- Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, 1972.
- Center with the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens, 1950-1951 and 1952-1953 thru 1970-1971.
- In January 2005, he announced that he would auction off much of his personal NHL memorabilia to acquire funds to support his granddaughter's university education. The auction closed February 22, 2005 and included his Stanley Cup ring from 1958-1959 and a replica of the Conn Smythe Trophy he won in 1965, the inaugural year for the playoff MVP award.
- He was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on December 19, 1969 and the C.C. (Companion of the Order of Canada) on May 6, 1998 for his services to sports and charities in Canada.

- He helped lead the Montreal Canadiens to an unprecedented 5 straight Stanley Cups, 1956-1960; 10 in all over a nearly 20-year career. When he retired in 1971, he was the Canadiens' all-time leader in points, second in goals, and the NHL's leading playoff scorer. His jersey number 4 was retired that year.
