Macklemore spoke at length about the very personal inspiration behind "Same Love," his platinum-selling marriage equality anthem with Ryan Lewis in a new interview with Angie Martinez and Peter Rosenberg on NYC's Hot 97.
Saying his four "hella gay" uncles were an influence, Macklemore recalled, "I think that looking at the hip-hop community, and holding myself accountable in the hip-hop community, was what I cared about. That's my community; that's who I see to be oppressing gay people...Homophobia is still rampant in the hip-hop community and it just gets the co-sign."
Still, he says he believes the tides are turning as far as the hip-hop world's stance on the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (Lgbt) community is concerned: "The last year has gotten a lot better, but for so long, it was just an issue that nobody touched on."
Despite its success, "Same Love" has been met with a fair...

A Seattle-based hip-hop star is speaking out after a Michigan teacher was suspended for playing his gay-inclusive song in class.
In a Nov. 29 blog on his website, Macklemore called the suspension of Centennial Middle School teacher Susan Johnson "completely out of line and unjust." Johnson had allowed a student to play Macklemore's "Same Love," which contains lyrics like "I might not be the same, but that's not important/No freedom 'til we're equal, damn right I support it," in class.
Macklemore noted:
"This incident is just one of tens of thousands that have happened across the country where schools have exposed a latent homophobia, preventing safe space for all young people to feel confident in being themselves. It’s clear that Ms. Johnson felt bullying and 'gay bashing' were issues that needed to be addressed, and by doing so, was punished."

Warner Bros has sent over a new clip and images for Arthur, which is out this week on Triple Play Blu-ray, DVD and digital download.
It's a remake of the 1981 classic, which starred Dudley Moore, John Gielgud, Liza Minnelli and Jill Eikenberry.
This new version sees Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Greta Gerwig and Jennifer Garner step into those roles.
Superhero fans will know that one sequence features Brand's character and his chauffeur dressed as Batman and Robin and speeding through the streets of New York in the Batmobile.
The tagline of the film asks: 'Would you give up a billion, for one in a million?' Brand plays Arthur Bach, an irresponsible, wealthy charmer who has always relied on two things to get by - his limitless fortune and the good sense of his lifelong nanny and best friend Hobson (Mirren) to keep him out of trouble.

Love him or hate him, Russell Brand has well and truly transitioned into acting as today’s Blu-ray release of Arthur well and truly reminds us! Read on for our review…
Arthur Bach (Russell Brand) is an irresponsible charmer who has a tendency to drink far too much. Wiling away his days in a pool of alcohol and frivolous behaviour supported by a generous allowance, Arthur gets a nasty shock when his unfriendly mother, Vivienne (Geraldine James), declares that he is to be cut off should he not settle down and marry the woman of her choice, Susan Johnson (Jennifer Garner). As Arthur turns his attentions to the advice of his former nanny and permanent housekeeper, Hobson (Helen Mirren), he unexpectedly bumps into the beautiful and free spirited Naomi (Greta Gerwig). Arthur finds himself facing his biggest challenge: choosing between the arranged marriage, or an uncertain, probably penniless future with...

When news hit that Arthur was being remade, many fans were irritated to say the least, myself included. Not only a classic, it's a film of an age, and one long gone. No one is drunk like Dudley Moore, no one could match his wild charm, and it's hard to imagine a positive reaction to the outlandish excesses of the insanely wealthy right now.
Russell Brand's Arthur is a very different fellow though, and apart from the wealth issue, the film manages to sidestep most of the problems it faces.
Brand has his own charm, and his own treatment of the scamp billionaire works well. He doesn't need to deliver in quite the same way, overcoming the fact that we're watching a drunk, because while he might act like he's got a slight hangover at times, and is seeing drinking almost non-stop, he never acts drunk.

Chicago – Have we reached such a politically-correct place in our culture that drinking excessively can’t be seen as humorous even in a dumb comedy? How else to explain the boneheaded decision to basically make the legendary character of Arthur Bach (played by Dudley Moore in the Oscar-winning original and Russell Brand in the potential-Razzie-winning remake) into a man-child instead of an actual drunk? That decision (along with a few others) sunk “Arthur,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, before it even shot a frame. Although the actual production didn’t help.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
Arthur (Brand) still drinks but one can barely tell the difference between when he’s drunk and when he’s just being an immature goof. His loyal nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren) berates and belittles the buffoon, but, of course, she really loves him. On the other hand, his mother (Geraldine James) has had just about enough...

