ReviewThough the film is named after Malavika Mohan’s Christy, it really is Roy’s tale. Christy, at times bold and other times confused, does not seem to have the will to act or decide. On the side of a boat trudging unsteadily across the Poovar backwaters is Roy, sea-sick and throwing up. He manages a smile as he spots another friend follow suit. This is how we are introduced to Mathew Thomas’s character in Christy - a boy in the final years of school, slacking off and having such fun with mates that it will make one miss school. A catchy title song sets the tone of the film against the backdrop of Poovar, a town to the south of Thiruvananthapuram, where a lake, river, and sea merge. It is into this boyhood life that director Alvin Henry plants a forbidden love story where a boy falls in...

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is informing film and television works around the world and Malayalam-language film “Hawk’s Muffin” (“Prappeda”) – selected in this week’s International Film Festival Rotterdam – uses it as a starting point, and adds elements of war to tell a surreal tale set in a dystopian future.
After his plane drops an atomic bomb, a pilot is ordered into hiding by his commanders. The location is an isolated estate where his life intertwines with his daughter, granddaughter, a bodyguard, a priest and a policeman. Things get complicated when the granddaughter befriends a stranger.
“Hawk’s Muffin” is the feature debut of Krishnendu Kalesh, known for his 2017 short satirical noir thriller “Black Beast” (“Karinchathan”), a response to the Charlie Hebdo attack.

