He may have been preceded by characters like Lord Ruthven and Carmilla, but Dracula is still the quintessential vampire, with Bram Stoker’s iconic novel boasting over two hundred cinematic adaptations and inspiring most modern vampire media. That being said, vampire movies have long worked their way out from beneath the shadow of Stoker’s gothic opus, offering up insanely varied stories about our favorite blood-sucking beasts.
And with Chris McKay’s upcoming Renfield proving that there are still fresh spins to be had on the Dracula formula, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the most under-appreciated vampire movies out there. After all, there’s nothing like discovering a hidden gem within a sea of similar genre flicks.
To be featured on this list, a movie needs to be specifically about vampires (that means no other supernatural creatures like werewolves) and has to approach...

'Affliction' movie: Nick Nolte as the troubled police officer Wade Whitehouse. 'Affliction' movie: Great-looking psychological drama fails to coalesce Set in a snowy New Hampshire town, Affliction could have been an excellent depiction of a dysfunctional family's cycle of violence and how that is accentuated by rapid, destabilizing socioeconomic changes. Unfortunately, writer-director Paul Schrader's 1998 film doesn't quite reach such heights.* Based on a novel by Russell Banks (who also penned the equally snowy The Sweet Hereafter), Schrader's Affliction relies on a realistic wintry atmosphere (courtesy of cinematographer Paul Sarossy) to convey the deadness inside the story's protagonist, the middle-aged small-town sheriff Wade Whitehouse (Nick Nolte). The angst-ridden Wade is intent on not ending up like his abusive, alcoholic father, Glen (James Coburn), while inexorably sliding down that very path. Making matters more complicated, Wade must come to terms with the fact that his ex-wife, Lillian (Mary Beth Hurt), will never return to him,...

To celebrate the release of Afflicted, out on DVD 6th October 2014, we are happy to say that we have a copy on DVD up for grabs courtesy of EntertainmentOne.
Afflicted comes straight from the producer of Insidious and Sinister, and winner of the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay awards at Austin’s prestigious Fantastic Fest, Afflicted reinvents a familiar horror genre with a smart and stylish combination of pulse-pounding action and bloody terror.
Afflicted is one of those movies where the less you know about it going in, the greater the reward. Without giving too much away, it takes a familiar horror genre and gives it a dazzling and totally unexpected spin. Co-writers, co-directors and co-stars Derek Lee and Clif Prowse have produced a stunning debut feature, packed with superlative effects, stunts and performances that belie the movie’s indie roots and modest budget.

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead return to the wild world of horror features (the pair have a short in the upcoming V/H/S sequel) with a movie that looks interesting, even if it feels very similar to something else you may have seen earlier this year.
Spring stars Lou Taylor Pucci as Evan, a lost young man who escapes to Italy after a number of tragic events destroy his home life. There he meets the woman of his dreams (Nadia Hilker) except it quickly becomes clear that the beautiful woman is hiding a dark secret.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Operation Petticoat The USS Sea Tiger has seen better days as a Navy sub during World War II, but it hasn’t seen any action. Commander Sherman (Cary Grant) would like the chance to rectify that before the boat is sent to a watery grave, and with the help of a shifty junior officer (Tony Curtis) he sets out to give the Sea Tiger one last shot at glory. Who knew it would come with an assist from five Army nurses in need of a lift? This 1959 comedy classic has been on my list of shame for far too long so it was great to not only finally see it but also to discover just how fantastic it truly is. Grant is as charming as ever here playing a wonderful combination of suave and frazzled...

Given its fairly reliable audience base, the horror genre affords burgeoning filmmakers the chance to showcase their skills in inventive fashion, which the fresh, technically accomplished “Afflicted” surely does. A shared effort in just about every way between writer-director-actors Clif Prowse and Derek Lee, the movie — a Toronto Film Festival selection and a smash hit at Fantastic Fest last year — chronicles an international video travelogue gone wrong, when one of the pair has an encounter with a mysterious Parisian woman and succumbs to an illness that includes all sorts of uncomfortable transformations. Just when you think the found footage boat has officially set sail, another flick comes along that reminds you why this sub-genre can be awesome. Derek Lee and Clif Prowse's truly killer vampire flick Afflicted (review) is just such a film, and we recently spoke with them about it!
The thing about a good found footage movie, first and foremost, is that it has to feel real. Once a false note is hit, the illusion is broken and the experience is ruined. We asked the duo how they approached this fact.
"For us it was about never breaking the illusion," says Lee. "If we managed to sell over the top in the found footage genre and people bought it? That is super gratifying. We were so hard on our selves to not break it. That final fight scene of the film, we would have way preferred to shoot that scene traditionally!

