After last year’s iteration saw six projects optioned, Aacta is set to re-team with Monster Pictures to run a horror and genre film development initiative.
2020’s Aacta Pitch: Isolation saw close to 200 submissions, and through a series of development rounds, filmmaking teams were required to demonstrate clear planning around finance, marketing, and audience development. Ultimately, eight projects were selected to compete in a live-streamed pitching final at Aacta ScreenFest.
Writer/director Jordan Watton and producer Julia Corcoran’s Burning won that event, receiving $10,000 and an exclusive distribution deal with Monster Pictures.
However, Monster Pictures director Grant Hardie was so impressed with the concepts that following the 2020 competition, with Chris Brown’s production company Pictures in Paradise, he optioned five of the other first round finalists’ projects. They are now working with the teams to develop their projects and take them to market.

A newlywed couple, a murderous cat, and a neighbouring cockatoo are the main players in a blood-soaked tale being developed by Wa writer-director Aaron McCann.
Written at the peak of the pandemic last year, Jonesy centres on the titular feline’s attempts to telepathically convince his owner to help kill the neighbour’s pet cockatoo. However, a combination of bad planning and ineptitude leads to a grizzly triple homicide and a desperate attempt at a cover-up.
The feature film is currently in the financing stage, with Michael Facey on board as producer and Monster Pictures to handle Australian distribution.
McCann, who recently produced web series Hug the Sun with Johnny Ma and Aunty Donna, said the idea for the horror/comedy came from hearing about the behaviour of some pets during lockdown.

We’ve been huge fans of Aussie comedian Aaron McCann ever since he wrote, directed and starred as one half of Henry & Aaron in a series of hilarious comedy shorts dating back more than a decade. Since then he has co-directed the brilliant mockumentary Top Knot Detective, and now helms a surreal new comedy web series, Hug the Sun, funded by Screen Australia and Screenwest & Lottery West. The brainchild of comedians and stars Xavier Michelides and Ben Russell, Hug the Sun spoofs the beloved religious and educational children’s programming of our youth, while taking a darkly subversive twist into the warm, welcoming arms of pagan idolatry. To quote the press release: “The Children’s TV show ‘Hug the Sun’ ran between 1989-1991....

Among the series of dramatic, to the point of heartbreak, documentaries I have watched recently, the mockumentary that is “Top Knot Detective” is a breath of fresh air, both for its main theme (a fictional 90’s Japanese TV show Ronin Suiri Tentai (Deductive Reasoning Ronin) and its creator, Takashi Takamoto, and its incredible presentation.
“Top Knot Detective” is screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam, that will be on January 24 until February 4.
For starters, let me say that Dominic Pearce and Aaron McCann have created a mockumentary so thorough and filled with information, that even knowing the whole concept is fictional, I still have troubled believing it. Starting with the reaction of the Australian audience to the screening of the film, continuing to the events that led to its creation and the company behind it, to the story of deviser, director, writer, producer and protagonist Takashi Takamoto and the interviews with the other protagonists,...

Just to be up front, I am generally a fan of media based mockumentaries, and Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce's Top Knot Detective is one of the best and funniest examples of the form in a while. The film explores the cult following of the eponymous Japanese samurai TV series from the '70s in the filmmakers native Australia and dives deep into the show's creators, their personal lives, and the cultural force that was Top Knot Detective, a TV program that never existed. The basic premise behind the show within the film mirrors any number of sleazy '70s jidai geki samurai/ronin films and TV shows. A samurai's master meets a violent end and the wronged pupil traverses the countryside looking for revenge and picking up...

It was back in 2015 that we first wrote about the Top Knot Detective. Also known by the more literal title of Deductive Reasoning Ronin, Top Knot Detective was a cult Japanese television series explored in a documentary TV series by Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce on Australian television. Or was it? This ‘documentary’ unravels the tale of how ‘Ronin Suiri Tantai’ made it to Australian screens back in the late 90’s, retitled as Top Knot Detective, and what really happened behind the scenes of this outrageous show. The original Japanese series was legendary in its home country as being a cultural train-wreck, led by its insane writer/director/star, Takashi Takamoto. The rivalry between Takashi and costar, Haruto Koike, is just the tip of this conspiratorial...

One of the features from this list, titled "Perished," is here. Fans of zombie horror and film are invited to take a look at all of the films on Dilouie's list, which is linked below. "Perished" is an award winning film. Also, this title has seen several film festivals. And, the film involves a survivor of a zombie apocalypse. Though, survivor is a term used loosely. Film fans can watch as one man faces starvation and isolation, while looking to escape a zombified city. Viewers are encouraged to watch the title, until the end.

Slacking off... we're all guilty of it, especially during our formative high school years. 'Stay in school,' our parents and teachers would always tell us, but I think it's safe to say that most of us were more concerned with hanging out with friends and enjoying our youth than we were burying our heads in books and doing our homework. But there are consequences for playing hookey, and those consequences are sometimes far worse than a slap on the wrist and an after-school trip to detention...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. However, two venues in Telluride, Colorado hope to serve that small group of dedicated art-house horror fans with three days of horror films from around the world at the 3rd annual Telluride Horror Show.
Below is the list of films scheduled to screen at the Telluride Horror Show, which takes place on October 12, 13, and 14, 2012.

