And so it came to pass that in October 2008 that the end of the road was in sight for the Tenth Doctor. The edict came from the man himself, David Tennant, speaking via a video link (and inexplicably flanked by two grim-faced reapers of death) at an awards ceremony. Yes, he'd stick around for a clutch of one-off specials but after that he'd be bidding adieu. And so, countless Tennant girly fans wept into their Tenth Doctor action figures. TVs were thrown out of windows. Riots broke out. Well, I exaggerate, but the feeling at the awards megillah was so full of disappointment that you could almost sense that some rogue fan would go up to Tennant and take his award away from him.
Don't forget, by 2008, Tennant was regarded by a good number of fans as one of the most popular Doctors ever, winning Best Doctor polls and earning numerous accolades for his portrayal.

The Blu-ray and DVD releases of Doctor Who: The Complete Specials have a defined audience: the millions and millions of fans who followed the original run and those who’ve signed on since its revival in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the titular adventurer. However, it should be noted by the casual reader that The Complete Specials collection is actually just as accessible to the curious viewer, even without a deep understanding of the Doctor Who legacy. The series has and always will be about fun science-fiction adventures blended with elements of the fantastic as they’re faced by the ever-reincarnated Doctor Who, whom, in this collection, is played by David Tennant, who held the role until just recently. The five stories collected here are well-rounded examples of Sci-Fi entertainment, and the extras on the disc only serve to increase the set's impressive value.

The Doctor Who Christmas Specials have normally been delightful affairs, bridging the events of one season with teases for the forthcoming season. This time, though, The Next Doctor actually kicks off a season of four specials featuring the last time David Tennant will command the Tardis as the doctor as he makes way for young Matthew Smith in 2010.
When the special aired last December, there was intense speculation whether David Morrissey was actually being introduced early as the replacement. It certainly felt that way as we learned the villains would be the Cybermen and that Velile Tshabalala had been added as Morrissey’s companion, a woman named Rosita, which more than echoes the now gone Rose Tyler.
Clearly, that was not the case and was an interesting premise with so-so execution. In short, while visiting London on Christmas Eve, 1851, the Doctor comes up against a new threat but also a man acting,...

Digital Spy delivers ten spoilers for the Christmas special:
1. The mysterious Cybershades can jump quite high.

Velile Tshabalala will guest star in 2008’s Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Next Doctor”. In a profile published in West Sussex Today, she revealed some details about her character Rosita, "I am just so excited about it. We filmed it in April in Cardiff and Gloucester and Monmouth and so it has died down a bit, but now it is getting closer and I just can't wait.
"It is just a one-off Christmas special but out of all the episodes I could have been asked to do it is far better that it is this one. The Doctor is faced with another Doctor. Rosita is the assistant to the other Doctor but as the episode goes on she starts helping the Doctor we know."
Will she follow the debut of Donna Nobel in a special and become the Doctor’s next assistant?
