Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.
“Instead of subscriber growth at all costs, now the focus is on production and investment and getting the balance sheet right,” says Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the sales arm of the production giant behind reality TV hits Big Brother and high-end dramas Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. “I hate using the phrase because everyone says it, but the focus now is on ‘fewer, better, bigger shows.’ ”
The variety of shows on offer at this year’s global TV market in Cannes, MIPCOM, suggests every buyer, at every budget, should find something to fill their slots. And while THR’s annual hot list of the market’s best new drama series ranges from a by-the-book NBC procedural to an erotic comedy...

Exclusive: Another Round star Maria Bonnevie is leading Viaplay’s latest Norwegian original, a comedy-drama inspired by award-winning director Bård Breien’s unusual childhood.
In the Name of Love is set in 1970s Norway, where a primary school teacher, played by Bonnevie, does everything to keep her husband Lars’ (Trond Espen Seim) highly profitable porn business secret. Lars sees his line of work as an act of social protest, however, and their two sons, played by real-life brothers Jakob and Jonas Oftebro, are caught in the middle – until a family confrontation becomes inevitable.
Bonnevie starred opposite Mads Mikkelsen in Thomas Vinterberg’s Academy Award-nominated Another Round.
The show is the latest in a long line of Nordic streamer Viaplay’s originals, with 70 set to premiere this year. Deadline revealed Norwegian feature Listen Up! starring People Just do Nothing’s Asim Chaudhry in June.

Robert Bogerud (Svein André Hofsø) is a rather unique detective. Of course he has the typical hat and trench coat favored by private eyes past, he places ads in local papers as detectives are wont to do, and like many of his brethren he specializes in missing persons cases. He’s also never had a case, missing person or otherwise. What makes him unique though is the very same reason he’s never actually been hired. Robert has Down Syndrome and lives in a group home. When a distraught woman appears in his “office” requesting his help even he’s dumbfounded. ”But,” he says matter of factly, thinking perhaps she’s somehow missed the obvious, “I’ve got Down Syndrome.” Undeterred, Rita Starr hires him to find her missing husband, a former Olympic champion named Olav. The two head off to Starr’s estate with the cheers of Robert’s fellow residents bringing a smile and a...

The day began as all days should probably begin: with a sold-out crowd taking shots of Jack Daniels to ward off the cat flu. The day ended as all days should close: with an exceptionally lively and entertaining martial-arts film made by a group of passionate people who know how to kick ass. Yes, Day Two of Fantastic Fest 2013 was a predictably unpredictable and wild ride. It is, perhaps, fitting that spending the entire day–by which I mean 13-plus hours–at the Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline reminded me very much of the vacations I’ve spent with my wife at the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts. No, there were no costumed characters, no meet-and-greets with beloved cult movie figures, or literal attractions. But Day Two was one of those days where I realized how much I had done over the course of just one day. It’s hard to...

Crossing lines of good taste and political correctness with glee, Bård Breien's Detective Downs delivers exactly what it promises on the tin: A noir tinged comedy about a private eye with Downs Syndrome as played by a lead actor who really has Downs Syndrome. Whether this is a joke that should be made at all is very much open to discussion but Breien has made it and the results are set for their world premiere at Austin's Fantastic Fest.Robert runs his own detective office, but he never gets any cases. No one believes Robert can accomplish anything and even his father, who is a police investigator, rejects Robert. One morning a mysterious woman appears in Robert's office. The legendary speed skater Olav Starr is missing,...
