Thai film maker Thanakorn Pongsuwan, best known for 2009 film “Fireball,” died on Friday. He was 46.
His death was not caused by the coronavirus outbreak, though his last rites will be affected. Rather he died following an unsuccessful battle with cancer of the blood (lymphoma.) The news was announced by his sister Manussanun Pongsuwan, who is also his producer.
Also known as “Un,” Pongsuwan was responsible for writing and directing five completed and released feature films. His “Fake” appeared at the 2003 edition of the Vancouver International Film Festival. Martial arts film “Fireball,” later released by Lionsgate in certain territories, played at the Far East Film Festival in Udine.
At the time of his death, he was close to completing “Suppose,” which was billed as “an ordinary love story” and stars Ananda Everingham and Chayanit Chansangavej (“The Iron Mask”).

Thanakorn Pongsuwan’s hardcore follow-up fight pic Fireball Begins is still in production but while we wait for his second instalment (that’s actually a prequel to the first movie) of hard core fight fest action to arrive here’s some new teaser art and a very detailed summary of the “plot” to be going on with. Hopefully there’ll be lots more to see in the new year! Synopsis: During Vietnam War, Thailand was caught in the middle between the two powers. Communism was trying to expand itself into South East Asian’s countries. USA used Thailand as their base to send their men to the War in the territories Us soldiers stationed in Thailand had a chance to see Thai boxing for the first time and they were impressed by the power and elegance of Muay Thai. They sought a way to learn the art of fighting. They...

Thai director Thanakorn Pongsuwan ('Opapatika', 'Fireball') is hard at work on his 'Fireball' prequel 'Fireball Begins'. However, Pongsuwan also is trying his hand at a new horror intriguingly entitled 'Bangkok Fable'. 24 Frames Per Second managed to score a nice new lengthy plot synopsis for the movie and you can check it out below! 'Anake is the only descendent of the Phram priesthood, an ancient bloodline. He is responsible for keeping the memory of his ancestors and their traditions alive. But he has run away from his duty to live a simple life with his wife and daughter in modern Bangkok. One day, a wealthy man called Rout calls on Anake for help, asking him to break a curse that has returned from the past. The female members of his family have become deformed, their limbs twisting in painful contortions. Even the children are not spared.

When he’s not working on ‘ Fireball Begins’ the follow up film (that’s actually a prequel) to the Muay Thai fight fest that was Fireball, it seems Thai director Thanakorn Pongsuwan is also Beavering away on a new horror project - with what sounds like ritual dark magic and evil curses by the train load - titled Bangkok Fable. There’s been a short summary of the storyline knocking around for a while now, but we now dug up a new very in depth plot summary and some teaser art for the film. A new Thai extreme horror flick for 2011? Do hope so! Synopsis: Anake is the only descendent of the Phram priesthood, an ancient bloodline. Director: Thanakorn Pongsuwan. Review: Adam Wing. You know you’re in for a rough ride when a message flashes up at the start of the movie stating that suicide is a sin and the filmmakers don’t condone it. Then we see a man take his own life in gruesome fashion, there’s a good (?) reason for this but lets make one thing clear, director Thanakorn Pongsuwan likes his action bloody. A man learns a powerful lesson about the price of immortality in Demon Warriors, a new supernatural action thriller from Thailand. The Opapatikas are a special breed of people who have died only to be resurrected and given special powers: they are invincible in combat and gain unique superhuman skills in return for killing themselves. Sounds great on paper, but believe me when I tell you there is a flipside. Detective Techit (Putthipong Sriwat) is a police investigator who...

Two professional basketball players were recently suspended for the remainder of the season by the NBA for brandishing firearms in the workplace. Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton got into serious trouble for their actions but, to their credit, at least they didn't start shooting each other on the court. Neither, by the way, do the players in the Thai action flick Fireball -- they just beat the crap out of each other.
Fireball, which was released on DVD last week, combines basketball with Thai boxing. Director Thanakorn Pongsuwan says that he wanted to try something different; setting the action on a basketball court serves two purposes. First, it enlarges the field of play for the martial arts action while still limiting it to a set stage. Second, pitting two teams of "players" against each other creates a dizzying array of battles to fill the screen. Thus, the tired premise of savage,...

The Road (15)
(John Hillcoat, 2009, Us) Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall. 113 mins
Looking for something cheery and sunny to usher those winter blues away? Well this sure as hell ain't it. In fact, "hell" is a pretty good description for this adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalypse bleakfest. Hell frozen over, through which Mortensen and son are condemned to wander, cold and hungry, as some of the few survivors of an unnamed global catastrophe – the rest are mostly marauding gangs or pathetic vagrants. Somehow, though, the effect is less devastating on screen than it was on the page. It's difficult to do justice to McCarthy's prose, and one post-apocalyptic movie landscape looks much like another. Still, it's a sustained exercise in panoramic grimness, and we don't need it to be too devastating, do we?

Following our earlier story back in August, we‘ve have a quick update of note for all our UK readers, keen to see Thanakorn Pongsuwan's (Fireball) dark and ever so slightly (ok very) violent Thai supernatural action thriller Opapatika. The UK release date has finally been announced and Opapatika: Demon Warriors is heading for an English subtitled R2 DVD release on February 15th 2010.

