At this year’s MipTV, The Wit hosted its first-ever presentation for a Fresh TV Lab, hosted by CEO and co-founder Virginia Mouseler and focused on Esports, podcasts and brands.
“Esports is a growing entertainment option, not only for younger people but with a wider and wider audience. Of course, Esports is primarily about online gaming and streaming platforms, but it’s not generating its own game show formats. Are they imitating TV, or should TV imitate them?” Mouseler asked.
Starting in Spain, the presentation kicked off with “Top Gamers Academy,” from “Operación Triunfo” producers Gestmusic, an Endemol Shine Iberia company. An early transmedia phenomenon, the show is broadcast on linear network Neox, streaming websites Twitch, YouTube and digital streaming platform Atresplayer, with Banijay handling distribution. Similar to one of Spain’s most popular reality formats of the last decade, “Operación Triunfo,” contestants on the program live together, train together...

Vurnon Anita believes there’s always been a “connection between Dutch people and Newcastle United” – and that part of the reason behind that is because Tyneside is “close to Holland”.
The 26-year-old’s geography may be questionable – although it’s likely he is referring to the fact it is easy to travel between Newcastle and Holland via ferry or plane – but his assertion that the Dutch have a strong connection with the Toon is an important one given the composition of Steve McClaren’s current squad.
Alongside Anita, Newcastle have four other Dutchmen on their playing staff – and the midfielder believes another reason behind the bond between Holland and Tyneside is due to the array of Oranje stars to have represented the Magpies down the years.

It’s an Alan Shearer level of ‘Staggering’ when you think of the miracle work Sir Bobby Robson did at Newcastle United.
He took over a team that was in disarray and turned them into world beaters. Ruud Gullit had taken a side that had previously beaten Barcelona in the Champions League under Kenny Dalglish and left it bottom of the Premier League.
Numerous high profile players had been neglected and left bewildered while a number of his signings simply weren’t up to standard.
All that, plus the fact he left captain Alan Shearer, who he didn’t get along with, on the bench for a miserable 1-2 reverse at home to Sunderland means it couldn’t have been any worse when Newcastle’s knight in shining armour came through the door.
Sir Bob took his time but his third season in charge saw United finish...

Newcastle United’s 1-0 loss at home to Manchester United may have frustrated Magpies fans – but the result had been of far less importance at St James’ Park that night then the return of one of their own.
Jonas Gutierrez took to the field in in 65th minute, replacing Ryan Taylor, to complete a remarkable comeback having twice been diagnosed with testicular cancer. The spine-tingling ovation and applause he was greeted to from a 50,000-strong crowd showed the extent to which the Argentine’s battle with the disease had captured the hearts of the Geordie faithful.
Yet his post-match comments confirmed something to which he had already alluded months earlier – that former Magpies boss Alan Pardew had told him to find another club during the height of his illness. Speaking to Spanish paper Marca, Gutierrez revealed: “He (Pardew) told me to look for a team a...

The tragedy of human existence is that we’re all destined to relive history over and over, regardless of how bad the mistakes or the disasters. At Newcastle United, the repetition comes a lot quicker.
Back in 1999/2000, Newcastle failed to win in their first seven games of the season, before finally winning against a team expected to be relegated. The team was being led by a man who seemed badly out of his depth, who had pushed out players he had personal problems with, and nobody was really scoring.
Fast forward to this season, and the exact same issues are being relived, only this time, the manager who over-saw the first 7 losses hasn’t had the good grace to walk away, as Ruud Gullit did in 1999. When the Dutchman did that, he paved the way for the triumphant arrival of Sir Bobby Robson who guided the...

Despite his repeated mantra that ten games is the point at which teams should be judged (he’s said it three times publicly in different seasons), Alan Pardew‘s Newcastle side are showing far too few signs of improvement. When 100% increase in ability and effort leads to a draw snatched away against the run of play (and largely thanks to only one player), something is fundamentally wrong with the whole set-up.
But Pardew endures and Mike Ashley remains frustratingly patient with his under-delivering coach despite seven games coming without a single league win. In truth, only one of the games so far has been a truly difficult one (City on the opening day), and the other six should have yielded more points than the four that have currently been amassed. Still though, Newcastle fans are told to remain patient – or worse castigated for having the audacity...

