The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

Given the success of movies like Paranormal Activity and Insidious, Hollywood is finally catching on to the fact that you don't need a huge budget to make a good movie. Yeah, and the box office dollars don't hurt either!
According to Deadline producers Roy Lee, John Middleton, and Lawrence Grey have partnered in Primal Pictures, a new genre arm of Vertigo Entertainment. The company will share the first look deal that Vertigo has with Warner Bros, and a big part of Primal’s mission is to put the studio into the ultra-low-budget genre game. Primal will also produce a slate of micro-budget films with independent equity financing.
Among the projects you can expect to see from Primal are:
Hidden from writer-directors Matt and Ross Duffer. The flick focuses on a family who escape a mysterious outbreak by taking refuge in a bomb shelter. The Cure, a film about a husband...

Beyonce Knowles flaunts her beauty and sexiness in her latest music video for "1+1". Unlike in her previous clips which usually feature elaborate settings, show-stopping costumes and backup dancers, the wife of rapper Jay-z is seen in solitude in this new one.
Aimed to tell a love story at its best, the video is directed by Beyonce with the help from Laurent Briet and Ed Burke. It features experiments of psychedelic visual effects and innovative lighting that give a cinematic feel. She is tantalizingly pulling the straps of her dress at one point, and weeping a drop of tear at another.
"1+1" is lifted from Beyonce's latest studio album "4" which has been in stores since June this year. Written by The-Dream and produced by Christopher "Tricky" Stewart, the song is one of her favorite tracks from the album.
To continue promoting the album, Bey has secured several high-profile performances. The 29-year-old...

She may not know much about algebra, but when it comes to music videos, Beyoncé's expertise is unmatched.
On Thursday (August 25), Queen B premiered the video for her power ballad "1+1" on E!, just days before her performance at MTV's 2011 VMAs. The clip -- which was directed by Beyoncé, Laurent Briet and Ed Burke -- is the third from her 4 LP and the first in a series of story-driven videos from the album.
As the acoustic guitar strings are plucked and black screen fades in, Beyoncé comes into focus. She stands with blond hair draped just below her exposed shoulders. Back in 2008 we were surprised and frustrated by The Strangers. This low budget thriller made us all uncomfortable to be home alone. Well, it looks like those masked weirdos will be back to creep us out again.
Empire reported today that writer/director Bryan Bertino is bringing us a sequel to the 2008 film. This time, however, he is not stepping behind the camera. That job will be left to Laurent Briet. This is what Empire had to say about this sequel:
The Strangers, if you missed it, is a genuinely scary home-invasion movie in which Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman are terrorised by three silent, masked assailants, whose agenda and history is never explained. Original director Bertino has relinquished the cameras to Laurent Briet this time, but has once again written the screenplay, which sees the strangers attacking a family of four in a labyrinthine trailer park.

New York Knicks basketball player Amar'e Stoudemire is talking with Relativity's top dog Ryan Kavanaugh about executive producing The Strangers 2 . Stoudemire - who has his mitts in a number of things, like fashion and acting - is apparently a huge fan of the original film starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. He told the New York Post at an event this week he's looking to get involved in the sequel. The Strangers 2 is written by Bryan Bertino and will serve as a directing vehicle for Laurent Briet. In February of this year, we confirmed that casting and location scouting was underway. Relativity appears to be dragging its feet with the film, I'm beginning to wonder if Stoudemire is injecting some funds to get this film rolling for real. Learn more about the story for...

Today we receive an update on the sequel to one of my favorite horror films of the past few years, The Strangers. News reports are coming in today that state casting and location scouting have begun for the project and that things are getting underway. The film will receive direction from Laurent Briet, working on a from a script by Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the original. Apparently the plot will focus on a family living in a trailer park that is stalked by the same trio from the first film. Sounds interesting. No start date has been announced but it shouldn't be too far away.

I’ll admit it: when I saw The Strangers back in 2008, it creeped me out. A lot. The atmosphere was just so tense and the story was so plausible (two people being stalked by a trio of killers in the middle of nowhere) that even the movie’s shortcomings couldn’t overshadow the experience for me. Considering that it was actually somewhat of a success, and the fact that most horror movies get them whether they warrant it or not, I’m surprised it’s taken around three years to get a sequel off the ground. But now it looks like it’s a go.

