)
One can appreciate the performers in Dahmer — Richard Jenkins and Niecy Nash in particular; Evan Peters despite an excess of familiarity in his turn — and respect that Murphy and co-creator Ian Brennan have tangible and meaningful things to say here, while also feeling that the 10-episode series is haphazardly structured, never finds a happy medium between exploration and expectation, and probably would never have existed if adulation for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story had been more universal.

A relative of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims has spoken out against Netflix’s new thriller, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, for “retraumatising” their family.
The show – based on serial killer Dahmer’s real crimes – stars Mare of Easttown actor Evan Peters as the man also known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” and the “Milwaukee Monster”, who committed the murders and dismemberments of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
Since its arrival on the platform on 22 September, some have found the show’s gruesome scenes nauseating, with many angered viewers believing it romanticises and glorifies the tragic murders.
One courtroom scene has gone viral using a side-by-side comparison to the actual 1992 trial. In it, Rita Isbell (portrayed by DaShawn Barnes), the older sister of 19-year-old victim Errol Lindsey, is seen yelling in agony during her trial statement.

Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story opens not on the titular serial killer but on his neighbor Glenda Cleveland (Niecy Nash), who is unable to enjoy her nightly TV ritual due to the incessant drilling and banging occurring in the apartment next door. Her exasperated expression suggests this issue is not a new one.
From there, we cut to Dahmer’s one-bedroom unit, where he is at the tail end of a post-dismemberment cleanup. We get fleeting glimpses of his murderous workshop (bleach, drill, gloves, creepy aquarium, etc.) before following him out the door and into the communal hallway,...

Netflix’s newest addition to its true crime canon is a thriller from Ryan Murphy, who explores the case of one of America’s most notorious serial killers: Jeffrey Dahmer.
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story stars Mare of Easttown actor Evan Peters as the man also known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” or the “Milwaukee Monster”, who committed the murder and dismemberment of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991.
Here are the key points to know about the true story behind the show…
**Warning: this article contains upsetting content***
Dahmer’s background
Dahmer was born in 1960, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to a teletype machine instructor and a chemist.
There are conflicting reports on whether Dahmer was neglected as a child or if he was doted upon, but there appears to be no doubt he was from a broken home. His mother suffered from depression and attempted suicide, and his father was away studying for much of his childhood.

After an incredible start to the summer season last month, June is a bit lighter for acclaimed and/or promising releases, but there’s still a handful of worthwhile options. While we can’t muster up much excitement for the fourth installment of an animated franchise and our writers were mixed on some recent festival favorites finally arriving, we have a pared-down list of ten recommendations to seek out.
10. The Edge of Democracy (Petra Costa; June 19)

Alex Holmes’s documentary charts the challenges faced by Tracy Edwards, skipper of the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World yacht race
Tracy Edwards is the British sailor who made history in 1989 by skippering the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World yacht race. This film tells her story and those of her crew members, as they faced sexist squalls from male competitors, who as greying interviewees don’t look best pleased even now to be talking about when and how Tracy beat them. There was also the press. The Guardian’s Bob Fisher comes in for some criticism.
Edwards showed a staggering amount of leadership and energy on dry land, as well as at sea, assembling her crew and persuading the King of Jordan to provide vital sponsorship. The boat was coyly called Maiden, and Alex Holmes’s film also shows how it punningly...

Writer and director Richie Mehta made promises in his latest project. With “Delhi Crime Story” he had an obligation to honor the story, be compassionate and be on the right side of the story of a 2012 New Delhi gang rape that lead to India changing laws and beginning to fix a broken system.
“Delhi Crime Story” is a seven-part police procedural drama based on the real-life gruesome gang rape of a young Indian woman in New Delhi. The series, detailing the fraught investigation and the race against the clock, follows a true-to-life, no-nonsense female police commissioner who begins to uncover the horrifying details of the fatal assault. The inquiry becomes a serpentine quest for clarity and justice within a corrupt government system and a pervasive culture of misogyny.

Tracy Edwards experienced her “first real taste of sexism and misogyny” when she sailed around the world with an all-female crew from 1989 to 1990 — but almost 30 years later, “Maiden” director Alex Holmes doesn’t think much has changed.
At the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Edwards and Holmes were promoting “Maiden,” which chronicles Edwards’ race around the world with an all-female crew, although male crews dominated the sport. She explained that she was racing with a crew of 17 men and that in the entire race, out of 230 participants, only four were women. That’s when she decided to change it up and skipper the first all-female crew.

The arthouse market in Australia is alive and well but these days in concentrated largely on myriad film festivals, according to Rialto Distribution’s Kelly Rogers.
So Rogers and Lisa Garner, Rialto’s head of film, are aiming to fill a gap in the market for upmarket titles with cross-over potential.
“We’re looking for films and stories that we emotionally connect with and we can see have a clear audience – whatever the genre,” says Garner, who opened the Sydney office in February, taking over from Backlot Films.
“Yes the market is cluttered, but if a film emotionally engages and entertains an audience then the film will find its audience and level.
”As the market shifts and changes we generally buy films based on knowing there’s a strong audience, whether that’s in the theatrical arena or home entertainment or sometimes a film that could go either way.

Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker believes “there’s more at stake than ever before” when it comes to releasing independent and art house movies. In a wide-ranging keynote session at Film London’s Production Finance Market in East London, Barker appraised the current distribution landscape before sitting down with Deadline to discuss the prestige label’s upcoming slate.
“I’m basically very optimistic because I know what needs to be done,” the executive told an industry audience about the current landscape. “I won’t allow pessimism in, but it’s tough. It’s always been difficult. It is hard every five years. But there’s more at stake than ever before. It has to do with film culture and the stability of the world. The challenge we all have is that there’s so much noise in the universe. There are so many options and ways to see films.

Shattering a glass ceiling has rarely been more engrossing — or grueling — than it is in “Maiden,” named after the ship that was the first crewed by an all-female team to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race. Condescendingly little was expected of the “girls” who dared to crash this particular boys’ club nearly three decades ago, but their respectable showing during the intense nine-month race changed the sport’s hitherto extreme gender bias for good. Alex Holmes’ documentary has more than enough human interest to grip viewers with no prior interest in sailing. Its potential as a non-fiction commercial breakout got Sony Pictures Classics’ attention at the Toronto festival, with their theatrical release (and doubtless awards campaigning) plans as yet Tba.
The main protagonist here is Tracy Edwards, the Maiden’s English skipper and the driving force behind its fabled run. Her path to sailing was unorthodox: A problem...

Sony Pictures Classics picked up North American rights to Alex Holmes’ “Maiden,” after the documentary’s world premiere at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival.
“Maiden” tells the inspirational story of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, and how she became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.
Edwards faces opposition on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But refusing to give up, Edwards mortgaged her home and bought a secondhand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line.