Unfortunately for Alan Pardew, not winning has a habit of breeding, and right now the team is standing on the edge of a record-equalling poor run to the start of any Premier League season. If a win doesn’t come against Swansea on Saturday, Pardew will have equalled the unwanted record of seven winless games from the 1999/00 season that saw the resignation of Ruud Gullit.
If Pardew wants to avoid emulating the Dutchman, he needs to address some significant problems with the way Newcastle are currently playing, and there are some players in his ranks who could be the key to changing his side’s form.
Pardew has spoken about creating big players and inspiring big performances in Newcastle’s next performances, and as the spectre of relegation looms large (enough for the manager to acknowledge the threat indirectly) there are seven players in...

Newcastle United have just announced their squad numbers for the coming season, and there are a couple of revelations that stick out from the updated list. First and foremost, Hatem Ben Arfa has lost his number 10 shirt to incoming attacking midfielder Siem De Jong, confirming not only that the player will likely take up a starting position behind a lone central striker, but also that Ben Arfa is probably on his way out.
It’s no great surprise that Ben Arfa has ben shifted down the pecking order – taking up Mathieu Debuchy’s vacant number 26 shirt – given the continued rumours that he is on the verge of being shifted out of the door, but it is somewhat strange that the player has been given a number at all. Precedent has suggested that such obviously unwanted players would be given no squad number at all – as Rob Lee...

Once upon a time Newcastle United weren’t afraid to spend money. Austerity didn’t really exist at St James’ Park before Mike Ashley dropped into town while financial planning was a mystery concept to ex-chairman Freddy Shepherd and chief note burners Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Ruud Gullit.
It was a strategy that proved more miss than hit over the years as the club would often fork out a kings ransom for a throughly average player and lumber itself with a financial burden on a lucrative five-year contract. Our roll call of extravagantly priced flops is so bad it’s impressive.
But among the masses of damp squibs that Toon supporters have had to grin and bear in the Premier League era there are 10 useless individuals that stand out from the crowd as our most costly transfer mistakes.

Manchester United will make three big signings in the January transfer window but could let striker Wayne Rooney leave, according to former Chelsea and Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit.
Speaking to the Express, Gullit claimed United would learn from their mistakes over the summer by strengthening their squad this winter.
The Premier League champions endured a miserable time of things in the last window, with midfielder Marouane Fellaini the only senior arrival at the club under new manager David Moyes.
And Gullit said:
“I can fully understand that Moyes has now asked the board to sanction the purchase of three top-class footballers in the winter to keep the team competing at the highest level in England and Europe.
“I have reason to believe that funds are being made available at United and they should because it is a necessity.”

The game kicked off with a wall of noise echoing around the Metalist Stadium, as it seemed the fans of each of these historically rich nations were having a competition of their own.
The first chance of the game came in the sixth minute, when a delightfully floated ball was played over the German defence into the path of that man Robin Van Persie, but, in what seems to be becoming a trend at Euro 2012, he put it straight in to the keepers arms. The Germans had their first chance a couple of minutes later when a headed clearance fell kindly to Ozil who struck it on the volley, clipping the post before landing nicely in to the goalkeepers hands. Holland were moving the ball better and keeping possession when they had it, unlike the Germans who barely strung two passes together in the first ten minutes. The nervousness of...

Rafael Benitez, Michael Laudrup, Andre Villas-Boas, Fabio Capello, Roy Keane, Ralf Rangnick, Alex McLeish and Juan Carlos Garrido. That is just a short list of experienced managers who are currently unemployed. Not for a second do I think that all of them would be available to a club with the financial constraints of West Brom.
With Chris Hughton taking the Norwich job, Steve Bruce going to Hull and Roberto Martinez’s loyalty to Dave Whelan making a mockery of all other manger – chairman relationships. Where exactly were West Brom supposed to look for a new manager?
“From the outset, we decided to pursue candidates who are renowned for their coaching ability and Steve was very much at the forefront of our thoughts because of the clubs he has worked at and the high regard he is held in within the game”.
Dan Ashworth, West Brom Technical Director, said that to the West Brom website.
