The American Film Institute has named 25 alumnae of the AFI Conservatory and AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women to participate in the next phase of the Fox Filmmakers Lab. A partnership between AFI and 20th Century Fox, the Lab aims to increase the number of women directing major studio films — which was even lower last year than it was in 2015 — by giving them the chance to direct short films based on Fox titles: “Alien,” “Die Hard,” “The Omen,” “The Fly,” etc.

After developing their concepts in the coming months, the 25 directors will pitch their concepts to Fox executives; one or more of them will be chosen to make a short film based on their idea. Here are the 25 women who’ve advanced to the next phase of the Lab:

Another director has been added to the growing list of those who will be working on an anthology based upon the work of one of the most acclaimed writers on the horror scene right now, Thomas Tessier. Read on for the latest on World of Hurt!
From the Press Release
Devi Snively, a participant in AFI's Directing Workshop for Women, is set to adapt Thomas Tessier’s short story “The Ventriloquist” from his Remorseless (Sinister Grin Press) collection. Snively is the fourth of five directors signed to the Thomas Tessier World Of Hurt project.
“I’m a puppet enthusiast so I was expecting one thing from ‘The Ventriloquist’ based on the title,” Snively said, “and then discovered it was about an entirely different kind of puppet that proves far scarier than your average Charlie McCarthy or Chucky variety—I just adore surprises.”

It's official, my friends: The bar is now open. The first episode of writer/director Devi Snively's sparkling new webseries, Martini Mom & Devil Spawn, has been posted and it is indeed a strange brew.
Poor Rosemary. All she wants is a drink and a smile, but an ill-advised one-night stand provides oh so much more. Martini Mom & Devil Spawn is the tale of a, shall we say, directionless young woman whose aperitif existence becomes increasingly complicated when she bears the spawn of Satan.
Martini Mom is best described as a screwball comedy with a cutting edge. When I spoke with Snively recently about the DVD release of Trippin', her first feature, she called the series "Rosemary's Baby meets Absolutely Fabulous with South Park /Family Guy-esque satirical humor, and the occasional gore and/or musical number.

Thanks to a string of award-winning short films, Devi Snively has become something of a darling on the film-fest circuit, garnering a reputation as a filmmaker's filmmaker. While this underground renown hasn't translated to aboveground fame for the auteur, this might soon change thanks to the April 10 release of Snively's first feature, Trippin', in a deluxe two-disc set that also collects all of her celebrated shorts. And if that doesn't do it, her innovative upcoming web series Martini Mom & Devil Spawn likely will.
I recently caught up with the garrulous Ms. Snively for a wide-ranging discussion that covered everything from storytelling and Spider-Man to Oklahoma and the exact location of madness.
Congratulations on the Trippin' DVD! You and Team Deviant have been making movies for more than a decade, but this is your first major release. Is it a validating experience?

Devi Snively is a sly filmmaker of considerable skill and talent, but she knows she's standing on the shoulders of giants.
For the cineaste, her movies are often a game of spot the shot. While watching her work, I've picked up shrewd nods to several filmmakers, including David Lynch, Tobe Hooper and even Alejandro Jodorowsky. But when I watched Trippin', Snively's first feature, the film I found myself thinking of was Dirty Dancing. I know that sounds strange, but stay with me here.
When I wrote about her short films a while back, I talked about Snively's use of recurring themes and her identifiable cinematic sensibilities. I like to think I can recognize her style when I see it. But Trippin' is different enough from...

The first trailer for Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is out, and so are the first pics of its low-budget rival Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is adapted from the book of the same name by that guy Seth Grahame-Smith (yes, he's the guy who wrote Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) who's really riding his one-trick pony to death by adding stupid horror elements to classic tales of literature and history. Hopefully, his undeserved success will end soon; but before that, we'll get to see the highly anticipated film version of his Lincoln tale. Benjamin Walker stars as the 16th president of the United States. Who hunts vampires:
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is directed by Timur Bekmambetov (he directed Night Watch, Day Watch, and Wanted) and will be in theaters on June 22nd, 2012.