Following his success in J.J. Abrams' sci-fi flick "Super 8", Joel Courtney could land more adventurous roles in new films. The young star is said in negotiations for two forthcoming movies, "Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn" and "The Healer".
Variety reports that the 15-year-old thespian will tackle the role of Tom Sawyer in "Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn". Based on a classic novel written by Mark Twain, this movie will be directed by Jo Kastner. The shooting will be kicked off in August in Bulgaria, which is "the one place in the world that looks exactly like 1850's Missouri."
Meanwhile, Courtney will take the role of one of the two kids in "The Healer". Directed and written by Giorgio Serafini, the upcoming flick will tell a story of "an ailing father who takes his two teenage kids into the woods to renew the bond they shared before a divorce.

Joel Courtney made his acting debut in J.J. Abrams' Super 8, and is now in negotiations for two independent films, Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn and The Healer. He really did a wonderful job in the lead role opposite Elle Fanning in the Super 8 so I am interested in seeing how far his range can go.
Variety reports, that Jo Kastner is writing and directing the adaptation of Mark Twain's classic story, in which Courtney is set to play Tom Sawyer, "a mischievous troublemaker in search of endless adventures in 1850s Missouri." The film will be produced by Kastner and Marcus Weinhart, which is scheduled to shoot this August in Bulgaria. That makes no sense for something that is supposed to take place in my home state of Missouri!?
After that wraps, Courtney will move on to star in The Healer, which will be written and directed by...

I'm going to start off this review with a confession. I have never seen the original Arthur (starring Dudley Moore). This remake features Russell Brand as the titular character, Arthur Bach, basically playing himself. He's aloof, a bit (a lot) of a cad, a near enough alcoholic and endlessly charming. I've never been a particularly big fan of Brand's. Yet he's been in a few films of late and done voiceover work in animations, but I wasn't aware that he could act. It was a pleasant surprise!
We meet Arthur on the evening of a very important benefit party that his business empire-owning mother is hosting. He's dressed as Batman and he has a Batmobile. This tells you everything you need to know about Arthur. He's clearly not one for responsibility and is living life to the full extent of his considerable wealth. And it's quite considerable. Vivian Bach (Geraldine James...

Russell Brand steps into the shoes of Dudley Moore in a new take on the movie Arthur. But is this the comedy breakthrough movie he's been waiting for? Here's Ron's review...
Arthur Bach (Russell Brand) is a billionaire socialite who lives to have fun and squander as much of his mother's money as possible. To that end, he's very successful, and he's amassed enough notches on his bedpost to reduce even the largest California king-sized bed to nothing but slivers.
Arthur's got one problem: he's never had to grow up. He's an embarrassment to the family corporation, he's an embarrassment to his mother and family, and he's squandering his considerable wealth and intelligence on a life of drunken debauchery. Arthur is like Paris Hilton, but with charm, no sex tapes, and no felony convictions.
The gravy train is about to end. Arthur's mother, Vivienne (Geraldine James), has given him an ultimatum.

Arthur is more fun and amusing than actually laugh-out-loud funny. Russell Brand delivers jokes non-stop for about 90 percent of the film and he's always right on the mark.
Brand is charming as the drunk Arthur, who acts and sounds like a five-year-old child, not a grown man. He is known for playing outlandishly silly characters and has pretty much hit the same mark with his performance as Arthur.
The Plot:
Arthur is a billionaire who is heir to a corporate empire. He isn't taken seriously by his family as he acts like a spoiled child and doesn't offer anything to the business. He spends most of his time throwing away money and getting into mischief, along with his nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren), who must clean up the mess.

There have been several comedies released in 2011, each noble in their own endeavors. The Green Hornet, for instance, wrapped comedy around a superhero action flick. And who could forget Just Go With It, which valiantly attempted to convince us that Jennifer Aniston was homely. There was also Hall Pass, which bravely tried to convince us that the Farrelly Brothers were still relevant, while Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son indomitably stretched our patience with Martin Lawrence in a gender-reversed fat suit beyond its snapping point.
But Arthur does something even more audacious. It goes for broke. This spirited little remake of an 80's Dudley Moore film fearlessly endeavors to be the first comedy of 2011 without a shred of comedic value. It is completely humorless! There's not a funny moment in the entire film. Arthur has the gritty audacity to entirely subvert the comedy genre by removing precisely what it is...

Russell Brand's remake is 'a sporadically charming riff,' critics say.

