Chennai, May 25 (Ians) Pacer Akash Madhwal picked a sensational five-wicket haul (5/5) and helped Mumbai Indians advance to Qualifier 2 of Ipl 2023 with a thumping 81-win over Lucknow Super Giants in Eliminator at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium, here on Wednesday.
Winning the toss on a pitch, where Lucknow skipper Krunal Pandya had quipped he would have liked to bat first too, Mumbai made 182/8, Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with 41 and 33 respectively, while Tilak Varma hit a 22-ball 26.
But the real impetus came from impact player Nehal Wadhera, who slammed a crucial 23 off 12 balls, including hitting 14 runs in the final over, to take Mumbai to a challenging total. In reply, Lucknow were 68/2 in eight overs at one point in their chase of 183. But from there, they fell like a pack of cards to be 101 all out in 16.3 overs.
Madhwal turned the tide effectively in Mumbai’s favour, finishing with an exceptional 5/5 in 3.1 overs,...

Mumbai were also aided by three hara-kiri run-outs from Lucknow’s batting to book their spot in Qualifier 2, where they will face defending champions Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.
Chasing 183, Mumbai made the breakthrough in the second over as Madhwal had Prerak Mankad slicing to deep point. Two overs later, Mayers miscued pull to mid-on off Chris Jordan.

Mumbai, May 21 (Ians) Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad in what is a must-win encounter for the hosts in their last preliminary league match in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Sunday afternoon.
Mumbai Indians need to win this match by a big margin and hope that Royal Challengers Bangalore (Rcb) either lose their match or have a no-result in their encounter with Gujarat Titans in Bangalore in the second match of the day.
Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said the conditions and nature of the pitch prompted him to opt to field first. He said his team is not worrying too much about the Playoffs spot and is concentrating on playing well.
“(Going by) Just the nature of the pitch and because we’re comfortable chasing. The pitch is a bit dry, it’ll get easier to bat as the sun sets.

Mumbai, May 12 (Ians) Gujarat Titans (Gt) won the toss and elected to bowl first against Mumbai Indians (Mi) in an Ipl 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Friday. Both sides remain unchanged.
“We will bowl first. Looks like a good wicket, dew could have an effect, so chasing could be ideal. We realise the importance of every game, just need to stick to our plans and play good cricket.
It’s important to learn the lessons from your losses, rectify and don’t repeat it. You do make mistakes in such a long tournament. God has been kind with our injuries. Same team as the last game,” Gt skipper Hardik Pandya said at the toss.

We have been practising here for the last 22 years. Sharma, who played 14 first-class matches for Delhi, was left wondering over the turn of events which has left Sonnet without a base now and clouds of uncertainty looming large over its future.

Ahead of the tournament, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting had stated that the impact player rule will negate the role of all-rounders and bits-and-pieces players, something which was also echoed by Kolkata Knight Riders’ batting all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer too.
So far, the impact player rule has been panning out on the lines Ponting had said as majority of teams have preferred to take the batter-bowler and bowler-batter swap. But former India left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha thinks the impact player rule won’t take away anyone’s value in teams.
"Not really, I feel everybody has a role to play. Impact player rule always adds value. It will never take away anybody else’s value in the team. If you see, we will have all-rounders. But you will have a specialist coming in to either bat or bowl."

Mumbai, April 16 ((Ians) Venkatesh Iyer became the first batter to score a hundred for Kolkata Knight Riders since Brendon McCullum in 2008, hitting a 51-ball 104 that helped them reach 185/6 in 20 overs in Match 22 of Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023, here on Sunday.

The victory also means that Mumbai have got their first points on the board in the competition while Delhi faced their fourth consecutive loss of the tournament. Axar Patel and David Warner slammed contrasting fifties in Delhi’s 172 in 19.4 overs, while Anrich Nortje and Mustafizur Rahman were brilliant in their death overs bowling. But Tim David took Mumbai home on the last ball with Cameron Green giving him company.
Compared to Delhi’s 29/0, Mumbai had a blazing start by reaching 42/0 in their three overs. Rohit was at his vintage best, timing the ball well and picking the lengths very quickly in hitting two fours and a six in a 14-run opening over.
On the other hand, Ishan Kishan hit the ground running by smacking three boundaries through the off-side against Mustafizur. Nortje was smacked for two fours and a six, which Rohit elegantly whipped over wide long-on.

Delhi were in trouble at 98/5 in 12.3 overs, and Axar walked in to smack 54 off 25 balls, hitting four fours and five effortless sixes in what was his first Ipl fifty. Warner began well but struggled to accelerate and played an anchor role to make an unconvincing 51 off 47 balls.
Mumbai’s bowling struggled in power-play, but veteran leg-spinner Piyush Chawla got turn from a dry pitch to pick 3/22, while left-arm pacer Jason Behrendorff finished with 3/23 as Delhi’s last five wickets fell for just seven runs, with two balls left unused.
Pushed into batting first, Delhi were off to a decent start by racing to 29/0 in the first three overs. Shaw got off the mark by presenting the full face of the bat to punch-drive down the ground off Behrendorff. He would time two more flowy drives off Arshad Khan and Hrithik Shokeen, but Shaw would fall to the latter after sweeping straight to square leg.

Mumbai, April 8 (Ians) Mumbai Indians’ batting woes continued at home as they succumbed to some disciplined bowling led by Chennai Super Kings’ spinners Ravindra Jadeja (3-20) and Mitchell Santner (2-28) as they could only manage a modest 157/8 in 20 overs in an Ipl 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium, here on Saturday.
The fans had turned in huge numbers to watch the home team return to winning ways after suffering an eight-wicket defeat in their opening match to Rcb. But it seems they will have to wait for some more matches to see that the score looks difficult to defend unless Csk make a hash of this easy chase.

Navi Mumbai, Feb 26 (Ians) The Reliance 1 side, through complete all-round performances, with almost every player stepping up at different stages of the tournament and performing just when it mattered, emerged as winners of the 17th Dy Patil T20 Cup with a thrilling one-run victory in the final over Dy Patil B team here.
The final was a proper thriller. All-rounder Hrithik Shokeen was once again impressive with a fifty, but Reliance 1 ended up with nothing more than just a par score of 153, getting bowled out inside their 20 overs at the D.Y Patil Stadium.
But all their bowlers were absolutely clinical with their performance, constantly keeping up the pressure all through the innings. Akash Madhwal was entrusted with the final over. He had six runs to defend.
Baltej Singh took a single off the first ball, and his partner, Jayesh Pokhara, smashed a boundary off the next. The equation suddenly...
