- He earned his Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, and Doctoral Degrees in Classicals from the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois where he studied with Carl W. Blegen.
- During World War II, he worked as a Cryptanalyst in helping decipher Japanese messages.
- He taught at University of Texas in Austin, Texas; Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut; and at University of Wisconsin in Madison from 1959 until his retirement in 1988.
- His wife, Marja Dorothy Adams, who he married in 1941 died in 2005. He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Bennett and Kathleen Bennett; sons, Patrick Bennett, John Bennett; and Chris Bennett; a brother Clarence Bennett; and four grandchildren.
