Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1986 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. For much of the band's career, they have been a trio with drummer Tré Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 prior to the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk (1991). Green Day has sold more than 85 million records worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording.

Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the band's first song "Why Do You Want Him?", when he was only 14 (appears on the '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours' album).
The band was renamed from their previous name The Sweet Children, after their first semi-successful song.
Released their first album '1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours', a compilation album featuring singles from their earlier EPs, "1,000 Hours", "39/ Smooth", and "Slappy", hence the peculiar name. [1990]

Scored 7 wins (out of 8 nominations) at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami: Best Video for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best Direction, Editing and Cinematography in a Video, Viewer`s Choice Award for "American Idiot".
In some songs, the lyrics don't include the title's name. For example, in "Basket Case", the phrase "basket case" is not in the lyrics.
In their song "Jesus Of Suburbia", there is absolutely no chorus. Kelli Garner appeared as "the girlfriend" in the video.
Won 2 MTV European Music Awards in 2005 for "Best Rock" and "Best Album" ("American Idiot").
They came up with their name in honor of a day-long weed binge.