MollywoodThis film about an oddball pair makes us look beyond their eccentricities and see them as regular people.Sowmya RajendranShyamaprasad's Hey Jude is a sweet romance between a man who cannot understand emotions and a woman who swings between the extremes of them. I dread going for films where the characters are described as "oddball" because many a time, the filmmaker gets so carried away with establishing the "weirdness" that that's all the story becomes about. But that's why I liked Hey Jude – it isn't interested in turning the characters' oddities as a crutch, it makes us look beyond the eccentricities, to see them as regular people. Nivin Pauly plays Jude, a young man with a neurological condition (if you're a Lisbeth Salander fan, you'd make the diagnosis within minutes) that makes him...well, strange. He's very particular about the crispiness of his dosa, just how much his bread must be toasted and hugs a giant Nemo stuffed toy when he's upset. We've seen Fahadh Faasil play a role similar to this in North 24 Kaatham and comparisons are inevitable. However, the two films are different in what they want to achieve. While Fahadh's Harikrishnan goes on a journey that helps him loosen up so as to speak, Jude's "journey" is about accepting that he's different and most importantly, getting the people around him to acknowledge this. Jude is a sea away from the swashbuckling characters Nivin has played in the past (kudos to the make-up artist and stylist). As the overweight, vulnerable Jude who is stymied by the world around him, the actor manages to amuse us while drawing empathy. He's the sort of guy who mentally calculates the Bmi of a woman and declares, "Yes, you're fat", when she's asking him the dreaded, "Do you think I'm fat?" question. Trisha, as Crystal, comes as a revelation. Here's an actor who's mostly done "mass" mainstream films where she's been relegated to dancing with the hero. The few opportunities she has had to break away from formula films, she has delivered. But never has she been as convincing as she is in Hey Jude. Crystal, at first glance, appears to be one of those angelic women characters who emotionally rescue the damaged man, but there's more to her. It took me a while to get used to her new voice (dubbing by Sayanora Philip) but once that's settled, Trisha pulls off a very believable and likable Crystal. The bond between Jude and Crystal veers from little adorable moments to darker inner struggles – the staging of these scenes is done organically, without losing the lightness in tone (and the tone is unexpected in a Shyamaprasad film). The scene when Crystal tells Jude that he has nice eyes, for instance, has both actors at the top of their game. The shy blush that spreads on Jude's face and the bemused expression that Crystal wears can put a smile on the most cynical of us. The supporting cast – Siddique, Neena Kurup, Vijay Menon – is excellent. Vijay Menon as Dr Sebastian, especially, is a joy to watch. The battles between Siddique, who plays Jude's money-minded father, and his son, are hilarious. The former characterises all mental health issues as either "vattu" (madness) or "madi" (laziness) – so typical of Indian parents – and yet, the director manages to make us understand him without giving us an unrealistic change of heart. Aju Varghese appears in a lone scene and manages to make us howl with laughter. Much of the film is set in Goa. The languid pace in which the plot progresses might bother some but as a regular on Goa's sublime beaches, I liked the unhurried way in which Shyamaprasad tells his little story. Girish Gangadharan's camera captures Goa, the long stretches of the coast and the city, and turns the place into a quiet character in the film. When Jude enters and leaves Goa, or is exploring the city, the camera zooms out and shows us a panoramic view, breaking the narrative into episodes and plotting Jude's personal growth. There's a lot of music and singing in Hey Jude. The title itself comes from a Beatles song and the cafe Crystal runs, called 'The Beatles' cafe, has a band which plays songs regularly. The music, however, blends in and doesn't come in the way of getting on with the story. Hey Jude is a pleasant, well-told story that brings us closer to understanding differences, across the universe, without the tone ever turning preachy. What's not to like? MollywoodShot extensively in Kochi and Goa, the film is touted to be a musical romance.Digital NativeReports indicate that the Nivin Pauly and Trisha starrer Hey Jude is getting ready to hit the marquee on February 2. The film has reached the final stages of production and the promos are happening in full swing. While Nivin Pauly plays the lead role in the movie, it will mark Trisha’s entry into the Malayalam film industry. Despite being in the film industry for well over a decade and half, this is the first time she will be seen in a Malayalam movie. Directed by ace filmmaker Shyamaprasad, Hey Jude is bankrolled by Anil Kumar. While Nivin Pauly plays the titular role, Trisha will be seen as Crystal Ann Chakaraparambu aka Crys. Others in the star cast include Siddique, Neena Kurup, Vijay Menon and Aju Varghese. The songs for the movie have been composed by Rahul Raj, Ouseppachan, M Jayachandran and Gopi Sunder, with Ouseppachan working on the background score. Girish Gangadharan has cranked the camera for this venture and Karthik Jogesh is the editor. The teaser for the Aa Akashame song from the movie was released recently. The catchy song gives us more than a hint of what the film will be about. Shot extensively in Kochi and Goa, the film has Trisha playing a Goan girl. According to director, Hey Jude is a musical romance and Nivin’s role in it is very peculiar. In an interview given to the Times of India earlier, Shyamaprasad had said, “Nivin plays Jude, who is a peculiar character and is at odds with the world around him. Trisha’s character Crystal lives in Goa and, like Jude, is a bit of an oddball herself. The movie is about the interesting situations that happen because of their relationship, and how love and understanding transforms Jude’s life.” After 15 years in the Tamil and Telugu industry, Trisha finally takes on Malayalam with Hey Jude and the actor claims this is one of her most special films. While reports indicate that Hey Jude is slated to release on February 2, we are waiting for an official confirmation on this. Content provided by Digital Native.

MollywoodNivin plays a stiff introvert while Trisha's character is free spirited and encourages him to live a little.Tnm StaffThe teaser for the Aa Akashame song from Shyamaprasad's upcoming film with Nivin Pauly and Trisha is out. The catchy song, set to music by Gopi Sunder, gives us more than a hint of what the film will be about. From the promos so far, it's clear that Nivin will be playing an oddball character called Jude. The Aa Akashame song shows the actor to be a stiff introvert who is afraid to try anything new in life. His friend, played by Trisha, is far more free-wheeling and encourages him to live a little - from taking a dive in the pool to drinking some alcohol. We also get to see Jude's parents and a comic subplot involving a neighbour. The star cast includes Siddique, Aju Varghese, Neena Kurup, and Vijay Menon. The film marks Trisha's debut in the Malayalam film industry. Nivin has confessed in earlier interviews that he's been a fan of the actor ever since he watched her in Gautham Menon's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya. The character of Jude is distinctly different from the characters Nivin has played so far and it will be interesting to see how the actor pulls this off. His Tamil debut, Richie, turned out to be a damp squib although his home production Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela was a box-office winner during Onam last year. Sung by Madhav Nair and with lyrics by Harinarayanan Bk, Aa Akashame has been received positively. Watch:...