With a title like "Afflicted," and the skin-crawling movie posters that have accompanied, there's no question a creature is coming. But for "Afflicted" co-stars/co-directors Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, it's all about the timing and emotional expenditure to get to that first true scare in their horror film. It was back in late 2013 that I talked to longtime friends and collaborators Lee and Prowse, as they took their small budget film to genre-loving Fantastic Fest in Austin. On film, they happen to also play filmmaking friends Derek and Cliff, who travel overseas and are suddenly sidelined by a newly contracted health condition. It was just this past week the pair finally unleashed their found footage/documentary-style film into theaters, on a small enough scale that the film's greatest thrills and even its central creature have not been spoiled, to some degree. Below, however, are some spoilers. Check out what...

Just when everyone’s ready to start hammering in the final nail in the found footage coffin, then comes along a great little indie movie like Afflicted proving that Pov-style filmmaking really does still have a lot to offer. Co-writers and directors Clif Prowse and Derek Lee craft a truly disturbing and clever new spin on modern vampire lore, all while working within a modest budget.
Rather than letting their budgetary constraints hold back their story, Prowse and Lee let their stunning visuals and compelling story do all the heavy lifting, creating a horror tale that’s as scary as it is endearing.
Afflicted follows the characters of Derek (Lee) and Cliff (Prowse) as they embark on a year-long trip around the world after Derek is diagnosed with Avm, a neurological disease that could end his life at any moment. Things start off innocently enough for the two longtime pals as they arrive in Europe,...

Found footage horror films are everywhere these days, but "Afflicted" looks like it could stand out from the rest of the pack. The film debuted at Toronto to favorable reviews, and now CBS Films Films has released a new TV spot (exclusive to Indiewire) in time for the film's release this weekend. The film was written, directed, and produced by Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, who star as a pair of lifelong friends who travel around the world to film a web series, made more meaningful by Lee's brain aneurysm, which has almost guaranteed him to an early death. When Lee starts to display new, superhuman powers following a hookup, the two are initially thrilled, then terrified when darker aspects of his change start to show through. "Afflicted" has earned positive reviews even among those tired of the found footage subgenre, with Indiewire's own critic writing favorably about it here.

Canada is a scary place. I know that may be hard to believe given its reputation south of the border, but it’s true. At least since the mid-1970s something about the Great White North has inspired its citizens to go forth and make horror films. Good ones at that. Derek Lee and Cliff Prowse’s Afflicted, one of our 13 Best Horror Films of 2013, is only the most recent to hit American theaters. It won’t be alone, either, as Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy continues to unsettle and confuse audiences in its third week. The glut of terrifying entertainment from Canada begs some sort of explanation. Obviously there’s more to the nation than the stereotype of the apologetic, self-effacing peacenik but the Maple Terror phenomenon is now large enough to merit some light-hearted analysis. Let’s start with Margaret Atwood. Back in 1972 she published a book of literary theory called “Survival: A Thematic Guide to...

The found footage style movie has been well abused in the last decade but as with any style or genre of filmmaking, it's not without high points. The Blair Witch project still stands as the juggernaugt, followed a close second by Cloverfield and some might argue Chronicle (though the only thing I really love about that movie is the concept and the fact that it marked the arrival of the very talented Dane DeHaan) and now we can add a third (or fourth, depending on where you fall) title to the list of stand out titles: Afflicted.
Written, directed and starring the duo of Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, Afflicted begins as a travelogue of two friends taking a yearlong trip around the world and documenting it for their friends and family at home. The trip kicks [Continued ...]...