Trippin’ is a horror/comedy hybrid much in vein of Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, from writer/director Devi Snively and Camp Motion Pictures. Six friends take a road trip to a remote cabin in the woods, looking forward to a weekend of sex, drugs, and miscellaneous mayhem. One year later, the sole survivor of said trip, runs into Devi Snively in a bar, offering to sell the rights of the story for the price of being in the film and a case of beer.
Lately there has been an onslaught of well-done horror/comedy hybrids coming out of the woodwork. It seems as if my two favorite sub genres, are quickly becoming the flavor of the month, anthologies, and campy comedy horror films, seem to be making a huge comeback.
Fans of Kevin Smith style, natural sounding dialog, and stoner humor, are going to instantly fall in love with...

A conversation with filmmaker Devi Snively is its own beast. It whips around wildly, to and fro, from subject to subject, like a snake whose head has been detached. But unlike that poor snake, there's always a keen intelligence at play.
During a typical chat, myriad eclectic references — from politics and literature to microbiology, music and, yes, even film — fly by at an exasperating pace, accompanied by an ever-present sly sense of humor. It's a vastly entertaining, yet slightly exhausting experience.
Luckily, when I contacted Devi last week for Planet Fury's Halloween Memories series, I was able to set the parameters of our dialogue. We would be talking about Halloween. Just Halloween. And only Halloween. Let's see how that went, shall we?
We're discussing Halloween Memories today, Devi. I was just talking to a friend who doesn't enjoy Halloween. How about you? Are you a Halloween person?

Filmmaker Devi Snively has been out of the limelight lately, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been busy.
Although it's been about a year since Snively's most recent effort, the striking horror noir short Last Seen on Dolores Street, the writer/director has been anything but static. Truth be told, Snively is never still; the woman is absolutely indefatigable. She always has several irons in the fire. And now, one of those irons is really starting to heat up — it even has its own website and teaser trailers.
Paige & Hadley's Prom From Hell is the latest project from Snively and her team of deviants at Deviant Pictures. This new feature hasn't gone into production yet, but it's getting quite a bit of attention from several parties. "Prom From Hell is on a development roller coaster," Snively tells me, "but the current status is we have some of our team in place,...

I just flew in from Fantastic Fest, and though I'd like to exclaim "boy, are my arms tired," to say that would be to ignore the exhaustion experienced by the rest of my body. You wouldn't think sitting in a theater watching movies for a couple of days could waste you like this, but here's a little secret: there's more to a film fest than watching movies.
This was nothing like other, smaller film festivals I've attended. Fantastic Fest started before the fest even began. Weeks before the first film ever hit the screen, emails from fest officials arrived to confirm my attendance and lay groundwork. I thought, "Oh, cool." Then, more emails from different people showed up. "It's heating up," I chuckled. Then even more emails hit and still more again. And then, revision emails arrived, altering mistakes made in previous emails. Suddenly, my once-empty email box was positively overflowing with advertisements,...

The B-Movie Underground and Trash Film Festival brings their unique collection of international sleaze on Sept. 7-11 in the city of Breda in the Netherlands. Violence, gore, general grossness and perversion are, once again, near and dear to the heart of this fun fest.

San Diego’s annual Comic-Con is mostly known for its major media spectacles, displays and panel discussions by major mainstream Hollywood studios and distributors. Lesser known is the Independent Film Festival that is hosted by and runs concurrently with the larger convention on July 21-24.
The film festival runs in a large meeting room at the Marriott Marquis Hotel and Marina, located right next door to the convention center. Each day kicks off with a “Film School” panel discussion at 10:00 a.m., then packs the late morning, all afternoon and night with independent films from all over the world.
Screenings are blocked by genre, such as Action/Adventure, Sci-Fi, Horror, Animation and Documentary. There’s also an awards presentation on the 24th, with repeat screenings of the winning films.

