Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a terrific month for mining new music. I caught an advance screening of Led Zeppelin's new concert movie at MoMA (and their press conference), discovered what may be my favorite album of the year, and found inspiring young musicians sharing their chops and muses with the world. With the holidays around the corner, here are some early suggestions for music very much worth sharing with friends, lovers, bosses, and family.
"You're So Great / It's All Right, Ma" Wendy James You're So Great E.P. (Cobraside)
If Brit-born/NYC-based Ms. James's claim-to-fame-band Transvision Vamp was a tad too sugar-pop coated for your New Yawk punk rawk palette, not to worry. Thanks to guitarist James Williamson (Iggy Pop Stooge) and drummer James Sclavunos (Nick Cave alumnus), she's found some downtown 'tude. The A-side is a fun retro Ramones-style punk ditty, but it's the flip-side Grinderman-grind Dylan cover where it all comes together.

The film Celebration Day captures Led Zeppelin onstage in all their glory in 2007. The band discuss their musical legacy, reputation for excess – and why they will never reunite again
The first thing you notice is how close together they are. Led Zeppelin are not scattered around the huge stage of the O2 arena in London like 100m relay runners awaiting the baton, like most bands at this venue. They are huddled within a few feet of each other in the centre of the stage, and they stay that way for most of the two hours or so of Celebration Day, the new movie that captures their one-off return to playing live in December 2007. Jimmy Page might wander off a few feet to hit a guitar pedal, John Paul Jones occasionally sets his bass down to sit at a keyboard, but Robert Plant sings from the heart of the group, just...

It’s Monday, so we all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for another rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s a jam-packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, August 20th 2012.
Pick Of The Week
Puppet Master (DVD/Blu-ray)
Alex Whittaker and three other gifted psychics are investigating rumors that the secret of life has been discovered by master puppeteer Andre Toulon. But the psychics quickly discover Toulon’s secret of death in the form of five killer puppets – each one uniquely qualified for murder and mayhem. Tunneler has a nasty habit of boring holes in people with his drill bit head. Ms. Leech regurgitates killer leaches that suck her victims dry. Pinhead strangles his enemies with his powerful vice-like hands.

Okay, for the very first time, I sat down and watch the entire game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants, why? Because I was anticipating the Madonna half-time show! I think she delivered and showed to the world that she's still the Queen of Pop. Love her as a performer, but as a director? "W.E." is a totally different story!
But I digress.
We're here to talk about the boatload of movie trailers that were supposed to tease us. Were you teased? Which one is your favorite Super Bowl movie trailer?
My heart belonged to "The Avengers" even though the last shot of the trailer looked just like a bunch of people in funny costumes trying to save the world.
My least favorite? Do I really have to endure Jar Jar Binks again in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" 3D or not?
So without further adieu,...

Ranked: The Cars' Singles from Worst to Best In honor of the first new Cars album in 24 years, we get nostalgic. By Alex Heigl On May 10, The Cars will release Move Like This, their first album since 1987's Door to Door. In honor of a band with a boatload of ubiquitous songs and no one definitive album, we're ranking all of their Top 40 singles from worst to best. 12. "I'm Not the One" (from Shake It Up, 1981) "I'm Not the One" sounds like Mark Mothersbaugh's Casio score for The Life Aquatic, and I don't really mean that in a good way. Ric Ocasek's voice expresses vague neurosis better than heartfelt emotion, and the result is that his lead here is consistently out-emoted by the backing vocals. Oh, and the synth solo at 1:55 sounds like John Paul Jones' on Led Zeppelin'[...]...

After a slow start owing to traffic backups and a massive tangle at a two-fold ticket and security check-in for tens of thousands, southern California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was in full swing by late afternoon Friday and back to its happiest-musical-place on-Earth status Saturday.According to officials, 75,000 or more attended daily, and that's not counting the many thousands working the event, as well as performers, their crews, entourages and guests. At times, it felt like perhaps too many in the venue; navigation was not easy, making it more difficult than during past years to catch a little of this and that.Several acts, including Bad Lieutenant, the Cribs and Frightened Rabbit, were grounded in Europe by the volcanic ash from Iceland.Friday's headliner, Jay-z, turned in a commanding performance backed by a 10-member band that included a drummer and percussionist, a cut-loose guitarist and a brace of horns.

