When he was 8 years old, he entered the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind. While singing in the school choir, he and five friends formed the Happy Land Jubilee Singers. They toured throughout the 1940s, and recorded the hit "I Can See Everybody's Mother But Mine". They changed their name to the Blind Boys of Alabama, a name coined by a New Jersey concert promoter.
