In 2001, the world was introduced to the iPod and Australia had its first taste of digital television.
It’s fair to say the year left its mark in more ways than one, but for Cameron McCulloch, not everything went to plan.
At the time, the then film student was on the verge of completing his feature debut, Scam, starring Kestie Morassi, only for a large portion of the footage to be destroyed in a housefire at a crew member’s place.
Twenty years on and the film is set to have its world premiere at next month’s Monster Fest after being resurrected by cast member and editor Nathan Hill during the 2020 lockdown.
McCulloch, who wrote and then filmed the project on a MiniDV in 12 days for $5,000, said he was “in awe” that it was finally seeing the light of day.

Meryl Streep is not a TV neophyte. She has appeared in two of what is now called a limited series, the first time at the beginning of her career in Holocaust (1978) and then in Mike Nichols’ adaptation of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America (2003), she won an Emmy each time. So it’s no surprise that she’s making another limited series, particularly in this era when they are so in vogue with movie stars. The surprise here is who she’s collaborating with; J J Abrams.
Sadly however it's not Felicity:The Later Years. The project is The Nix, an adaptation of the bestselling first novel by Nathan Hill about a woman who gets national press exposure for throwing rocks at a conservative governor on the presidential campaign trail. Sounds like it would be right in Meryl’s wheelhouse.

J.J. Abrams is set to develop a series adaptation of the novel The Nix for Warner Bros Television. Meryl Streep is set to star in and produce the series, and Abrams will even direct some episodes.
The novel the series will be based on was written by Nathan Hill, and it's described as "a sprawling generational tale that focuses on a hippie-era mother who gets national press exposure for throwing rocks at a conservative governor on the presidential campaign trail." Deadline goes on to offer more story details saying, "before you know it, her estranged son — a professor, aspiring novelist and general underachiever — seizes an opportunity to get himself out of debt by writing a scathing profile of his estranged mother."
Abrams and Streep are both extremely talented and powerful in the entertainment industry, and there's no doubt that this series is going to be amazing.

If proof were needed that we are indeed living in a golden age of television, it just arrived. Warner Bros Television has snapped up the rights to adapt the popular novel The Nix for the small screen, and has lined up the man that successfully resuscitated the Star Wars franchise – J.J Abrams – to shepherd the project. He will not be doing so alone, however, as the most Oscar-nominated actor in history – Meryl Streep – is also on board.
The combination of Abrams and Streep is a goose-bump inducing prospect, and sends a very clear message about the calibre of the source material. The book upon which this limited series will be based is the debut novel of Nathan Hill, and explores the estranged relationship between a son and his mother – as explained on Goodreads.

Nathan Hill gets behind the camera to direct his latest thriller/horror feature film 'Seance'. A title which is already established in a long line of horror films, much like his 'Jekyll and Hyde' film Hill attempts to make a genre film that he has described as the most frightening tale ever told to him personally. Hill brings back 'Tomboys' veteran Daniel Rankin to play the lead role of William Trigger. Hill wrote the screenplay and headed off to the outskirts of the Mornington Peninsula to shoot the grueling two week indy production. The shoot was filled with creepy coincidences and a frightening all night shoot which apparently drove most of the crew involved, hysterical....

'Tomboys', directed by Nathan Hill, has been picked up for distribution by Mvd Entertainment in America. The film is now available on all formats, including DVD, Blu-Ray and digital download. The grindhouse Aussie flick has journeyed a long way from a small country town in Victoria, Australia where it was made. First being picked by Shock Entertainment in it's home country, then followed up by Navarre on Blu-ray in the USA and Canada and finally finding a home with Mvd for worldwide distribution. Mr Hill says he loves making these kinds of movies in his hometown of Australia because it is a financially viable way to do it. However he does rely on the American market to sell his films otherwise there would be no incentive to make them. Hill says these types of horror genre flicks do not get enough support in his own country....