Relativity Media is finally moving forward on its long-delayed sequel to Bryan Bertino's low-budget horror hit "The Strangers" reports Bloody Disgusting.
Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler starred in the original home invasion hit about a young couple terrorized by three masked assailants who break into the remote summer home in which they are staying and cut off all means of escape.
Shot for just $9 million, the film hit several release delays before finally scoring a theatrical release in May 2008 where it went on to gross $82 million worldwide.
In the sequel, the three mysterious figures stalk a family of four that is forced to live in an abandoned trailer after being evicted from their home due to the bad economy.

Looks like Relativity Media is finally gearing up for The Strangers: Part 2, according to Bloody-Disgusting.
Laurent Briet is replacing Bryan Bertino as director with filming to begin in April, although no casting as been announced. Briet has been known for being a VFX artist as seen in The Ring.
The possible plot follows the three mysterious figures (Man in the Mask, Pin-Up Girl, and Dollface) as they now stalk a family of four that is forced to live in an abandoned trailer after being evicted from their home. IMDb has Liv Tyler rumored to reprise her role as Kristen McKay, but we all know how unreliable IMDb can be. Also, we don’t know if it’ll be theatrical or Dtv.
More as it comes.

Our own anonymous sources who have kept us in the loop on the project's development, as well as Bloody-Disgusting 's people, tell us 2011 may be the year The Strangers: Part 2 gets rolling. Laurent Briet is directing from a script by Bertino. You can read more about the story in this previous write-up . Essentially, the terror that unfolds this time takes place in a seemingly deserted trailer park. Have you ever seen the creepy man pictured above in a dream? Or have you heard the story about a psychiatrist who found that several of his patients all reported seeing the same man in their dreams? Believe it or not, this story was part of a viral hoax that was orchestrated by Italian sociologist Andrea Natella a couple of years ago. He set up a fake website at ThisMan.org [1] purporting to be in search of the mysterious man's identity. The hoax worked so well that many people still believe it is real and some do, in fact, claim to have seen the man in their dreams. Now Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures will be turning This Man into a horror thriller to be directed by Bryan Bertino (The Strangers). The story will revolve around a protagonist who essentially discovers that he actually is This Man, when he...

A topic we discussed just a few days ago has made the headlines today. The low budget flick "The Strangers" gets a sequel and is set to begin shooting this fall.
The original, starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, was shot for $9 million and eventually made $80 million worldwide; hence, the inevitable sequel.
Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the first film, will not helm the sequel. He did write the script for it though, and the plot is being kept under wraps right now.
I think Bertino did a great job in setting up the mood and atmosphere of the original film, so why was he not invited to direct the sequel?
The producers instead, hired French director Laurent Briet, a commercial and music video director who also helped shape "The Ring's" visual effects.

"Sorry, I gave at the office."
The Strangers: Part 2 will begin production in September with rumors brewing that the sequel to the 2008 horror flick, The Strangers, is believed to take place in a trailer park.
Replacing the lone bright spot of the film, director Bryan Bertino, is French music video director Laurent Briet. Though written by Bertino and who will likely be influential during production, The Strangers 2 works to duplicate the surprising success of the original.
The Strangers starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple stuck in a house in the woods while masked psychopaths try to ruthlessly kill them. The film was budgeted at $9 million and made an impressive $54 million domestically during a highly competitive 2008 summer.
I wasn’t a fan of the movie yet Bertino’s direction of the film gave something to look forward to. Too bad he’s missing from the director’s chair this time around.

Honestly, I gotta say this bit of news came a lot later than expected. ‘The Strangers’ came out May of 2008, it cost $9 million, and it made $52 million in domestic. ‘The Strangers 2′ should have been fast-tracked with Rogue Pictures throwing all kinds of cash in Bryan Bertino’s direction to get the writer/director back on board.
Instead, the news comes out today, nearly 14 months later, that ‘The Strangers 2′ is set to begin shooting this coming Fall. What’s more, it doesn’t appear Bertino will be returning. Instead, French director Laurent Briet will be filling the director’s chair. This will be his first feature film, as he has previously worked on music videos and special effect for ‘The Ring.’
Bertino will be returning as screenwriter for the sequel. Rumors are that Liv Tyler will be returning to reprise her role from the first film, but nothing has been confirmed.