Now what could be better news than Thanakorn Pongsuwan’s hardcore fight pic Fireball is heading to pastures new, for release in the UK? Why, that a follow up (that’s actually a prequel) film is on way of course! The fact that Pongsuwan was planning a second Muay Thai action film has been common knowledge for a while, but up until now we’ve not had much of anything to take look at. Not any more....enter stage left a teaser poster for the flick. Reading through the synopsis it does rather sound like they will be angling for the opportunity to drop some western martial arts experts (Scott Adkins anyone?) into the mix. On that, we shall see. Still in pre production Fireball Begins should start filming in the new year. Synopsis: Tiger returns to his hometown to find it overrun by American soldiers fighting the neighbouring Vietnam War.

We tipped it was coming and those of you in the UK had best get ready for some truly bone crunching fight fun. Blending martial arts with Basketball (work with me here people) Thanakorn Pongsuwan’s ('Opapatika') action movie Fireball is a refreshing genre flick that fans of Muay Thai movies and Martial Arts should enjoy if they aren't too sniffy about text book moves. For everyone else who enjoys seeing tough fighters rip bloody hell out of each other, welcome to your new favourite film! Fireball goes on sale January 18th. Synopsis: Tai gets out of jail and discovers that his twin brother, Tan has been in coma for the past year. Tan had entered the world of Fireball, a violent game based on basketball hosted by underground criminal gangs, so as to raise money for Tai's early release. However, he was brutally beaten by another player,...

The only thing a solid muay thai action flick needs is a loose enough plot to get the characters from point A to fight scene B, but once you get everyone ready to rumble, you have to point the camera in the right direction and showcase some great martial arts. Seems simple enough, but Fireball proves that not all martial arts movies are made equal and that aiming the camera in the right direction is tougher than it seems. Tai (Preeti Barameeanat) gets out of jail thanks to bail money from his twin brother (played by the same actor) who is sadly in a coma from all the money-raising/underground mob activity he's engaged in. So, Tai goes underground and joins a Fireball team as well to avenge his brother's coma. First of all, I understand that this is an action flick first and foremost, so the story doesn't necessarily have to be of the highest caliber...

Film festivals are often a conumdrum for me because I sometimes wonder how they get started and, more to the point, who picks the films that get shown at them. My problem is that the films selected for many of the festivals don’t usually seem all that appealing (at least to me) and are often a collection of “art for art’s sake” films overwhelmed by their own sense of self-importance.
Fortunately, I don’t have this problem with the Fantastic Fest in Austin, which runs from September 24th to October 1st. The films selected for this festival represent an eclectic mix of genres and filmmakers and what I consider to be some of the most interesting, innovative and creative films being produced today. Sure, they’re not all potential Hollywood blockbusters, nor are they for everyone, but they are all pretty much guaranteed to be interesting, entertaining and in their own way,...

It’s taken two whole years to arrive, but Thanakorn Pongsuwan's (Fireball) uber violent Thai supernatural action thriller Opapatika is finally heading for an English subtitled DVD release. For the U.S it’s been re titled with the suitable (but we guess it could have been a whole lot worse) inaccurate tag of “Demon warriors.” Whilst in the UK they’ve met half way and gone with “Opapatika: Demon Warriors.” The Thai official site for the film has long since gone the way of the Dinosaurs; you can however take a gander at load of clips and pics, on the French site for the flick.

Rather than Fireball: Muay Thai Dunk (yes the Singapore release had this additional subtitle), this could have been more aptly titled as Firebrawl: Anything Goes, and I mean that in a nice way. We know enough of how sports and martial arts can coexist in movies, either in comical fashion like Stephen Chow’s Shaolin Soccer, or played in a more deadpan, idol-movie like manner with the Jay Chou vehicle Kung Fu Dunk. Joining their ranks is this latest action film directed by Thanakorn Pongsuwan, which fuses an illegal underground basketball league, and Muay Thai fighting.

Y’know, because one film combining Thai martial arts and an American past time created by a Canadian just isn’t enough. Writer/director Thanakorn Pongsuwan is currently making the prequel to the original Fireball film. Calling it Fireball Begins [heh? Heh?] the synopsis for the film is as follows…
During the Vietnam War, American soldiers stationed in Thailand learnt Muay Thai fighting. The soldiers began to challenge the local gyms and with the advantages of their size, they defeated them one after another. News of the defeats reached a village that had inherited one of the oldest styles of Muay Thai who defeated the foreigners. The soldiers challenged the villagers to a new game that combined basketball to guarantee them the competitive edge. Thai fighters had to learn the art of basketball to win the challenge of the first Fireball game and restore Thai honor.
Really, who doesn’t want to...

News on Fireball, the latest film by director Thanakorn Pongsuwan (Opapatika) has been floating around for a while now, but we saw this spiffy new poster and thought it worth a mention. An action movie blending martial arts with Basketball, you dont need a degree to work out theres been some influence on Fireballs creation due to the success of Jay Chou's 'Kung Fu Dunk,' but with taglines like "Survival game," "No rules" and "Loose and Die" it looks like this is going to being fighting dirty all the way. Theres no trailer as yet, but to see some raw footage from the pic (takes a while to load) head to the link.

Ok so not a trailer (I will put one up when there is one), but Grady Hendrix of the Variety Asia Online blog (kaiju Shakedown) posted a link to some footage from the movie.
The premise revolves around a hybrid game Muay Thai and basketball, with as you would expect, no holds barred. Sure there a background story about involving revenge etc., but really this is about people getting hit, hard! Yay!
The film is directed by Thanakorn Pongsuwan (Opapatika) and stars Theeradanai Suwannahom (Ahimsa: Stop to Run)
Fireball (distributor website)
