The best dance music knows how to take pain and set it to a disco groove. Dua Lipa’s “Hotter than Hell” has a fun title but it came from some dark places. For example, the “Cold Heart” singer revealed that “Hotter than Hell” was inspired by a man who put her down constantly. Lipa wrote the song in question to make the situation seem different than reality.
Dua Lipa didn’t want ‘Hotter than Hell’ to show her personal weakness
Lipa might make colorful, vibrant music videos, but her tunes deal with negative emotions. Songs like “New Rules,” “Break My Heart,” and “Cold Heart” have an emotional tension that you won’t find in your average dance track from Madonna or Katy Perry. During a 2017 interview with The New York Times, the star explained her approach to songwriting. “Heartbreak makes good stories, so sometimes, as much as heartbreak sucks,...

From Thursday through Saturday last week, 775,000 fans crowded into downtown Detroit for the 2024 NFL draft, setting a new attendance record for the event in the process. Football took center stage, but music was very much along for the ride, as Detroit’s rock and hip-hop royalty rubbed elbows with its sports legends, in some cases literally. Detroit Lions superfan Eminem, who’s also been known to rap a bit, joined NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell onstage to open the draft on Thursday night, while Lions legend Barry Sanders hung out with Bob Seger and Big Sean,...

Beyoncé just made history when she took home the Grammy for best dance/electronic music album for "Renaissance," netting her 32nd Grammy - the most of any artist ever. From the start, Beyoncé's "Renaissance" era has been a celebration of house music, beginning with its lead single, "Break My Soul," which was released in June 2022.
"Break My Soul" features a sample of Robin S.'s house hit "Show Me Love." Before she was sampled on the song, Robin S. was a major hitmaker in the house-music world. Her 1993 track "Show Me Love" was a hit in the early '90s, and her singles "Luv 4 Luv" and "What I Do Best" also topped the charts and helped establish the house genre around the world.

Artists like Beyoncé, Harry Styles, Adele, Lizzo, and more received nominations for Record of the Year. Here are our predictions for the 2023 Grammy Awards — and the winner in this category.
Who is nominated for Record of the Year at the 2023 Grammy Awards Harry Styles accepts the Best Pop Solo Performance award for ‘Watermelon Sugar’ during the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards | Kevin Winter/Getty Images for The Recording Academy
As one of the biggest categories at the 2023 Grammy Awards, several well-known artists earned nods in the Record of the Year category. This category shares similar nominees to Song of the Year.
However, as noted on the Grammy’s website, Record of the Year is awarded to “the Artist and to the Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s) and/or Mixer(s) and mastering engineer(s), if other than the artist.”
That means this category specifically recognizes the recording and technical aspects behind an original.

Beyoncé’s Renaissance album almost never made it to the dance floor — at the Grammys.
Beyoncé submitted the critically acclaimed album for best dance/electronica album at the 2023 Grammys, but the Recording Academy’s dance committee initially felt that it might not be a perfect fit for the genre, according to a source. That group believed that the album might be better placed in pop, where it would be nominated for best pop vocal album alongside projects by Adele, Harry Styles, Lizzo and more.
The debate landed in the hands of the academy’s National Screening Committee — a group of music industry experts including songwriters, producers, musicologists and more — who listened to Renaissance several times to determine where it should compete. That group — which also selects which artists are eligible for best new artist — eventually decided that Beyoncé’s project should be in contention in dance.

Beyoncé knows the world needs a reason to rejoice right now. With an ongoing pandemic, polarizing politics, an uptick in senseless violence, and the impending global climate crisis, we're overwhelmed. "Renaissance" couldn't have arrived at a better time.
"My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment . . . A place to scream, release, feel freedom."
Beyoncé's seventh solo album, act one of a three-part series, arrives six years after she bared her soul on 2016's "Lemonade." Much like her previous offering, "Renaissance" marks a new era in Beyoncé's evolution - one leading with freedom, confidence, and pure, unadulterated fun. The 28-time Grammy-winning icon has been known to boldly experiment with many genres - pop, blues, and country are just some of her favorites - and "Renaissance" is every bit as daring as it is revolutionary. It pushes to the forefront the music of the ballroom, late-'70s disco-funk era,...

Every year, June marks the nationwide celebration of Black Music Appreciation Month - a time to commemorate, appreciate, and get educated on all of Black artists' contributions to the nation's music landscape. Black Music Month - a concept pioneered by cofounders Kenny Gamble and Dyana Williams - was officially established by former President Jimmy Carter in 1979. Since then, the month-long remembrance has grown to be a major staple in the culture observed by artists all over.
"Music is universal, it's inclusive, it's colorful, and it's all that energy that we need to feel."
"Kenny, Cleveland radio DJ Ed Wright, and myself wanted to advocate a period of time to celebrate all those involved in the creation and promotion of Black music," Williams told Billboard in 2015. Gamble added: "We picked June as the time when we could concentrate on recognizing and celebrating the economic and cultural power of Black music as...

Hardwell has unveiled a new remix over the weekend during the latest episode of his regular radio show Hardwell On Air, dropping a re-imagining of Steve Angello and Laidback Luke’s classic “Show Me Love” with Robin S.
Hardwell’s remix opens with the familiar organ melody and massive vocal hooks from the original version, but the Dutch producer crafts a high octane big room beat underneath to give the tune a more contemporary edge. The new rework opts for a restrained arrangement, allowing the percussion to gradually build up and repeat in a linear fashion. The original tune’s identity is maintained while the production is given a fresh revamp, making for a dancefloor ready update.
For long time fans, Hardwell’s new “Show Me Love” rework should come as no surprise, as a bootleg from 2009 served as the blueprint for what would go on to become a dance music classic.

If you’ve turned on the radio in the last few months and had a major case of déjà vu, you’re not alone. While it could be that you’re hearing Katy Perry’s “E.T.” for the fourth time in an hour, it could also be due to a rising trend in pop music: the borrowed melody. Many artists are taking a cue from Vanilla Ice (who’s iconic song “Ice Ice Baby” features the bass line of Queen’s “Under Pressure”) and starting to take old melodies, alter them or add new lyrics, and incorporate them into their singles. The end result? A jam that is somehow familiar, new and exciting – and an instant hit.

"DJ Hero 2" has entered the last leg of its path toward an October 19 release date, and though they've revealed 105 tracks that will appear featuring talent like DJ Qbert and DJ Shadow, FreeStyleGames had not yet named what the sequel's mix list would include. That's all changed now, however, and they've even grouped the combos and re-styled singles by producer.
"Whether it's Pussycat Dolls Mixed With Pitbull, 2Pac Mixed With B.o.B., or a all-new remix of a Daft Punk anthem, in 'DJ Hero 2' we have created 83 mixes that are not only incredibly fun to play, but will allow everyone to experience the music they know and love in an all-new way," FreeStyleGames music director Dan Neil said in a press release. "The amazing soundtrack, coupled with the new social gameplay modes and all-new levels of creative freedom, make 'DJ Hero 2' the ultimate interactive music experience."
