Indian tentpoles like “Rrr,” “Jawan” and “Pathaan” routinely get Imax releases in India, but not at the expense of Hollywood blockbusters. But when action star Salman Khan’s “Tiger 3” opens the weekend of Nov. 12 it will do just that. That means that Hollywood’s mid-November juggernauts “The Marvels” (opening Nov. 10) and “The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snake” (opening Nov. 17) will not have those premium auditoriums.
Instead, all 23 Imax theaters in India will be taken by “Tiger 3,” a Hindi-language action thriller starring Khan, who plays an Indian spy fighting a group of terrorists to clear his name.
“Indian tentpoles have been outperforming a lot of Hollywood blockbusters,” Jatinder Singh, an Indian box office expert and journalist, told TheWrap.
The Maneesh Sharma-directed “Tiger 3,” set in the same “Yrf Spy Universe” as “Pathaan” and the 2019 action hit “War,” is expected to continue a winning streak for Bollywood (Hindu-language) films.

Shah Rukh Khan just reclaimed his status as one of India’s biggest butts-in-seats draws after a four-year absence from movies.
Director Siddharth Anand’s action spectacular “Pathaan,” a loosely connected installment in India’s ongoing Yrf Spy Universe series, earned 77 million in its first week of global release. The immediate success both reaffirmed Khan’s bankability and provided a much-needed jolt to a struggling Bollywood industry.
Khan was a name synonymous with Bollywood in the 1990s and 2000s. However, as explained by film critic and pop culture journalist Siddhant Adlakha, he was known more as a romantic lead than as an action hero.
“The comparison is closer to Tom Cruise of the 1980s and 1990s,” argued Adlakha, “when he became a star through films like ‘The Firm’ and ‘Jerry Maguire,’ as opposed to the last two decades during which Cruise has primarily made action flicks like ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and the ‘Mission: Impossible’ sequels.

India may be slowly positioning itself as Hollywood’s next international target for a box office boost.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” has set another box office record in India with a 55 million-and-counting running total. The U.S. gross is still second behind “Avengers: Endgame” and its 62 million gross in 2019. However, it has earned more in Indian currency than the MCU sequel, making it the most successful Hollywood movie ever in India.
While James Cameron’s 3D sequel has rebounded in China, with 193 million-and-counting and a just-announced extension through the Lunar New Year on Jan. 22, it continues a pattern of Hollywood films earning far less than previously expected pre-covid in what is still the biggest overseas marketplace.

With 661 million worldwide as of Thursday, and a possible end-of-weekend cume over/under 900 million global, Walt Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “Avatar: The Way of Water” is on its way to potentially becoming the year’s biggest global grosser. However, with just 80 million from China in eight days from a 57 million opening weekend (including a 78 drop on its second Friday), according to individuals with knowledge, James Cameron’s underwater 3-D epic is the latest big Hollywood movie to stumble in China. It’s also the latest Hollywood tentpole, think “Top Gun: Maverick” (1.49 billion sans China) or “The Batman” (just 20 million out of 770 million from China), to earn top-tier global box office with almost no help from the Middle Kingdom.
There was an implicit hope that China might help make “Avatar 2” a hit there to continue the narrative that Hollywood could find fortune and glory in China. Covid-specific variables (which...

After a decade which saw Hollywood viewing Chinese box office as a path to fortune and glory, with a rapidly expanding marketplace providing a boost to overall grosses for their biggest franchise-friendly blockbusters, the last three years have seen a reversal of fortune which may leave China’s moviegoing industry struggling to justify its value to Tinseltown. Enter “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
James Cameron’s 3-D sequel just won approval for release on Dec. 16, the same day the sequel opens in most territories, including the U.S. The global success of the original “Avatar” — which earned a then-record 200 million when it opened in China in early 2010 (a 2021 re-release earned an additional 57 million) — helped convince Hollywood to focus on the Middle Kingdom as a growing movie market. However, Lightstorm and 20th Century Studios’ sequel is one of the last, best chances the superpower will have to show that Hollywood should...

Peacock made a big splash via its first appearance on last week’s Nielsen weekly ratings chart, placing first among all movies for the week of Oct. 16 with Universal’s “Halloween Ends” — and proof positive that a simultaneous release on streaming doesn’t automatically cannibalize theatrical revenue potential.
Nielsen reported that “Halloween Ends” achieved 717 million minutes viewed in the first three days of its availability on NBCUniversal’s Peacock. In the same weekend, the final film in the new Jamie Lee Curtis-led trilogy also topped the domestic box office, debuting with 40 million. The poorly-reviewed film, (with a 41 score on Rotten Tomatoes) maxed out at 65 million domestic when it left theaters last Thursday — and 103 million worldwide, on a 33 million budget.
“Horror movies are tailor-made for the communal movie theater experience,” Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian said. “Nonetheless, ‘Halloween Ends’ enjoyed solid results on the big screen and small screen simultaneously.
