China Box Office: ‘The Invisible Guest’ Opens on Top, While ‘Wonka’ Wilts and ‘Migration’ Misses Out
Two Hollywood films “Wonka” and “Migration” opened in Chinese cinemas over the latest weekend. But neither did enough business to appear among the box office top five.
Instead, the weekend crown went to “The Invisible Guest,” a Chinese remake of the 2016 Spanish mystery thriller about a woman who must work with a police officer to clear her name after her lover is found dead in a locked room. It earned a modest $12.6 million (RMB89.6 million), according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. (The original Spanish picture previously released in Chinese theaters in 2017.)
The remake, which rewrites the script to include a greedy cop trying to extort the alleged murderer, a courageous mother who has suffered at the hands of authority and the son of a prominent politician, is backed by streamer iQiyi and is directed by Chen Zhuo. It stars Greg Hsu, Janine Chang, Kara Wai and Zheng Yin.

This year's Nifff was quite intently focused on Asian cinema. It was not only the retrospective of Katsuhito Ishii, but also the Asian competition, with “Marry My Dead Body” receiving the Audience Award and the fact that Nuhash Humayun's “Foreigners Only” won both the Youth Award and the Audience Award for Best Short Film. Most of all, however, because “Tiger Stripes” was the winner of the Grant Award, the H.R. Giger “Narcisse” for Best Feature. Even UK-produced, “Raging Grace”, which won two awards, has Filipino Max Eigenmann as its protagonist.
Our coverage includes interviews with the person of honor (Ishii) along with the big winner Amanda Nell Eu and Anurag Kashyap, whose film “Kennedy” also screened.

In an effort to attract as much audience as possible, mainstream movies tend to include as many popular cinematic elements as possible, in a tactic that does not always work though. Cheng Wei-hao also implements this tactic in “Marry My Dead Body”, a film that combines comedy, ghost story, crime, action and romance while still managing to make a number of social comments. Let us see how the director fared, in this evidently difficult approach.
“Marry My Dead Body” is screening at Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival
Wu Ming-han is a wannabe super-cop, whose homophobia and ghost-phobia, however, frequently cause him trouble, which is how the story begins, as he nearly ruins an arrest, causing the anger of Tzu-ching, the colleague he is interested in, and ending up on garbage duty in the park. While retrieving evidence a drug dealer threw out the window during an over-the-top car chase, Ming-han...
