London, July 11 (Ians) Former captain Geoffrey Boycott wants England management to take a strong decision and drop Jonny Bairstow from the playing XI for the fourth Ashes Test to be played at Old Trafford, starting from July 19, saying that the wicket-keeper batter has been “a shadow of his best”
Bairstow, who made his comeback after a long injury layoff, has dropped six catches in the Ashes 2023 so far, including Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne at Headingley. With the bat, aside from his first innings score in the Edgbaston Test of 78, Bairstow has registered scores of 20, 16, 10, 12 and five.
“England took a calculated gamble and it hasn’t worked. In three Tests he has dropped catches, missed a stumping and can’t score any runs. It is very sad and outwardly he may show he is upbeat and full of exuberance, but when you fail on the big stage in the full...

London, June 30 (Ians) Australian bowlers wreaked havoc with the ball in the morning session to take a 91-run lead over England, before a steady showing with the bat, led by Usman Khawaja’s 58 not out on Day 3 helped them strengthen their grip on the second Ashes Test at Lord’s on Friday.
In what turned out to be a horror morning session for England, who resumed from 278/4, they lost their next wickets for only 47 runs in a 90-minute spell of superb bowling by Australia despite missing the services of Nathan Lyon.
England were eventually bowled out for 325 in their first innings, gifting a crucial 91-run lead to the visitors. Australia then ended the Day 3 at 130/2, with a healthy lead of 221 runs.
Mitchell Starc was the main architect of England’s downfall, ending up with figures of 3/88, but mainly picking two of his wickets on the morning of day three. Starc started the procession,...

London, June 28 (Ians) Legendary opener Geoffrey Boycott believes that if England’s motto in the ongoing Ashes is to just entertain the crowds in various stadiums, then they can just well be a circus instead of a cricket team aiming to win a series.
Ahead of the Lord’s Test starting from Wednesday, England are 1-0 down in the five-game series after a two-wicket defeat to Australia in a thrilling first Test at Edgbaston.
Captain Ben Stokes was criticised by various experts for his surprise declaration on day one’s play in the first Test.
“When you get ahead of yourself — and that’s what England did — they stopped thinking. If you’re going to just entertain, they might as well be a circus. That’s it, go be a professional circus around the world.

London, Aug 21 (Ians) Legendary England cricketer Geoffrey Boycott has issued an ominous warning to Ben Stokes’ Test side following their innings defeat against South Africa, saying they won’t stand a chance of winning the Ashes next year at home if they dish out a similar display against Australia.
In one of the most scathing attacks on the home team following their innings and 12-run debacle at Lord’s in the opening Test against Dean Elgar’s South Africa, the former opener indicated that the visitors had completely deflated England following their run of four consecutive Test wins against New Zealand and India.
England could not stand up to the fiery pace of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje as the duo picked up match figures of 7/79 and 6/110 respectively, and Boycott felt that with the Australian seam attack boasting of the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, it...

Cricket in India was seen as a game played by amateurs since a person could not make a living by only playing the sport. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) did not have money in abundance, so players did not have the luxury of a contract in the past.
This changed when India modernised electronically and digitally. The Bcci, through some exceptionally brilliant administrators, monetised the sport in India and made it into a money-spinner by making itself the richest cricket establishment.
The poor Indian cricketer without a voice in earlier days became an iconic superstar, and this is precisely why Indian cricket is flourishing and the cricketers are confident in showcasing their ability.
I remember an incident during the fourth Test at the Oval in 1979. The astute and legendry cricketer, Geoffrey Boycott was at the crease accumulating runs slowly towards a century. Fielding...

Chennai, Feb 5 (Ians) Joe Root on Friday became the 15th England cricketer to play 100 Test matches for his country. He achieved the feat during the first Test of the four-match series against India here at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium.
Before the start of the first Test where England opted to bat, Root had scored 8,249 runs in 99 Test matches, including 19 hundred and 49 half-centuries. He is the fourth-highest Test scorer for England, only behind Alastair Cook, Graham Gooch and Alec Stewart.
Incidentally, Root became only the third cricketer to play both his first and 100th Test match in the same visiting country. Root had made his debut in India in 2012 in a series which England won 2-1.
Karl Hooper and Kapil Dev are the other two cricketers to make their Test debut and 100th Test in the same visiting country. While Kapil made his debut and played his 100th Test both in Pakistan,...

