In a first for Italy, young adult romantic drama “Fabbricante di Lacrime” (“The Tearsmith”) – a Netflix Italy original – has reached the No. 1 slot on the streamer’s global movie chart in the non-English-language category.
Based on the turgid eponymous Italian bestseller by a writer who goes by the pen name Erin Doom, “The Tearsmith” dropped globally on Netflix April 4 and rapidly climbed the streaming giant’s global charts. “The Tearsmith,” directed by Alessandro Genovesi, has now been ensconced in Netflix’s No. 1 non-English-language movie slot for two weeks.
Set in the U.S., “Tearsmith” follows two diametrically different orphans named Nica and Rigel who are adopted by the same family from the Sunnyside Orphanage, dubbed “the grave” by the children there. Nica is naive and innocent and Rigel – who was her nemesis at the abusive orphanage – is a violent bully. In their new home, the pseudo siblings fall in love,...

As the streaming wars rage on, there's one area where Netflix completely dominates all of its competition — international cinema. While the streaming juggernaut is still working on perfecting its subtitling and audio description services (as well as its localization issues), there's no denying that Netflix has a swath of non-English speaking films and TV shows to help expand the tastes of subscribers worldwide. The streaming platform also has no problem highlighting international projects as well, with entertainment from South Korea frequently landing on the Top 10 charts. According to FlixPatrol, a new teen fantasy romance film out of Italy is currently landing on the Top 10 charts in countries all over the globe, despite the film debuting on Rotten Tomatoes with a painful 0% as of publication. If this movie is as bad as critics are making it out to be, how the heck did it end up charting worldwide?

Every love story is a fairytale, right? Love has been the central point of the earliest literature, and it still hasn’t changed much. How Does Nica End Up In The Orphanage?
Nica is an 8-year-old girl who grew up listening to fairy tales. She loses her parents in a car accident, leaving little Nica all alone. Nica is sent to Sunny Creek Orphanage, where she meets Margaret. Margaret is in charge of the orphanage, and she has set three rules for the kids that they must adhere to: “order, respect, and obedience.” No kid can have their personal belongings in the orphanage, and Rigel snatches her pendant, Nica’s last memento of her mother.

There is no dearth of young adult films that focus solely on forbidden love and the kind of excitement it brings. There is a percentage of people who enjoy watching such content, and there are several examples of such films that are littered across many OTTs. The After series of films on Netflix and Culpa Mia on Amazon Prime are films that cover the physical intimacy and the growing attraction between two very troubled people, who end up finding their way back to each other. Following that pattern, The Tearsmith is yet another tale of forbidden love between two teenagers who are forced to live together. The common factor between all the films mentioned above is that they are based on books and were picked up to be adapted into screenplays. The Tearsmith is a Netflix Italian original film that is based on the book of the same name by Erin Doom.