Australia’s Revelation Perth International Film Festival will be holding it’s explosive 15th annual edition on July 5-15 with one of it’s most jam-packed lineups yet.
One of the most special events that Revelation will be holding is July 14‘s retrospective of the films of Jeff Keen, the pioneering British underground filmmaker who very sadly just passed away on June 21. Keen’s work has been having a major resurgence lately and Revelation is the latest organization to so boldly feature his breathtaking experimental film work, from classics like 1967′s Marvo Movie to modern films like Artwar (1993) and Joy Thru Film (2000). This is absolutely an event not to be missed.
Another staggering event this year is a very special live presentation of Crispin Hellion Glover‘s notorious underground films What Is It? and It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine. (Click film titles for Bad Lit reviews!) These very...

The first episode of a new web series funded by an Australian TV network and the national screen agency premiered on YouTube yesterday.
Originating from the film trailer competition Movie Extra Webfest, Event Zero is produced by the creative team behind 2011 horror film The Tunnel.
Movie Extra Webfest, an initiative of Movie Network Channels, now in its second year, has also seen Screen Australia put $50,000 behind the project, doubling the production budget to $100,000.
Producer Enzo Tedeschi said: “For an Australian web-series, the $100,000 was a fair whack of cash.”
Despite the investment Tedeschi said that web-series as a platform isn’t far off from being recognised as a competitive screen platform to film and TV: “I don’t know if web-series are being treated seriously just yet but there is something happening around the industry with well-timed, well-placed series, like the Bondi Hipsters, which actually they already proved with Beached Az.

I've just watched this three times in quick succession and you should too: it's a digital short created by Australian comedy duo Henry Inglis & Aaron McCann to advertise the Central Institute of Technology, a real West Australian tech college that runs film courses. They've done their job with the short going viral. The creator of Community Dan Harmon helped it along via Twitter -- after walking in on his team of writers watching it. And it's no wonder, the short mixes the horrific and the funny in that perfect mix we're used to seeing in Nash Edgerton's shorts work. Turns out the guys have more stuff to back this up, with McCann's short film Perished selected for SXSW this year. Watch the digital short below. Then watch it again. ...

An ad for a Perth tertiary institute featuring graduates of the college has gone viral over the weekend.
Written, directed and starring comedy duo and graduates of Central Institute of Technology, Henry Inglis and Aaron McCann, the horror-themed skit-style commercial titled It’s a Snap about ‘learning in the city’ was featured on The Huffington Post, Vancouver Sun and Gizmodo and has now clocked up nearly one and a quarter million views.
Kenley Gordon, head of marketing at Cit gave Inglis and McCann creative license to do whatever they felt would reach 16 and 17 year olds.
Inglis and McCann’s producer Lauren Elliott said she woke on Saturday morning to emails from producers and agents in La and Canada wanting to work with the duo.
The Duo, who perform as Henry and Aaron, previously won Movie Extra’s 2010 web series competition Webfest as voted on by Facebook users from a 60 second trailer.

Australian filmmakers Henry Inglis and Aaron McCann have been quietly making a name for themselves over the last few years with various online series and short films. Now they've totally gone commercial, though, and it. is. brilliant. This isn't another lame ad for a local technical college or an online university featuring a bunch of single parents impossibly happy to be going back to school. No, this shows what real college life is like, and it's so good it'll make you want to build a machine that can punch the space-time continuum in the face and go back in time so you can enroll in the Central Institute of Technology instead of whatever lame college you actually went to. And yes, it's a real college and this is a real commercial for it (they're Henry...

Robert G. Putka‘s Mouthful and Jared Varava‘s Tumbleweed! are two short films that have been selected to screen at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival, which will run in Austin, TX on March 9-17.
Mouthful is Putka’s second short film, a verbally raunchy comedy starring Eilis Cahill and Conor Casey as a young couple whose relationship becomes strained thanks to an overly frank discussion about their sexual histories. The film was recently reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film saying “one shouldn’t assume too much how the premise of a young man and woman discussing [male] anatomy will play out.”
Putka has also mounted an IndieGoGo campaign to help fund his filmmaking team’s trip to SXSW and for marketing material, such as posters, T-shirts, press kits and such. If you want to help out, please visit the Mouthful IndieGoGo page.

The Movie Extra Webfest winning webseries Henry & Aaron’s 7 Steps to Superstardom premiered its first episode on YouTube yesterday.
Bearing a slight resemblance to the Flight of the Conchords format, the quirky web show follows two clueless best friends Henry and Aaron as they (guided by their insane producer) strive to become famous. The first installment sees the duo try and emulate such celebrities as Madonna and Angelina Jolie by adopting a foreign orphan – or three.
The inaugural Webfest is an annual initiative by the Movie Network Channels to drive the production of online content as well as the use of social media. Aspiring filmmakers were required to pitch their idea for a webseries in a 60 second trailer. Hosted entirely on Facebook, the competition attracted over 13,000 fans. The trailer with the most “likes” won.