New Delhi, Jan 29 (Ians) There have been many brilliant batting performances in the 122 Tests played so far between Indian and England, starting 1932.
As the Virat Kohli-captained India prepare to clash with Joe Root's England in a much-anticipated four-match Test series, beginning February 5 in Chennai, here's a look at the top five top individual knocks in the history of the two teams:
Graham Gooch's 333:
Lord's, London, 1990
During the first Test of the three-match series, Gooch played a brilliant knock of 333 -- containing a dropped chnace from wicketkeeper Kiran More when he was on 36. Courtesy Gooch's 485-ball knock, England posted a mammoth total of 653/4 wickets (declared). In reply, India made 454, riding on centuries from Ravi Shastri (100), currently head coach of India, and captain Mohammad Azharruddin (121). England then declared their second innings at 272/4 wickets, setting India a target of 472. India, however, failed to replicate their first innings performance and...

Galle, Jan 23 (Ians) England captain Joe Root went past former opener Geoffrey Boycott on the list of top run-getters for England here on Saturday. Root, who was unbeaten on 67 after the end of the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka, has moved to 8,119 runs and is now five runs clear of Boycott, who retired a long time ago.
Root, who is now the sixth highest run-getter for England, could easily move to third spot by the time England's four-Test tour of India ends in March. He needs 345 more runs to topple Alec Stewart from the third position.
Former England captain Alastair Cook is the all-time highest run-getter for England with 12,472 Test runs against his name. He is followed by Graham Gooch, who has 8,900 runs. Alec Stewart, David Gower and Kevin Pietersen are the others ahead of Root.

Well the first Ashes Test between Australia and England is done and dusted and it must be said that anyone who thought that it would be a replay of the walkover in England earlier this year was given a rude shock. From the third session on the first day it was difficult to say that England won a single session during the Test Match. With the Second Test just under two weeks away, there is time for the Poms to regroup and regather, but there is no doubt that they are coming up against a hardened Australian unit that will go to Adelaide full of confidence and fire after totally dismantling England in four days- despite the heavens conspiring to stop them.
So, what else did we learn about the series from the Gabba Test? Read on…

Atom Egoyan's masterpiece omits the auteur's usual visual quirks, and plays this tragic tale (relatively) Geoffrey Boycott straight. Ian Holm plays an ambulance-chasing lawyer who is charged with winning compensation for 14 families who have lost their child as a result of a bus accident on an icy road in small-town British Columbia. Once there the solemn lawyer, whose own daughter is a drug addict, unearths terrible secrets in the community. A bold, immensely moving adaptation of Russell Banks's novel.

On the eve of this Ashes series the England selectors took the decision to drop Nick Compton and promote 22-year old Joe Root from the middle order to opener.
Compton had averaged 46.40 during the tour to New Zealand in March, but in the return series on home soil he managed just 39 runs in 4 innings with a highest score of just 16.
Root himself has opened for Yorkshire ever since he made his debut for the county back in 2009.
His first taste at the top of the order for his country was in England’s warm-up game at Chelmsford against Essex where he looked shaky at best, particularly against 20-year old fast bowler Tymal Mills, managing scores of 41 and 26.
I mentioned in a previous article that facing the new ball in International Cricket is a different proposition entirely to that at domestic level and frankly it showed.

The fun and popular David Nicholls novel has become a so-so rom-com, though Anne Hathaway's accent isn't quite the disaster many forecast
It's just 24 hours out of a person's life, but that can be a long, momentous and rather depressing time – as Ivan Denisovich will tell you. David Nicholls's hugely loved bestseller One Day, whose distinctive orange jacket design adorns beaches and train-carriages all over the country, has now, unfortunately, been turned into a slushy, mawkish and weirdly humourless romance with a sub-Richard Curtis style and more endings than Lord of the Rings. The big emotional climax is unearned and the all-important high concept is now a bit blurred.
The point of the book is that each chapter gives us a snapshot update of the same two people on the same day every year: 15th July. Pretty Yorkshire lass Emma and handsome-yet-vulnerable smoothie Dexter spend the night...

The former England opener should stick to what he knows about

"He must have been reading my comments about his bowling. It must have upset him." Yes, Geoff, it's all about you.
