Senior Year is one of Netflix’s hottest and most popular originals this year. The movie features a hilariously unique storyline and an ensemble cast to boot, which explain why it’s one of the most popular streaming films in 2022. Senior Year was directed by Alex Hardcastle, whom most people recognize for his work on The Mindy Project, The Office, Grace & Frankie, Parks and Recreation, and A Young Doctor’s Notebook. The movie tells the story of a formerly popular cheerleader who aims to redeem her high school glory after being in a coma for years. The movie was critically panned by critics,

Spare parts of high school comedies from “Peggy Sue Got Married” to “Mean Girls” and beyond have been torn asunder, then sewn back together to create “Senior Year.” In other words, this vehicle for producer-star Rebel Wilson isn’t organic even as a genre homage; its Frankensteinian assemblage always feels more imitative than inspired. Nonetheless, if Alex Hardcastle’s effortfully high-spirited Netflix feature isn’t exactly good, it’s still .

It stands to reason that Stephanie Conway, the Aussie outcast at the center of Alex Hardcastle’s “Senior Year” would have seen “Never Been Kissed.” Released in 1999 — almost exactly when Hardcastle’s film starts — Drew Barrymore’s high school rom-com followed a well-meaning, dorky kid as she embarks on a do-over after a humiliating teen experience. Such is also the case in “Senior Year,” which

A miscast lead is one of many issues plaguing a broad and unfunny attempt to recapture the spirit of films like Never Been Kissed and Mean Girls
The spirit of sparky high school comedies, from Never Been Kissed to Mean Girls to Easy A, haunts Netflix’s junky “if you like…” offering Senior Year, with a progressively deafening reminder of what came before. For where those films had charm, wit and vim, this has a stultifying absence instead, a disappointing and derivative two-hour slog down memory lane.
It at least looks like the movies it desperately wants to be grouped together with, a quick tip-off to its origins, made by Paramount before being off-loaded to Netflix. British director Alex Hardcastle, best known for sitcom work, does an impressive job of fooling us into thinking we’re in safe hands with a slick and poppy aesthetic before the script, from Andrew Knauer,...

Rebel Wilson is going back to high school. Or at least, she’s going back to her senior year in Netflix’s upcoming comedy.
Apparently, Wilson’s character — or at least, her teenage self — had a pretty great life. She was cheer captain, was dating the hottest guy in school and was on track to become prom queen. But, after a bad accident during a cheer routine, she ends up in a coma for 20 years.
When she wakes up, she must cope with everything being different — well, except for her room. Apparently her parents couldn’t bear to change anything while she was comatose, meaning her bedroom walls are still covered in relics from 2002..

The news comes a year after Lennon was cast in the Fox comedy pilot “Dan the Weatherman.” That pilot was said to be well-received at the network with Lennon in particular earning considerable praise. Fox decided to redevelop it as a possible midseason show before ultimately passing on it in December. Lennon is perhaps...

“American Woman” will not be returning for a second season, the Paramount Network announced Wednesday.
The series starred “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone as a mother navigating the 1970s sexual revolution. Mena Suvari and Jennifer Bartels also starred in the 12-episode first season. While the John Riggi-created series started off strong, it did not maintain high enough ratings to merit a sophomore run.
The cast also included Makenna James, Lia McHugh, Cheyenne Jackson and James Tupper. John Wells, John Riggi and Alex Hardcastle served as executive producers.

Though the rewards are great when it’s done well, period TV is difficult to pull off. For every “The Crown” or “The Americans,” shows that milk tension and drama out of their movement into a future we all know is coming, there are several less-well-remembered series that couldn’t make that leap. (Several of them premiered in the wake of “Mad Men.”) When we’re familiar not just with the setting but with what comes next for characters, seasons’ worth of investment through the infinitesimal movement of history can be a big ask. And the temptation to substitute easy cultural references for meaningful insight about the era is a big one.
That’s a problem facing “American Woman,” Paramount Network’s new comedy-drama hybrid set in the 1970s. The show, notionally based on the early life of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Kyle Richards, positions her as...

While dramatic television has seen a wave of directorial ingenuity over the last 17 years (see our list of the best-directed dramas for proof), 21st century TV will probably be remembered more for the growth of vision in the comedy genre. What was once a format dominated by multi-cam sitcoms with live studio audiences has become the most auteur-driven genre on television, and the results have been some of the most creative and personal series the small screen has ever aired.