What with all the panels and screenings and more that take place during the San Diego Comic-Con, one of the best kept secrets about the show is its International Independent Film Festival (Cci-iff). We're co-running the Viscera Film Festival, showing the best new short horror films directed by women, just like we did last year. Here's our 2011 lineup.
It's been pretty cut-throat. Out of over 80 submissions, we struggled and wept and co-director Shannon Lark and I beat each other up over what our final lineup would be. In the end, we decided, only the best of the best could play, so we counted and recounted our judges tallies and agreed that again we'd show way too many films and have our fest run way too long.
These films are just too good to not screen. We couldn't eliminate any of them. I have to be honest: I love every film on this list. We're got some Us premieres that we're especially excited about! The 2011 Viscera Film Festival Films are:
The Party’S Over by Gigi Romero
Bon Apetit by Kate Shenton

What began as a feature-length documentary two years ago has now evolved into a webseries about women and horror films directed by Montreal filmmaker Maude Michaud, debuting April 3rd, 2011.
When we first reported on the making of Bloody Breasts, interviews were still being conducted. Now, Michaud has changed the way we'll experience her exploration of the intersection of gender and horror films.
The first episode is titled “Women love horror?” and features interviews with directors and festival owners such as , Devi Snively, Reyna Young, Shannon Lark, Katt Shea, Kier-La Janisse, Denise Gossett, Heidi Martinuzzi and Elisabeth Fies.
A new webisode will be released each month on the official website for free starting tomorrow. We can't wait! Bloody Breasts is bound to be a scholarly, well-made take on a fascinating subject.

Writer/director/actor Dave Reda has made a name for himself over the last few years with his indie genre projects including Bit Parts and his most recent effort, Horror of Our Love (which screened recently as part of the Los Angeles Comedy Festival).
We recently caught up with Reda (of Elfwtin Fillms) to find out what his top five indie genre projects are. Check them out below!
1. Hate* (*A Comedy) (Drew Daywalt and David Schneider)
This is one of my most favorite short films... A deadly vengeful speaking chicken and poison chimichangas?? This one is so well made and a total blast. Drew also is the director of the insane short film Polydeus, which is a crazy film centered around an 80's video game. The make-up on the creature is fantastic, too.
2. Death In Charge (Devi Snively)
This is such a cool short film, very well made, and an unusual Grim Reaper.

Anyone who knows what a Masters of Horror dinner is also knows that Mick Garris is probably cringing as he reads this sentence, because I've been somewhat of a thorn in his side regarding how many women attend them.
I've actually had Joe Lynch yell at me (virtually, anyway) and James Gunn chastise me publicly for saying that women don't get invited to the Masters of Horror dinners.
But I'm not bitching about that today, so Mick and James and Joe can relax. This is not a critique of them and their invitational habits. What I'm bitching about is how few women horror directors are actually available for them to invite.
What Is a Masters of Horror dinner, you ask, layperson?

“There is no pleasure. There is no pain. There is only skin.” - Pinhead, Hellraiser III
“Women tend to be more tolerant about visceral things because they have more direct personal experience with them. They cope with periods once a month, they go through childbirth and they are usually the ones who look after the bleeding and battered limbs when the kids take a tumble. They can put blood and gore in context and generally cope better than men.” - Bela Lugosi
Most scholarship on the horror film has assumed that males are the primary spectators of horror; however, there have been developments, both in scholarship as well as in mainstream media, to contradict this point. In 2009, journalist Michelle Orange pointed out, in an article written for the New York Times, “Recent box office receipts show that women have an even bigger appetite for these [horror] films than men.

Telling a story on film can be a perplexing process. Some directors require a series of two-hour movies, and several hundred million dollars, to tell just one tale and they still make a mess of it. But some directors can get it exactly right in a few minutes for a couple of thousand bucks. I was reminded of this when I watched Devi Snively’s latest short film, Last Seen on Dolores Street, in which she creates a whole world, juggles a host of tones and colors, and even manages a surprise or two along the way - all in less than four minutes. In your face, George Lucas.
Snively’s film career has been all about exploration and development. Beginning with a series of short films that allowed her to discover and perfect her directorial style, Snively seemingly reached her zenith with the masterful Death in Charge, which condensed...

