Summit Fever follows a group of friends, including Freddie Thorp, Michel Biel and Ryan Phillippe, as they begin their quest to climb the three most dangerous mountains in the Alps. Their friendship is tested as they search for a way out when a storm threatens their lives.
Thorp, who plays Michael, and director Julian Gilbey recently sat down for a conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers to discuss how they made the climbing scenes in their new film.

A few years ago there was a slew of great climbing documentaries making use of new technologies like GoPros and drones to show us aspects of mountaineering which had never been captured on screen before. This year has seen the focus shift to fiction. Again, there’s some good work out there, but the new films have quite a lot in common, and at first Julian Gilbey’s contribution seems to be ticking all the boxes. The protagonist is young and talented and was once highly ambitious but has taken a break from climbing following the death of a loved one (in this case a sister). Pressure from friends leads him to return, but he’s not sure he’s ready. An early accident reminds us what’s at stake. A storm brews.
We’ve seen all this before, but it doesn’t fit together in the usual way – it’s the same climb,...

To some people, mountains are impossibly remote places, the home of gods; to others, they are a sheltering bulwark against the worst of the weather. To still others, they are a challenge, their very existence inspiring an insatiable desire to get to the top. Michael (Freddie Thorp) had taken a break from climbing after the death of his sister, but is persuaded to return by the opportunity to take on three famous Alpine peaks: the Matterhorn, the Eiger and Mont Blanc. In the process he is drawn into a group of climbers who share his passion to varying degrees, not all of whom know where the edge is. Summit Fever is a film which traverses familiar territory by a route of its own making. When I met director Julian Gilbey, I asked him how it related to his own passion for the sport.

With seemingly-authentic mountaineering sequences, this is a visually resplendent film about peak-scaling – just don’t look down at the plot
There’s an eerie closeup in Summit Fever of hair rising on the wrist of lead character Michael (Freddie Thorp), prior to a lightning strike. Julian Gilbey’s mountaineering drama isn’t just visually resplendent, it also has an impressive tactile familiarity with its milieu – placing its actors on real rock faces on the Eiger, Matterhorn and Mont Blanc mountains – that results in super-authentic climbing sequences (at least to this non-climber). Too bad then that it fumbles its dramatic handholds with a risible sub-Point Break storyline about peak-scaling addiction.
Thorp plays a Keanu-esque newbie who has quit his finance job to chase the Chamonix dream. Egged on by his loudmouth climbing partner Jp (Michel Biel), Michael starts to push his limits on the region’s slopes, starting with the terrifyingly sheer Dent du Géant.

"His sponsors pushed him too hard, man… Demanding bigger, bolder, scarier routes." Saban Films has revealed the first official trailer for Summit Fever, yet another new mountain climbing movie from genre filmmaker Julian Gilbey. This is debuting directly on VOD to watch in October if anyone wants to check it out. A young climber spends a hedonistic summer in Chamonix near Mont Blanc whilst attempting to climb the world's deadliest trio of mountains. This one stars Freddie Thorp, Michel Biel, Mathilde Warnier, Hannah New, Théo Christine, and Ryan Phillippe. "Vanity" is indeed a deadly thing to bring into the mountains, but ironically a series of vane actors are playing these roles, which is literally bringing vanity into these mountains. Everything about this looks and feels so cheesy, I prefer the more authentic mountain movies like 14 Peaks or The Eight Mountains instead. Might still be a fun watch with some pizza and beer.

The film will tell the true story of Trish Weir (Breslin), who in 1963 was kidnapped and brutally raped by Ernesto Miranda. Committed to putting her assailant in prison, Trish’s life is destroyed by America’s legal system as she triggers a law that transforms the nation. It’s a second go around the alphabet of fear with The ABCs of Death 2. 2012′s first installment – an anthology of 26 stories, each representing a letter of the alphabet – was the very definition of a mixed bag, with (sadly) the bad often outweighing the good. However, given that the good was Very good I still held out hope that this sequel would live up to the expectations and potential that the format has.
Thankfully this time round the good outweighs the bad, although surprisingly there are some disappointing segments from directors whose work I’ve enjoyed; and whose feature work has been hailed as some of the best in the genre – not that there’s any evidence of that here – including...

The more I watch The ABCs Of Death 2, the more I love it. Seriously. I can’t get enough. This isn’t just another gimmicky horror anthology that throws some random short stories together in hopes of a cult following, but instead an intelligent collection of grim fables that *mostly* deliver death, destruction, and a heaping helping of mental unrest. The original film worked as a genre experiment, testing the waters of insanity to see if audiences would react favorably, but its sequel shows more confidence, creativity, and gusto when analyzing all the shorts as one marketable package. With twenty-six different segments, there’s bound to be some stinkers, but where The ABCs Of Death is a 50/50 mixed bag, The ABCs Of Death 2 showcases an impressive amount of successes compared to a few atrocious letters that are better left forgotten – but the ratio still demands an enthusiastic encore.

At the heart of the ABCs of Death series is something I absolutely cherish about horror cinema; the ability to take a short story and convey an idea that terrifies (or if we’re lucky grosses out). It strips out the bullshit ie all those love plots and pieces of character development that are wholly unnecessary to a good horror story. Horror shorts, anthology films and portmanteaus truly are my favorite way to watch horror fiction. From Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark to Stephen King’s Night Shift. From Dead of Night to Creepshow. Bite size stories to tell around a campfire or underneath the covers or to read on the beach, that’s the way to consume horror in small portions.

