What drew him to filmmaking is the magical way that movies make the audience feel. How we can feel genuine joy and sorrow for what essentially are images on a screen, and that's why invoking emotions in the audience is essential to Kuan's storytelling style. Growing up as a queer person, Kuan felt an intense loneliness, which is why he would like to dedicate his filmmaking career to telling stories inspired by his own queer experiences, hoping that future generation of queer youth will have representation on screen and won't feel as isolated as he did once. Kuan's goal is to be a writer-director of his own diverse and queer-experience-inspired stories, using filmmaking to amplify voices from marginalized communities and inspire positive changes in the world.