Variety announced a pair of horror franchise sequels prepping for production starting off with word a sequel to last year's The Strangers will begin shooting next fall for Universal's genre arm Rogue Pictures. The original, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, was a breakout hit centering on a couple whose remote getaway becomes a place of terror when masked strangers invade. Bertino came back to write The Strangers 2, but French helmer Laurent Briet will direct. Briet's career includes music videos and some work on the visual effects for The Ring 2. There is no word on a storyline, but the end of the original film had the invaders heading off in their fan saying something to the effect of "It'll be easier next time." The film ended up grossing $80 million worldwide on a $9 million budget. The biggest question at the end was whether or not Liv Tyler's character survived.

Variety is reporting this morning that a sequel has been confirmed for last years sleeper hit The Strangers, making them more "The don't really know them that well, but we did meet them once's." Laurent Briet is set to direct, making it his feature film debut, having done music videos and visual effects on The Ring. It had a lot of scares, so if he can visually effect them he can probably direct them. Original director Bryan Bertino is still scripting, but has elected not to direct, presumably being tied down with work on his next horror Alone. Shooting will begin in the fall and we as yet have no casting news, so whether it will include Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman is up in the air. Presumably the only necessary ingredients are the scary masked people, but who knows. You can probably tell that I haven't seen The Strangers, mostly...

Part of a mini-trend for home invasion movies, with films like Funny Games and Them, The Strangers scared the wiggins out of anyone who ever answered a ring on the doorbell late at night. It also made $80million on a $9million budget, so it should come as no surprise to learn that Strangers 2 is on its way.The film film, written and directed by Bryan Bertino, saw Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman terrorised by masked visitors to their house. This new film's plot is still under wraps, but we're betting that it also involves masks and uninvited guests.Bertino also wrote this sequel, but this time directorial duties will be handed over to French commercials and music video director Laurent Briet, who's no stranger to horror after contributing visual effects to The Ring. Whether that means that this second film will have a more supernatural bent remains to be seen,...

I guess the ending to The Strangers was both open-ended enough and curious enough to make a sequel a pretty good use of resources. I thought it was an especially tense affair, particularly when the Merle Haggard record was playing. Audience responded last summer, and talk of a second movie soon followed.
Rama's Screen relates a story in the trades that Laurent Briet has been brought in to direct part two. He's fairly new to all this, though he does have music video experience. There are examples of successes and failures on both sides of that transition, and David Fincher is probably the gold standard; remember when he was nominated for Best Director three times in the same year (Janie's Got a Gun, End of the Innocence, and Vogue)?...

According to Bloody-Disgusting, "The Strangers" helmer Bryan Bertino will not return to direct the sequel. He instead could be replaced by French director Laurent Briet, who is currently in final negotiations with Rogue Pictures. Briet's resume is quite limited, having previously only worked on the visual effects for "The Ring" and directed a short film called "Little Minx Exquisite Corpse: Role a Dope." The sequel, which is written by Bertino, is said to take place in a trailer park and is a high priority for Rogue. Released in 2008, the original "The Strangers" was a surprise hit, earning over $80 million in worldwide ticket sales on a $9 million budget. Click here to read our "The Strangers" review.

Me? I dug The Strangers. It lost some steam during the second and third acts, but overall it totally did its thing. So much so that sequel talk is a hot subject right now, and there's one director out there who's a front-runner for the gig.
Our brothers in harm at Bloody Disgusting got the exclusive word today that French director Laurent Briet is in final talks to take the director's chair for Rogue Pictures' The Strangers 2
If Briet (who worked on the visual effects for The Ring) becomes official, he will be working from a script penned by creator Bryan Bertino. Early word reports that the setting of the film will be a trailer park (Christ, don't give Rob Zombie any ideas please).
Stay tuned for more.

We got the exclusive heads up this afternoon that French director Laurent Briet is in final talks to get behind the camera for Rogue Pictures' The Strangers 2, which was penned by creator Bryan Bertino. Briet worked on the visual effects for The Ring and made a short film by the name of Little Minx Exquisite Corpse: Rope a Dope. Word has it that the sequel will take place in a trailer park. We'll hit you guys back when we have official confirmation that the dotted line has been signed. Hold. The first film was a terrifying suspense thriller about a couple (Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman) in a remote suburban house who are targeted by three dangerous masked strangers. The resulting clashes force the couple to go well beyond what they thought themselves capable of in order to survive.