Fact: Dave Grohl is awesome. When he's not churning out rock anthems as the frontman for the platinum-selling Foo Fighters, Grohl is in the studio recording with his rock heroes like Lemmy Kilmister and John Paul Jones. And when Grohl isn't making music, he finds time to make hilarious cameos in "Saturday Night Live" sketches. The man makes more guest appearances than Lil Wayne.
How does he do it? With copious amounts of highly-caffeinated coffee, obviously. In a hilarious and slightly hypnotic new video posted to Them Crooked Vultures' YouTube account, Dave Grohl terrorizes his bandmate (and Queens of the Stone Age mastermind) Josh Homme with incessant demands for more coffee by screaming what I hope will be the new catchphrase of 2010: "Fresh pots!" Homme's confessional on Grohl's caffeine addiction makes me pine for a TV special like "True Life: I'm Addicted to Caffeine...

Private FBI files on Michael Jackson have been unveiled, revealing death threats and FBI trips to the Philippines to investigate child molestation accusations. Frank Paul Jones, who threatened to kill Jackson and his fans, claimed to be entitled to half of the Thriller singer's estate. When no one responded to his threats, he said he would target President George Bush Senior. His letter said: 'I'll commit mass murder at a Michael Jackson concert if necessary, in an attempt to murder Michael, then you will have to deal with my situation in the public.' A later letter stated: 'I decided that because nobody is taking me serious that I am going to Washington to threaten...

Earlier in the week, the FBI's private files on Michael Jackson were made public and now, contents of the files have revealed death threats that were made against the late pop star. Not that anything is particularly shocking when it comes to Michael Jackson.A man by the name of Frank Paul Jones was sentenced in 1993. Jones was believed to be obsessed with Janet Jackson, and had also made threats against the first President George Bush and John Gotti, whom he said was his father. So, you know. During more than a decade of monitoring, the Federal Bureau of Investigation helped set up interviews over child-molestation allegations and investigated a possible terror attack and an alleged assassination plot against Michael Jackson, according to newly released FBI files.
Despite monitoring Jackson for more than a decade, the files don't contain any major revelations about the late pop singer's private life and the bureau never uncovered any solid evidence against him in connection with two different molestation allegations, according to The Associated Press.
The documents made public on Tuesday date from 1992 to 2005, and though the FBI said they number about 600 pages, only 333 were released due to privacy rules and a desire to protect investigative techniques.
Though they don't contain many bombshells, they do reveal that the 1993 sentencing of Frank Paul Jones...

So, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation wasn't catching Osama Bin Laden, it was piling up the paperwork on Michael Jackson. The FBI today released seven files it compiled on the late singer from 1992 to 2005—333 pages of evidence-gathering, rambling letters from a guy who thought he was John Gotti's son and has really hard to read handwriting. Highlights include a heretofore undisclosed 1995 child-porn investigation, which went nowhere. You can read all the files here yourself, or you can peruse the best lines, quotes and other stuff we found in 'em. Let's get started: • "My interest is that half of Michael's estate is mines."—Faux Gotti Frank Paul Jones,...

The FBI assisted local authorities in a futile attempt to get cooperation in a 2005 child molestation case against Michael Jackson from a boy who accused the pop star of molesting him in 1993, documents show. The documents released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under the Freedom of Information Act also reveal that Santa Barbara police had concerns about a possible terrorist attack related to the 2003 arrest of Jackson, which led to a request for FBI assistance. The FBI concluded there was no threat. No criminal charges were ever filed in the 1993 case. Instead the then 12-year-old boy refused to cooperate with officials and accepted a multi-million dollar settlement from Jackson. Jackson was acquitted of all charges in the 2005 case, which went to trial. The documents show that the FBI and Santa Barbara officials met in 2004 with Jackson's 1993 accuser, but were unsuccessful in getting his cooperation. The heavily redacted FBI...
