I am Wayne L. White. I am the former three-time winter manager at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. In that position I was responsible for the health and safety of my three crews of approximately 42 personnel, the station itself and all science assets. This assignment was in one of the most challenging environments on the planet. Winter at the South Pole runs from February 15th to around the beginning of November. During winter, the crews experience nearly 5 months of darkness and cold lower than minus 100F/73C. They are physically cut off from the outside world and there is no viable way to leave. During my last year in 2020, the crew faced further isolation and external pressures with the virus that ravaged the world. During this time, I participated in the making of videos in 2020 for The Explorers Club: "Minute at the Mic" and "World Oceans Week." I enjoyed being outside daily and amassed over 4300 miles walking. These things and many others were the subjects of my book "Cold: Three Winters at the South Pole."
Prior to my time in the United States Antarctic Program, USAP I was a Defense Department contractor. For over twenty years I specialized in remote assignments and lived and worked at Diego Garcia British Indian Territory, Singapore, Midway Atoll, Shemya Island Alaskan Aleutians, Iraq, Kuwait, Wake Island, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Ascension Island. Before that I was involved in personal expedition type travels to New Guinea, the Amazon and Africa.
I am a US Marine Veteran and hold a BA in geography from California State University Fullerton and a master's in public health in environmental health sciences from Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
I own the Baylor-Norvel home of Rockport Texas which was built in 1868. The home contains my collection of ethnic and exploration artifacts. This home and I had scenes in the movie "Raca" directed by Drew Saplin which won the 2023 Rockport Texas Center for the Arts Film Festival for a short film. My book "Cold: Three Winters at the South Pole" as of December 2023 is being used as the basis for a screenplay that will be promoted and marketed as a full-length movie.