Devi Snively has led several lives over the years. She’s worked as a translator, writer, editor, ballerina, adjunct professor…you know, the usual stuff. But all that life experience is taking a backseat to her latest career choice: filmmaker. While Snively has done a little bit of everything, it’s her work in the cinematic arts that is earning awards and garnering attention for this talented woman.
I first became acquainted with La Snively’s work last March at the Pretty Scary Blood Bath Film Festival. I’d previously seen her name but had only a vague notion of who she was. Then I saw her short film Death in Charge, and I realized she was a talent to be reckoned with. I made a note to check out her work and moved on to other things. Pretty/Scary editor Heidi Martinuzzi (me) gets mentioned in this ChicagoNow list of the top 13 influential women in horror history along with contemporaries Jovanka Vuckovic (journalist), Denise Gossett (film festival director), Devi Snively (filmmaker), and Debbie Rochon (actress) and icons Kathryn Bigelow (director), Debra Hill (producer), Anne Rice, Ida Lupino (actress/director), Karen Walton (screenwriter), Maila Nurmi (Vampyra), Stephenie Meyer, and Mary Shelley (author of Frankenstein.)
I'd have loved to see Cassandra Peterson, Brinke Stevens, or Mary Lambert up there instead of myself and Stephenie Meyer. But let's just pretend we didn't say that!

Film festivals exist to showcase the future talent in filmmaking and the Gasparilla International Film Festival (Giff) had plenty of talent on hand. The term filmmaking covers everyone from writers, directors, producers, to actors, actresses, and production folk. All the filmmakers that one meets at a film festival are invited to be there. They submitted their short and/or feature films and if selected by the board for screening at the festival, they are encouraged to be apart of the festivities. Or in Giff's case, four days of films and panels followed by kick-ass parties.
As I received the schedule and tried to attend as many of the events possible, I was able to meet a variety of filmmakers from all over. Most of them were kind enough to share their film and entertain my random interrogatories. Random, due to the lack of rest my mind received while covering the festival.

Award-winning genre filmmaker Devi Snively's next film will be a neo-noir called Last Seen on Dolores Street. Snively's previous work includes Raven Gets a Life, Death in Charge, Teenage Bikini Vampire, Trippin', Meat is Murder, and Confederate Zombie Massacre.
Last Seen on Dolores Street will be "a 2-minute horror noir film that will hopefully actually be disturbing and scary as opposed to our usual whimsical lighthearted approach to horror," says Snively. "I'm both very excited and very nervous - this is a whole new territory for me."...

While there literally seems to be a film festival on every corner, I am hearing of more and more each day. Even in my own back yard of New York City, little did I know that I would be attending the 9th annual film festival in the quaint sea side town of Coney Island. Yes, on every corner of the world. While my boyfriend was at that very moment up in Calgary at their International Film Fest in Canada, I was at one of the best horror short line ups in the world that night. See what I mean by every corner of the world? Not to mention the Sitges International going on right now in Spain and who knows how many other festivals are happening as I write. I think one can make a tour out of it. But the Coney Island Film Festival was special in so many ways.

Pretty/Scary produced short horror film Wretched was selected to play at the Horror Society Women of Horror Film Festival in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday April 25th.
It'll be playing alongside some great female-helmed/oriented films including Pretty Bloody, which extensively features Pretty/Scary. Pretty/Bloody is a documentary about women in horror by Donna Davies and Kimberly McTaggert. Also playing are Liz Adams's Side Effect and Devi Snively's Death In Charge, which is a huge honor, because both those films are way better than Wretched. Also playing are the features Women's Studies, Phobia, The Making of Sculpture, and Wicked Lake.
