I love Joe Dante. He has directed some hugely entertaining films and is an aficionado of the same genres I adore. Additionally, like most film directors, he is highly versed in cinemaspeak. My introduction to his work came in 1983 when I bought his werewolf classic The Howling (1981) sight-unseen on RCA’s now extinct Ced system and immediately took to it. That failed stylus-based videodisc format was severely limited to only several thousand titles, so I had to rely on VHS to catch up with his Hollywood Boulevard (1976), Piranha (1978), and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979) in the mid-80’s following theatrical viewings of Twilight Zone: The Movie in 1983 and Gremlins in 1984.
