Accra, March 21 (Ians) Former Brighton and Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has been named the new head coach of Ghana’s national football team.
The Ghana Football Association said at a ceremony in Kumasi, the country’s second-largest city, that Hughton would be in charge of the team until December 31 next year, reports Xinhua.
The former Black Stars technical director shared his excitement and said he hoped to lead the four-time African champions back to their glory days.
“To represent Ghana and the Black Stars as the head coach is something I am incredibly proud of. I’ll give everything to make the team as successful as possible,” said British-born Hughton, who is the son of a Ghanaian father, and also won 53 caps for Ireland.
The former Brighton manager was named last month as the replacement for Otto Addo, who resigned following Ghana’s group stage exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Even in silly season, the decision to consider Jose Enrique as an apparently legitimate short term option to bolster Newcastle’s defensive options was a particularly strange one. The player has had a disastrous time recently with Liverpool and he looks a shadow of the player who stood out in Newcastle’s first season back in the Premier League under Chris Hughton and Alan Pardew.
Ultimately, it turns out he’s not going to sign – apparently thanks to the Magpies’ reluctance to give him a long enough deal – and is now going to wait for his contract to run down. Beggars can be choosers, it seems.
But why were Newcastle even considering the deal? He’s not the same player as he once was and if Newcastle are looking for a longer term option for left-back, signing him would be a bad idea for all parties.

With talk in the media this weekend being about how decisions Newcastle United will make in the January transfer window ultimately being the key in deciding whether The Magpies stay up and avoid relegation this season… is an actual bigger decision for owner Mike Ashley than what players he should sign, being overshadowed?
Is in fact his biggest decision being whether Steve McClaren is the right man to steer his club to safety?
Ashley was unusually loyal to McClaren’s predecessor Alan Pardew. No matter how bad results got, no matter how loud the fan backlash was, no matter how close United looked on verge of oblivion with another relegation – he stood by his manager until that man eventually jumped ship for pastures new. Previous to that, Ashley wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger if things weren’t going well… Sam Allardyce famously lasting less...

The early season pace setters Chelsea find themselves at home this week to a Norwich side that has struggled to overcome the turbulent departure of former manager Paul Lambert over the summer. Last week saw them on the end of a 5-2 thumping at home to Liverpool, and with arguably a better team in store for them this week, it could be damage limitation for Chris Hughton’s men. That approach to the game will look particularly attractive for Canaries fans when you take into consideration that Norwich have now conceded in 36 consecutive away games in the Premier League.
Chelsea on the other hand come off the back of an unconvincing win in the Champions League midweek, which despite their performance still saw them run out 4-0 winners. The early signs look good for the new look Chelsea side under Roberto Di Matteo’s leadership,...

Well it’s that time of year again and for the football fans out there it couldn’t come quick enough. Seeing Andy Murray make the Wimbledon final and then witnessing the Olympic extravaganza in London was a nice distraction but that’s all it was. Something to help the football withdrawal symptoms we were all going through. This summer had some nice filling but it was just a prelude to the main event. Now that we have the curtain raising Community Shield and the ridiculously timed International friendlies out of the way it is clear sailing to the start of the Premier League campaign.
It’s time to get the scarf’s out of the closet. Time to proudly wear the money spinning new strip with the name of your clubs marquee new signing on it. Time to put Match Of The Day back on the Sky+ despite Mark Lawrenson.