In the summer of 1981, legendary New York Times film critic Vincent Canby called "Arthur" a "terrifically engaging, high-spirited screwball comedy." The movie would go on to become the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year and nab four Oscar nominations, including one for its star, Dudley Moore.
Russell Brand's 2011 remake of the classic comedy is neither attracting the critical plaudits nor anticipating the boffo box office performance and awards season love of its predecessor. Which is not to say critics have found nothing to celebrate in this new "Arthur." Most reviewers have responded positively to Brand's performance. What they take issue with is the deviations the new movie has taken from the original — not so much in a storytelling sense, but in thematic and comedic ones. For those critiques and more,...

Warner Bros. have released two new featurettes for the for the remake of the classic 1981 Dudley Moore movie Arthur, which stars Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner and Greta Gerwig.
In this fresh new look at a classic story, Russell Brand reinvents the role of loveable billionaire Arthur Bach, an irresponsible charmer who has always relied on two things to get by: his limitless fortune and the good sense of his lifelong nanny and best friend Hobson (Helen Mirren), to keep him out of trouble.
Kind-hearted, fun-loving, and utterly without purpose, Arthur spends every day in the heedless pursuit of amusement. But when his unpredictable public image threatens the staid reputation of the family foundation, Bach Worldwide, he is given an ultimatum: marry the beautiful but decidedly unlovable Susan Johnson (Jennifer Garner), an ambitious corporate exec who can keep him in line, or say goodbye to his billion-dollar inheritance and...

Russell Brand.s charm eluded me, there I said it. Besides his comedic turn as a party boy rock star in 2008.s .Forgetting Sarah Marshall,. I could not quite understand his popularity.
So I was nervous upon hearing that Brand would step into the beloved role of Arthur Bach in the remake of the 1981 original memorably played by Dudley Moore. I.m happy to report now that Brand is a worthy successor. This is his most accessible role to date.
It did take me a while though to warm up to Brand.s performance. Let.s face it, the original version is still fresh in our memories. But once we met the cast of characters, I was ready to embrace this new take about the pampered rich boy from New York City.

Finally, after many exciting teaser images and much fanfare over the course of the past year, it's nice to get a good look at what "Arthur" has in store for us.
And, as expected, the trailer far exceeds our expectations. As leading man Russell Brand promised, there are many homages to Dudley Moore and the original film, but it's clear that this latest version is coming into its own as well. Everything that was great about the original -- the lovable rich drunk, his dour old sidekick, his easy-going fiance and spitfire love interest -- have been included and amplified for the trailer and that couldn't make us happier. And there are "Star Wars" and "Batman" references, so how can this go wrong?
Brand and Helen Mirren are as perfectly matched as Moore and John Gielgud were in the original, and maybe it's just that I'm a sucker for some...

Russell Brand stars in the revamp of the 1981 Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli starrer Arthur; a role that fits the actor perfectly. Vulture has pics of not only Brand running around in his underwear in New York, but also an angered Nick Nolte, Greta Gerwig and Helen Mirren. In the original film, Arthur followed a drunk playboy played by Dudley Moore, who is set to tie the knot with Susan Johnson (Jill Eikenberry) from a wealthy family. He unexpectedly falls for Linda Marolla, a working class woman (Liza Minnelli).

Not long ago photos popped up online of Russell Brand sporting a nipply Batman Costume, and the Batman Forever Batmobile was also photographed on the set of the film. Now new photos have leaked online showing us that the Back To The Future DeLorean is going to make an appearance in the film as well! It should be interesting to see what it is they are planning with these classic movie vehicles.

Some casting news and confirmations for the end of the week:
- The roles of Burt and Susan Johnson have been cast for Warner Bros.' Arthur remake: Variety reports the adequately gruff Nick Nolte will play the violent, millionaire father (originally portrayed by Stephen Elliott) who wants the title character to marry his daughter, as arranged; and that wealthy heiress will be played by Jennifer Garner (Jill Eikenberry's role in the original). The trade also confirms Greta Gerwig for the Liza Minnelli role. They all join Russell Brand, as Arthur, and Helen Mirren, as his valet.
- Another confirmation from Variety: Geoffrey Rush will indeed reprise his role as Capt. Barbossa in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, in which he'll reunite with Johnny Depp and few other returning cast members. Jerry Bruckheimer had acknowledged Rush's involvement a few months back, when the producer also confirmed Penelope Cruz for the film.