In ABCs of Death 2, 26 directors contributed a short film, each taking one letter from the alphabet as their inspiration. Nigerian director Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen brings us a supernatural tale that has historical roots in L is for Legacy, and he shared his thoughts on the subject matter and the practical makeup effects used to bring his beast to life:
“It was a true event in history and that legacy kept on. Someone was wrongly accused and the beast came out as the manifestation of the curse that was placed on the people. I chose this story because I like the idea of the supernatural having control over the physical. Somebody that was innocent was wrongly accused and whatever he pronounced became real. I’m a strong believer of the spiritual and that story resonated with me. If you are true and decent, the physical will work for you, no matter how misunderstood you are.

"This is my anti-death penalty film," director Julian Gilbey explains to Shock Till You Drop of his hard-hitting ABCs of Death 2 segment. Where some filmmakers took the opportunity to participated in the anthology horror film and craft a visceral experience that perhaps favors style of substance, Gilbey used his allotment of time that offers food for thought and goes for the throat.
It also features one of the nastiest on-screen beheadings we've seen in quite some time.
ABCs of Death 2 - currently on VOD - features 26 filmmakers musing on the nature of death, using the alphabet as their inspiration. Gilbey, who previously helmed A Lonely Place to Die, took on "C is for Capital Punishment."

For a film with shootouts, heists, and high-speed chases, Julian Gilbey's Plastic is a strangely lifeless affair. The crime pic, about undergraduate credit-card scammers who incur the wrath of a London gangster, checks off all the boxes — underdogs in trouble, beautiful girl used as a love and kidnap object, slow-motion climax — of an action movie from 1999, with as much originality as you would expect from a film made 15 years past its expiration date. Ed Speelers stars as Sam, the ringleader of four guys who support themselves with credit card fraud. (In an exposition-laden monologue, Sam explains that it began when he had to pay for his brother's medical bills — a crucial detail for creating sympathy, but the film isn't interested enough in character...

Three years ago, Julian Gilbey released A Lonely Place To Die, a hybrid of the Most Dangerous Game and Cliffhanger – and a highly inventive, action packed thriller chock full of and suspense. To create this truly relentless action film/gripping crime thriller, director Julian Gilbey spent years practicing to become an avid and experienced climber, in order shoot the film from impossible positions, situated in and around the Scottish mountainsides. Gilbey and cinematographer Ali Adas avoid CG and instead relied on their actors and stunt crew to do provide the thrills. Every frame of this film is in service of keeping the audience at the edge of their seats with it’s breathless nonstop pacing.
Plastic is the latest offering from Gilbey, and follows the fortunes of the young group of students who fall foul to a sadistic crime boss. They are given two weeks to raise £2 million – otherwise they must face the consequences.

With Fantastic Fest 2014 drawing closer by the day, the horror lover inside me is ready to burst out in a fit of obsessive jubilation knowing the onslaught of movies I’ll be experiencing. Movies like Tusk, V/H/S Viral, The Babadook, and so many others are ready to push my moral boundaries and chill me to the bone, but one project has me uniquely excited, and that’s The ABCs Of Death 2.
I rather like The ABCs Of Death and I’ve since made that pretty clear here at We Got This Covered, so after watching yesterday’s freshly released Red Band trailer for the equally ambitious sequel, I’m officially on pins and needles. Loaded with exploding heads, decapitations, brutality, and gigantic genitalia, this new crop of directors seems to be upping the ante wherever possible, which is expected from filmmakers like the Soska Sisters, Jerome Sable...

I really enjoyed the first ABCs of Death horror anthology film, and the sequel looks like it will be at least as equally insane. 26 short films directed by 26 talented directors make up the ABCs of Death 2 and those films are disgustingly brutal, disturbing, and very funny. Each film corresponds with a letter from the alphabet, and the directors had complete freedom to do what they wanted with the letter assigned. This first red-band trailer for the movie gives you a little taste of the complete madness that awaits horror fans.

The ABC’s Of Death was an ambitious horror anthology from 2012 consisting of 26 shorts from 26 different directors all of whom accepted the challenge of taking a single letter of the alphabet, picking a word that begins with that letter and then making a short film about death with that word at the core.
We have had anthologies with segments from different directorial hands before (the VHS films are a good example) but with 27 (the letter ‘O’ had two directors) you’d have expected the result to be unwieldy and inconsistent. And it was, yet the crazy concept mostly worked. I only recall a couple of duds, and since these films only lasted 3 or 4 minutes each, taking the bad with the good was painless. It will be interesting to see what they do with the sequel. It appears the format is identical with films from Nigeria to UK to Brazil and everywhere in between.

I don't know what to say, but this red band trailer for ABCs of Death 2 is doing nothing for me, it just looks cheap and uninspired, but perhaps I'm just in a bad mood because I think that's sort of the film's intention. The trailer is certainly gory and beyond what we most often get from a red band trailer, which is probably why it was labeled "extreme" in the email I received, but I guess I just don't see the humor in it, at least not as it's presented here in this trailer. The film brings together 26 directors for 26 different segments, all representing a letter of the alphabet and each director was given free reign as long as their segment was inspired by a word beginning with their respective letter and a story involving death. Said directors are Alejandro Brugues, Bill Plympton, Chris Nash, Dennison Ramalho, Erik Matti,...

Julian Gilbey, director of A Lonely Place to Die and a segment in ABCs of Death 2, has a new thriller coming out next month. Plastic opens in cinemas on September 12, and we have the key art and a gallery of images to share with you.