Back in the Game, Season 1, Episode 2, “Stay In or Bail Out”
Directed by Eric Appel
Written by Warren Lieberstein
Airs Wednesdays at 8:30pm Est on ABC
Following its awkward pilot last week, Back in the Game continues to struggle with establishing the format of the show. Although “Stay In or Bail Out” successfully moves the characters forward, it fails to show the audience how the show will operate each week. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just means the audience can’t fully decide whether the show is worth investing time in yet.
Back in the Game has a very interesting premise, and with two polar opposites working together, the show should provide some laughs, but at the moment this is something it’s failing to do. Although the show appears to be about kids playing baseball, Back in the Game actually focuses on a strong female...

Suburgatory, Ep 2.20 “Go, Gamblers!”
Written By Matt Ward
Directed By: Alex Hardcastle
Airs Wednesdays at 8:30pm Et on ABC
With only a few episodes left in the sophomore season, Suburgatory just aired one of its most mature episodes and managed to both wrap up certainly story lines and set the stage for a great run to the end of the season. The Altman’s are dealing some big relationship moves, chief of which is George and Dallas moving in together. This would be a big deal in any relationship, but especially with these two it becomes even more challenging. The discussion they had at the beginning of the episode regarding moving in to consolidate was a really powerful, if hilarious, conversation and led to George deciding to use Mrs. Shay as his realtor. The entire moving in plot line might have been worth it just to see the gag of Mrs.

Starring Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe in the leads, the anticipated mini-series, A Young Doctor’s Notebook, stars airing here in the UK early next month, and after a handful of great first-look images last week, Sky have debuted the first trailer for the programme.
The four-part mini-series will be airing on Sky Arts 1 (and Sky Arts 1 HD) from 6th December, and when you have the likes of Hamm and Radcliffe front and centre of a programme, the odds are pretty good it’s going to be a success.
“A Young Doctor’s Notebook is a four-part comedy drama based on a collection of short stories by the celebrated Russian writer and playwright Mikhail Bulgakov. The drama recounts Bulgakov’s semi-autobiographical experiences as a young doctor working in the small village of Muryovo at the dawn of the Russian Revolution in 1917.

Starring Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe, A Young Doctor’s Notebook is sure to give Sky a big ratings boost when it airs in the UK early next month. Hamm is of course well known for his unparalleled performance as Don Draper in AMC’s Mad Men, and Radcliffe is diversifying his credits nicely following the end of Harry Potter.
The four-part mini-series will be airing on Sky Arts 1 (and Sky Arts 1 HD) in early December, and now the first images from the series have been released. We can’t wait to see how Hamm and Radcliffe interact on the small screen.

It's been a rocky road for NBC's 100 Questions and now the journey is over. The sitcom has been cancelled after one season and six episodes.
100 Questions follows Charlotte Payne (Sophie Winkleman), a young woman who's looking for love. She goes to a dating service and answers 100 questions as posed by a frustrated consultant named Andrew (Michael Benjamin Washington). While trying to figure out what she's looking for in a mate, she recounts relationship stories that include friends Leslie (Smith Cho), Jill (Collette Wolfe), Mike (Christopher Moynihan), and Wayne (David Walton).
Originally titled 100 Questions for Charlotte Payne, the pilot was directed by Emmy Award-winning director James Burrows. NBC ordered it to series but then recast several characters and director Alex Hardcastle took over. After six installments were produced, the network cut the episode order and shut down production. Then, the show's...

NBC's new comedy series "100 Questions" is undergoing more casting changes ahead of its midseason debut.
The series' producing team has opted to recast two more regular roles, played in the pilot by Elizabeth Ho and Joy Suprano.
That follows the dismissal of another regular in the pilot, Amir Talai, a couple of weeks ago.
With the three casting changes, only three original "100 Questions" cast members will stay on: star Sophie Winkleman, male lead David Walton and Christopher Moynihan, who also created the show and serves as an executive producer.
The Ums/Tagline-produced "100 Questions" centers on a young woman looking for love (Winkleman) who joins a popular online dating site.
The three vacant roles on the series, which are being recast, are her male dating counselor and two girlfriends.
British TV director Alex Hardcastle has been tapped as house director on "100 Questions," taking over from sitcom veteran James Burrows, who helmed...