Today, CBS Films is releasing Afflicted, the stunning debut feature from the filmmaking team of Clif Prowse and Derek Lee, which follows two friends (played by both Prowse and Lee, long-time pals in real life) as they travel the world, only to have their trip cut short when one of them becomes infected with a vampire-like virus.
During a recent press day, Daily Dead had the opportunity to sit down and chat with both Lee and Prowse about their wholly original spin on modern vampires, their thoughts on creating complicating characters, the challenges of Pov-style filmmaking and ideas for an Afflicted sequel.
First of all, congrats on Afflicted. You guys did a really fantastic job and definitely proved that found footage is still a viable storytelling device when done correctly. I read you guys have been making movies together since you were kids so I was curious: What made Afflicted...

Anyone who knows vampires only as the Twilight franchise’s sparkly-skinned specimens will get a rude shock if they watch the new found footage horror film Afflicted, which debuts to theaters and on VOD today.
“The thing we found exciting was the idea of a vampire film that was completely divorced of sexuality, romanticism, and melodrama,” says Clif Prowse, who directed the movie with his childhood friend and fellow Canadian Derek Lee. “What would it actually be like if you were biologically compelled to eat human blood and to kill people? What would that do to you emotionally? It seemed...

Insert requisite opening paragraph bemoaning the never-ending onslaught of bland, repetitive, amateurish films released under the ubiquitous guise of “found footage horror,” discuss how they make the same mistakes again and again and reduce the experience to little more than 80 minutes of frustration and boredom, and question how many, if any, of these films are in this format for any reason other than budgetary. Be sure to mention recent bright spots like The Den and Lucky Bastard though as a lead-in for the surprisingly fun, creative, and affecting film Afflicted. Derek Lee and Clif Prowse are best friends, have been for years, and have the video evidence to prove it. Clif is an amateur documentarian who dabbled in martial arts films to take advantage of Derek’s ethnicity, but his latest project is one close to both of their hearts. The duo is taking a year long trip around the world, and...

Derek Lee and Clif Prowse never expected their feature debut "Afflicted" to take off quite like it has, with a successful debut at the Toronto Film Festival's Midnight Madness followed by wins for Best Horror Movie, Director and Screenplay at Austin's Fantastic Fest. With low expectations for their first-ever film, the Vancouver writer/directors did things like put their family, friends and real names in the film, along with their high school home movies. But now that the "supernatural documentary" (as they call it) has been enthusiastically embraced by horror fans both at home in Canada and abroad, the long-time friends don't regret a thing. Well, except maybe putting those home movies on the big screen.
"Afflicted" follows Lee and Prowse as the two jet off to Europe to fulfill Lee's bucket list by spending a year sightseeing abroad, and since they're both filmmakers, they bring a camera along to document the trip.

From Dusk Till Foregone: Prowse & Lee’s Entertaining Debut Suffers From Formatting Traps
There’s a lot of uncomfortable fun to be had as Afflicted unspools, the directorial debut of Derek Lee and Clif Prowse, both playing versions of themselves in this faux documentary/found footage hybrid from filmmakers that seem to understand the importance of high stakes and emotionally invested tension. Unfortunately, they can’t quite get beyond the rather limited formatting ills of the found footage genre, defying logic and common sense as the effort to “capture everything” overrides rational thought. Despite its lapse into inevitability in the last act, however, this is certainly a winning effort that manages to utilize the cheapness of found footage to create some spectacular effects that may not have otherwise been possible on their budget, even as it backs their perspective into a corner.

Afflicted isn't your ordinary "found footage" film in that it's actually one that's good. It doesn't follow the conventional structure of Ff offerings, it's brimming with ambition and it's a smart take on vampirism. This inventive breath of fresh air is the product of Derek Lee and Clif Prowse's friendship and efforts. The two wrote, directed and star in the film and play, well, Derek and Clif - best buds who go on a globe-trotting adventure until Derek has a bloody encounter with a woman and subsequently goes through a monstrous transformation. The film was shot in various European cities and on location. For a low budget film like this - and for what they pulled off - it's an ambitious feat. I met these two in Austin, Texas shortly after the film played to Fantastic Fest audiences. I've been waiting for the release to finally post this and...
